Afternoon Grin well after a ridiculously early start on a Sunday morning, I completed my first ever 10k race down the seafront at Blackpool. I ran with 3 other people and one was an experienced runner who paced us at 8 minutes per kilometre so we finished in exactly 1 hour 20 minutes Smile

I actually really really enjoyed it and didn't struggle with my breath once
which is a miracle for me Shock

Hope you all have good runs Smile

Dotty just looked at the results online and the winner did it in 35 minutes Shock Shock how is that even possible???

spooky that's fantastic - congratulations!! Grin. Running at that pace for that length of time is brilliant - when's the next run then?! Grin

Kasterborous · 20/07/2014 16:33

Wow spooky 10K is fantastic and what a good time too. Especially when it's this warm. This time next year you'll be doing a marathon Smile

Dotty I hope you feel better soon. I wouldn't worry about not being able to run for a week. Your fitness and what you have done so far won't be affected. I had to have a week off once and I was fine.

chameleon sorry to hear you are unwell. It just shows how addictive running becomes once you start it, I once went when I had a temperature of 39 degrees C. (I hadn't realised when I went out), no wonder I felt wobbly! Hope you feel better soon.

DottyDot · 20/07/2014 16:40

I don't know how you lot are running outside in this heat! The gym is air conditioned but I'm still hot and sweating after about 2 minutes of running...

Looking forward to giving it a go tomorrow - definitely starting to feel better now - just want the snot and cough to give it up now... Grin

Kasterborous · 20/07/2014 16:51

I think I might have to join the gym. Running in this heat is really hard. I had to give up after only running for a mile last night. It was really muggy as well as hot. I nearly passed out and was nearly sick. If I hadn't stopped I think I would have done. I didn't realise I could sweat so much! I went again this morning and managed 3 miles of running but it was still hard.

Glad you are feeling better Dotty your run tomorrow will help clear all that snot out Grin

Inkspellme · 20/07/2014 17:05

hi all. I've been gone for a bit but have kept plodding on. just done my first 20 min run. slowly but I did it. the heat makes it harder and my dd and I are trying to make progress together. I'm actually looking forward to no more walking breaks!

WastingMyYoungYears · 20/07/2014 17:24

I joined a gym today, and it's all this thread's fault ShockGrin.

What have I done?

DottyDot · 20/07/2014 17:33

inkspell! Hurrah - glad you're still there and still going Grin.

wasting hello! You won't regret it, honest... Hmm Grin

I'm off tomorrow - going to ds2's sports day in the morning, then straight to the gym - get it over with and I can recover at home watching the cricket!

lynnoggs · 20/07/2014 18:17

Hey, I am gonna start c25k tomo... and am so scared! I am overweight and trying to lose weight... at least 6 stone! I am also 13 weeks post natal. have been doing kettlercise for the last 5 weeks and have enjoyed that but I really want to be able to run... I have a romanticised idea of running for hours clearing my mind.... atm i can run like 30 sec and my mind is only thinking about not dying! anyway decided to write here so I won't just give up... fingers crossed it works Smile

ForTheBants · 20/07/2014 18:50

Ds and I are doing wk4 which, considering we're in Florida and it's boiling , we are finding pretty easy.

CruCru · 20/07/2014 19:41

Hey lynnogs - nice to meet you!

lynnoggs · 20/07/2014 19:54

Hi @CruCru nice to meet you too... Smile

CruCru · 20/07/2014 20:35

I would say I have at least four stone to lose. Since the kids (DS is nearly 3 and DD is 9 months), I have this ghastly saggy stomach - the rest of me doesn't look too bad but the stomach is something I have to lose.

lynnoggs · 20/07/2014 20:51

Mine are 12, 11 and 13 weeks... I should of put more effort into losing weight after my dd and ds but didn't! Booo! going to uni in sept so really wanting to lose for that... doing mental health nursing.
have you tried kettlercise? it is fantastic... hurts like hell but works.

spookyskeleton · 20/07/2014 20:54

lynnoggs welcome and good luck starting...the first step is the hardest Smile

I have 3 stone to lose and I don't think it is ever going to happen! My legs and top half are ok but my stomach is just too big Sad I was determined to be a size 12 for my holidays but we go in 5 weeks and I am still a size 16!

lynnoggs · 20/07/2014 21:07

Hey spooky... thank you and I do hope I will be able to do it... are you following a weightloss plan? are u doing the c25k?

Kasterborous · 20/07/2014 21:09

Hi lynnoggs welcome, and nice to meet you Smile it took me until DD was two years old to do anything about my fitness and weight. I started the c25k in February and haven't looked back.

I didn't lose any weight just doing the c25k at all. I decided I wanted to do something about my weight and joined slimming world on 16th May. To date I've lost 13lb and it has worked. I find running a bit easier since I lost weight. Still look like a red sweaty lobster though!

spookyskeleton · 20/07/2014 21:28

lynnoggs I am doing the 5:2 diet but eat too much on my non-fasting days so I am maintaining rather than losing Blush

I am not doing C25K anymore. I started it at the beginning of April and completed it in June. Today, I did my first 10k race and ran for 80 minutes without stopping Smile don't ever doubt it will work as I am proof that it does.

Back from holiday and trying to keep motivated. I managed four runs while I was away but each was less than 5k. It was so hot I could only run early in the morning and my route was uphill out and downhill back. The longest distance I managed was 4.5k but it was slow. I had to run/walk out most of the way (steep hill) but had a fast run back.

Since being back home I have tried to do 5k twice but I keep having to stop and walk. First I was reasonably fast overall (36mins) but I would rather a slower steadier pace with no stopping. This morning's run was rubbish. 40mins. Lots of walking and everything aches. My period started this morning so perhaps that has affected me? I feel really dispirited and like the pre-holiday running mojo has left me. My immediate goal is 5k non-stop and under 33mins (ideally 30 or less).Sad

lynnoggs · 20/07/2014 21:41

Oh wow!! that is amazing... running for 80 mins seems sooo far in the distance but im determined to do it!

I got a healthy eating plan from my kettlercise instructor. so far I have lost 10lb and 15 inches. but I still have lots to go. I looked at 5:2 and keep thinking about it but just not sure if I could do the fasting.

lynnoggs · 20/07/2014 21:45

@kasterborous well done on ur weightloss. its best to lose steady. did u measure urself? my kettlercise instructor only goes on inch loss she says that's the best way to tell if u are losing.

Kasterborous · 20/07/2014 21:46

Kitey I finished the c25k in May and have realised there is no-way I can run 5k in 30 mins. I now go at a steadier pace and run further. I can do 6.5K in 50 mins. I would rather do that than try and do the 5k in 30 mins and risk injuring myself.

I always find it harder when I'm on my period. Please don't be disheartened. I found setting myself a distance goal rather than speed is much more manageable.

Running outside in this heat and humidity really saps all the energy and strength out of you too.

Kasterborous · 20/07/2014 21:49

lynnoggs yes I've lost it slowly and steadily. I lose between 1-2lb a week as a rule. I get weighed at the slimming world group every week. I didn't do my measurements but my clothes fit me so much better now I can tell I've lost it. My legs seem to be toning up a bit too.

spookyskeleton · 20/07/2014 21:50

kitey well done on running whilst on holiday.. property dedication. As kaster says, very few people run 5k in 30 minutes so just slow down and you will do it. If it is a struggle, pick up the programme at week 6.

Fasting is OK once you get used to it, I wouldn't say I enjoy it but I can do it. just need to stop eating so much the rest of the time!!
