Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

Cinnamon, I don't think I agree. I can understand why you wouldn't find it challenging and would want to move on, but if you want to run shorter distances, or raise money for something the joy of those races is that they're pressure free Grin I hope that makes sense!

I just got back from my first ever parkrun Grin
Total success! I completed it in 30 minutes, the weather was glorious, the uphill bits were hard but didn't last fooooreeeveeeer, everyone was friendly. I loved it!
Coco, how did you get on?

How are all out HM runners feeling today?

EauRouge · 01/03/2014 10:49

Well done on the parkrun! Will you be going back next week to try and beat your time?

Cinnamon- we're doing the sport relief mile with the DDs. I don't think I would have done the 10k if it was just me, but only because there are so many others to choose from.

As for how I'm feeling today; sick, mostly. But I think that's nerves rather than illness/food poisoning. Just about to head out for a quick shake down to stretch my legs and remind myself that I can actually run.

ThursdayLast · 01/03/2014 10:59

I will def be going back, but I'm so boggled by my time I can't imagine ever beating it!

You'll be all good Eau, I hope you've got your pasta at the ready?!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/03/2014 11:43

I did a slow parkrun today - first run all week, though I did have a long walk (4.5 miles or so) on Weds with a friend and her dog. Looking forward to tomorrow - from reading previous reviews and last years results I will be firmly at the back of the pack but that's fine Grin - no pressure.

I too am really enjoying Running like a Girl, though it keeps making me cry on the train Smile.

EauRouge · 01/03/2014 12:29

Oh god, that short run was bloody dreadful. At one point I had 3 kites and 3 buzzards circling overhead, no doubt waiting for me to keel over so they could eat my eyeballs.

I am nervous about being nervous, FFS.

I will be fine. And then afterwards I will go to the pub and get royally pissed.

Good luck for tomorrow, OhOne, Cinnamon and MerryBuddha. Thanks

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/03/2014 12:54

You WILL be fine Eau - good luck to you too!

AmberNectarine · 01/03/2014 13:12

A lovely 4 miles in the sunshine this morning. Pace not incredible - came in just over 44m, but it felt quite easy which was great.

AmberNectarine · 01/03/2014 13:12

Good luck to all the HMers!!

Sirzy · 01/03/2014 13:24

I am very jealous of all those doing Half Marathons tomorrow even though I would never manage to finish one at the moment! Good luck to all - enjoy yourselves!

Well done on your first parkrun Thursday! Nice time too. I volunteered at ours today rather than running - the chap who came in third (time of 21 minutes or so) was running with a baby in a buggy. It was so muddy that the baby had little goggles on and was peering at the world through a mask of splatters Grin

Have just got in from a pleasant 5k in the sun. Didn't feel like hard work either, which was pleasing.

Good luck to all HMers tomorrow. Eau, you'll be fine (though I did hoot at your kite/buzzard comment)!

sarahandduck · 01/03/2014 15:21

AmberNectarine - I also entered the ballot for the Royal Parks Half. Really hoping I (and you!) get a place. Wish us luck for Silverstone tomorrow....looking forward to meeting MerryBuddha and completing our first HM together. Nervous - yes, excited - hell, yeah. I just keep thinking this time tomorrow, it will all be over!!

Sirzy · 01/03/2014 15:28

5k in 21 mins? wow! Even more impressive pushing a buggy!

at mental picture of baby in mud-spattered goggles. My DS's would have loved that when they were small Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 01/03/2014 16:07

I do run shorter distances ThursdayLast, I do parkrun most weeks and have entered 2 10ks in the next couple of months. I appreciate your input :)

I had to laugh at your eyeball comment EauRouge! You've done the training you'll be fine, others carry you along too.

Thanks everyone for well wishes and good luck to everyone else racing tomorrow. I always feel sick from when I get up until the start and can barely eat breakfast but I know I have to. This is only my fourth race, 2x 10k and another half and it's supposed to be a tough one so I've been told not to expect my pb. I started my last one at 9min miling and did first 10k in 54 mins then died around 9 miles and was down to 11 min miling at one point :(. This time I'm aiming for 9m 30 miles and sustain it and hopefully speed up a bit towards the end but we will see!

cinnamongreyhound · 01/03/2014 16:09

Well done ThursdayLast, great time! I took ds1 today for his second ever parkrun and he knocked 4 mins off his pb. Was a slow one for me at 45m35 but lovely to do it with him.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/03/2014 20:14

So what are we having for our dinner/breakfast of champions?

I'm making lasagne for tonight, so I have something to eat when I get home tomorrow as well (DH is in forrin parts for the next week), and have bought bagels for breakfast.

ThursdayLast · 01/03/2014 20:16

OhOne, that's the kind of thing i eat anyway! Yum yum yum Grin
Thank you all, turns out my official time was 29.30 I'm so happy

EauRouge · 01/03/2014 20:17

I had pasta for dinner and I'll have porridge for breakfast.

My children will not sleep. Is it OK to drug them? It is the night before a race.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/03/2014 20:35

It would be illegal not to Eau Grin (lighthearted Wink)

ThursdayLast · 01/03/2014 20:42

Yes Eau!

cinnamongreyhound · 01/03/2014 20:58

We had sausage, egg, chips and peas followed by doughnuts! I will have my usual granola and yoghurt for brekkie plus an extra slice of toast with peanut butter as it's quite a late start!

MerryBuddha · 01/03/2014 22:21

Had toast for breakfast, large pasta dish for lunch, vegatable curry, rice, naan for dinner. Tomorrow planning to have porridge for breakfast and a peanut butter whole meal sandwich with banana mid morning!!! Also been drinking water all day!!!

I am nervous, excited. Legs are aching with the lack of use this week!!

Good luck to all doing their HM tomorrow. I have already sign up for 2 colour runs today, and if tomorrow goes well, I can see me signing up for any and everything!!!

See you in the morning Sarahandduck.

EATmum · 01/03/2014 23:48

Wow good luck everyone racing tomorrow. I'll think of you when I'm out on my long run. I can't decide whether in jealous that yours will be over this time tomorrow or relieved that I still have three weeks before my personal panic. I think the former actually! Just want to get it done - but as I'm in the follow up phase I look forward to your tips and guidance when you're out on The Other Side! Good luck.

ThursdayLast · 02/03/2014 08:14

Good Luck!!

Snowdown · 02/03/2014 08:29

Good luck to all out HM runners today, can't wait to hear how you get on. Try to enjoy it!
