Exercise vs libido

Not mine - my DH.

About 6 years ago, he started cycling to work. We had done a few easy bike rides together in the summer, so this was not completely out of the blue. He wanted to get fit and save a few quid on the travelling expenses.

He's 49 and quite fit. We've always been fairly active - long walks, a little swimming, that sort of thing.

In the last years DH has become increasingly into the cycling, encouraged by a similar group at work. The problem is that the more he does, the less he's interested in sex. We've discussed it and he says he just doesn't think about sex when he's doing lots of cycling. It's not a huge problem for me, as I have a fairly low sex drive, but I'm curious to know if this is a common side effect of lots of exercise?

As a guide, in the summer, he's riding 200+ miles a week, mostly too and from work, some at lunchtimes, too.

My understanding is that there is clear evidence that cycling specifically impacts (literally) on men's sex drive. Lowers sperm count and deadens sensation because of pressure if seat. Other exercise - no impact in general I think.

I've heard that doing quite a lot of endurance exercise can lower testosterone levels and/or libido in men.

I'm not sure how much is needed to have this effect, I suppose it might vary from person to person.

I have found similar, if I get very heavily into exercise I'm not so bothered about sex, or anything else for that matter

Thanks for the replies, ladies! I don't think it's a physical problem - when i initiate he responds well enough, and seems to be ... errrr, fully operational. He says he just doesn't think about sex nearly as much/at all when he's done a load of exercise. I think it might well be a testosterone thing.

At least I get a quiet life in the summertime, ha-ha!
