Running or shred?

Good BMI but not exercised for 2 years. I don't need to lose weight but need to tone as flabby / lack definition, and to up fitness.

Need something I can fit into 10 hour working days and likely to stick too. Starting today but can't decide.

Couch to 5k. Do it in your lunch hour. To start with it's mainly walking. Running gets addictive once you get into it.

CMOTDibbler · 10/06/2014 13:37

running - you get out in the open which is good for your head, and you can enter events to keep the motivation going

KatoPotato · 10/06/2014 13:39

Do both! The Shred is a fantastic all over body conditioner which will help tone up immensely!

Running has it's own benefits (and risks) but I am not a runner and hate, hate hate it! But if you are keen, why not do both? you need rest days on the Shred and a run could be ideal.

ditavonteesed · 10/06/2014 13:40

shred if it is for toning, I am a fatty but quite a toned fatty thanks to jillian.

pootlebug · 10/06/2014 13:40

Both, if you can't decide. Couch 2 5k 3 days per week, Shred 3 days per week, one day off. Shred better for all around toning (though running is pretty good for toning quite a lot of you too) and running better for fitness levels and much more fun to get outside than exercise in your living room.

I have time now but keep thinking about a lay down because I am tired! Need to make myself.

I did Level 2 Shred last night, god it was a killer. Even my fingers were sweaty. But it doesn't take up much time to fit in. I'm really going to try and stick to it and do it 3/4 times a week instead of doing it for a few days and giving up. Like you I'm not overweight but just really need to tone up all over.

I am doing both - running 3-4 times per week, Shred 1-2 times per week, with no more than 5 days exercise in total. C25K was great for kick starting my cardio fitness, and now I can actually survive Shred and get some of the toning benefits.

I'm doing both. Running has shifted the weight and shred has got rid of my tummy and toned my bum. It really works!

lazypepper · 10/06/2014 17:05

Both. Seems a popular option on this thread Grin

Am a bit out of practice right now, but I try to run at least 3 times per week - and do a dvd 3 times too. Shred i like, Ripped in 30 I like more. This morning i did No More Trouble Zones- but it was on for almost an hour - I was fed up after 30 minutes.

The strength work really does help the running. Stronger thighs and glutes help your stride. It also stops me getting a bad back. Running alone did cause me lower back pain, but building in some core work prevents it.

SureFootedWhispher · 10/06/2014 18:10

Downloaded c25k and put start date tomorrow. Working from home so no excuse. Will do this until I feel boredom then mix it up with shred / killer buns.

Use to run and kickbox but now am a spongey mess! Am hoping I will regain some energy.
