Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

Good luck to all doing HMs today!

EauRouge · 02/03/2014 13:14

Am I the first one home? Holy fuck it's windy today. And the race was a little more multi-terrain than I was led to believe (particularly enjoyed the 'flood debris' section). Not sure on my exact time because I forgot to turn my Garmin off, but it was 2:29:something. Just squeaked in! Pretty pleased with that time in those conditions. The last mile into a headwind was hellish.

Sirzy · 02/03/2014 13:19

Sounds like a tough race Eau, glad you got it done in a time you were pleased with!

Hope you have your feet up now!

DH is stuffing me full of carbs because I'm freezing. Then I'm going to have a shower and go to the pub! Long soak in the bath later when the DDs are asleep.

I feel a bit bad, DH and the DDs met me just before the finish line. DD1 wanted to run over the line with me but I left her behind because I wanted to get under 2:30 Blush Someone gave her a spare medal though so she was happy. I was hearing 'wait for me, mummy!' as I struggled over the finish line Grin I feel like a bit of a bastard.

Sirzy · 02/03/2014 14:06

Bless her, I would have done the same though! The rest of your day sounds like bliss!

I'm feeling very disappointed :( did first 11.5 miles in 9-9.30min miling but the water at the last station hit my stomach and I felt rubbish. Walked at 11.5 and actually rang dh to come and get me! Felt a but better so ran again but I ran walked all of the rest, I think I finished in 2hrs 7. Dh has done his usual of not actually getting a picture which has made me more fed up! He hasn't actually got a photo of any races I've done, this one he said the camera was flashing red but he didn't even try and I took 15 photos when home with no battery problems at all :( I sound like a right misery sorry!

cinnamongreyhound · 02/03/2014 15:22

But it was lovely to meet OhoneohTwoOhThree Grin

Sirzy · 02/03/2014 15:57

Sorry it didn't go as you planned Cinnamon :(

EauRouge · 02/03/2014 16:00

That's too bad, cinnamon. Great pace for the first bit though! I would still be really pleased with 2:07, especially in this weather. Was it really bad for you? There were lots of exposed fen roads on our route, I think I was going backwards for some of it.

cinnamongreyhound · 02/03/2014 16:04

It was very windy, one part was running uphill on horrible clayey mud with the wind in my face! Feeling a bit more positive after a shower, still a bit nauseous though. I'm doing another in may with my littlest doggy and friend and her doggy so it hasn't put me off! Think perhaps I need to train to 15 miles to help my brain.

EauRouge · 02/03/2014 16:07

Yes, the last couple of miles seemed to really drag for me. I was so bloody perky at 10 miles and then by the time I got to 11 I was really struggling. I hate running uphill into a headwind and I hate clay soil!

Sirzy · 02/03/2014 16:14

Thats interesting you said about training to 15 miles,I was thinking I needed to be able to do 12k before this 10k in May just so I know I can go further

OP posts:
cinnamongreyhound · 02/03/2014 16:45

Everyone says you only need to train to 10 but I always do 12-13 but actual racing I tend to go faster so think I need to get used to going further so a bit quicker wouldn't be a problem.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 02/03/2014 17:08

Cinnamon was a ROCK STAR! This was my 7th HM (not counting all the 13.1+ training runs I did for my full marathon and was by far the hardest course (even the New York half last year, with a wind chill of minus 70 zillion - at least that was flat and on roads).

I ran to 10 miles, stopped for a gel and some water and never really got my rhythm back. That last mile, through a muddy field and up and down over a bridge over the M11 was the work of the devil. And the wind. Horrible.

Having said all that I REALLY enjoyed it, and suspect I have rediscovered my running mojo Grin.

And my time was 2:20 something - I didn't start my garmin right at the start, and forgot to turn it off at the end.

Well done Eau. Hope you have warmed up Smile

Where are MerryBuddha and sarahandduck?

Sirzy · 02/03/2014 17:11

Well done everyone, brilliant in the conditions. Mademe quite nervous about my HM and it is not until October.

Sirzy · 02/03/2014 18:11

Which HM are you doing thefemalejoshlyman?

OP posts:
MerryBuddha · 02/03/2014 18:13

Well Done Eau (I would of left the kid behind too Blush, OhOne and Cinnamon (I would definately kick hubby in the back tonight in bed, to feel some karma).

Well, what a cold and windy run, in some places the wind speed was up to 35mph!! which wasn't fun when running into it!

Had to stand around for 2 hrs before the start which wasn't fun either!!!

Hit the wall at 10 miles, and thought about walking at 12 but some kind lady, tapped me on the back and said "it's only a mile" which was enough to keep me going!!

2.04, my first HM so very happy with that Grin.

It was great to meet Sarahandduck, we ran the first 9 miles together, which was brilliant!!

Sirzy · 02/03/2014 18:14
