Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

You're all doing really well. I'm a bit nervous of pushing my mileage up as as soon as I started trying to do 4-5 miles at a time I suffered really bad shin pain. Need to though, want to get up to 10k by spring.

Snowdown · 31/01/2014 14:37

Bootcamp this morning, lots of intervals and lots of squats, running with arms in the air - how hard is that!...I'm doing a boxing class tomorrow - long run hopefully on Sunday.

Sirzy · 31/01/2014 16:23

My problem is I push myself too much in the first 1-2km meaning from there on I am knackered so by 4 I am ready to stop. I really need to lern how to pace myself

Have you got a Garmin or an app where you can set a pace alarm?

Snowdown · 31/01/2014 18:20

I do the opposite Sirzy, I start off slow and by 3km, I can glide into a fast run, I always leave more in the tank because I like to finish with a sprint but I go running with other friends who belt along from the start and I find it hard to run with them.

cinnamongreyhound · 31/01/2014 18:45

What a tough mudder?

I tend to be pretty evenly paced but I know I can run faster as I do with others, I just like to be comfortable! Maybe start and then deliberately slow a bit within the first min or two Sirzy?

ElvisJesusAndCocaCola · 31/01/2014 21:19

I'm the same as you, snowdown. I start more slowly, then speed up (only a bit). I often get annoyed with myself as being too slow brings down my average speed :(

10 miles planned for tomorrow.

Snowdown · 31/01/2014 21:52

My legs need to be eased into the run though, they feel all stiff and rickety at the start. And running too fast at the start meant I didn't enjoy the end. I get faster doing intervals and squats but I will never be a truly fast runner, my body just doesn't want to move that fast. I can do a 54min 10k, but I'm not sure I could go any faster without a serious amount of work and that would mean less pleasure, for me there would be no point in that, I'm just not competitive enough. Smile

Sirzy · 31/01/2014 21:58

54 min 10k sounds very impressive to me!

I have a serious case of DOMS setting in after last nights bootcamp so I don't think I will be doing much running this weekend!

I really wanted to run today, had a visit to my parents all lined up to look after DS, but when I got there I had to change my mind...I would have been blown away for sure!
Then I couldn't decide on how to work out this evening, so I gave up and had a bath instead SmileWine

Fishandjam · 01/02/2014 00:01

This is Tough Mudder.

MrsShrek3 · 01/02/2014 00:16

sirzy me too.

Snowdown · 01/02/2014 08:13

I know a group of people that did the tough Mudder last year - it took 4hrs and they had a brilliant day but I think it was one of those things that they only felt the need to do once! The electric shocks were brutal on the larger particpants.
I was proud of my 54mins but I'm surrounded by people who routinely do 45mins...I guess the comparison make me feel less successful.

ThursdayLast · 01/02/2014 11:27

Ok, yesterday's fail has been made up for by a 1hr 6miler on a new route extension, in some hail, with a reluctant dog.
They were NOT kidding today about high winds.

I really liked the look of the tough mudder until I heard about the electric shocks, they do not appeal at all!

Have a great weekend everyone, don't get blown away!

cinnamongreyhound · 01/02/2014 14:24

Tough mudder definitely not for me! We've got the gladi8tor around here but I don't want to be cold or zapped!!!!

Did 10miles this morning in the sunshine, including parkrun, which after 6.5miles I didn't think 27m55 was bad :)

Fishandjam · 01/02/2014 15:23

I'm not even sure about a 10k. Looking at last year's Bonfire Burn results, at my current speed (which I'm not sure I could even maintain over 10k) I would have come in approximately last. (Snowdown, a 54min 10k sounds impressive to me too!) Still, I have until July to register so that's another 6 months to get a bit fitter.

5k this afternoon; just sub-40 mins. Speed undoubtedly not helped by some stonking Fen winds and eating my own bodyweight in Chinese foof last night.

Fishandjam · 01/02/2014 15:25

Foof? Blush I meant food! Epic typing fail... That would have been an entirely different evening Grin

EauRouge · 01/02/2014 15:42

That's not how we celebrated Chinese New Year Grin

You're brave running today, it's so windy. I'm heading out for my long run tomorrow, only 4 weeks until my half marathon now. Starting to get nervous.

Sirzy · 01/02/2014 15:44

I am tempted to sign up for an electric run and/or colour run for something fun too look forward to both are only 5k

Who's heading out this morning? I failed yesterday so heading out today in about an hour when a friend is happy to invite my youngest over for a play. Will need to leave the older two doing homework but they're happy with that. Hoping to do an 11 miler, but not sure if my childcare (or legsSmile) will allow it!

ThursdayLast · 02/02/2014 10:01

The dog and I went out for an interval based run this morn. The baby woke me up early Confused
For those who need pacing, I recommend getting a reluctant staffy! After I've let him do his morning ablutions I have to put him on the lead because he is just soooooooo slooooow.
I think we covered 3.5 miles in 35 mins ish, so I've made room for my pub roast!

Sounds like you've got complicated childcare plans EAT

Snowdown · 02/02/2014 10:34

Just waiting for dh to get back from his run and then I'll head out for maybe a 12km or longer if I can take it. I'm a bit sore after yesterday's boxing class - really worked all the core muscles....think I'll be going back for more....this exercise malarky can make you a little obsessive. Blush

cinnamongreyhound · 02/02/2014 12:38

I kind of wish I was going today as is so lovely but 10miles yesterday was enough and today I'm having a family day. Although at the moment ploughing through ds1's homework bleugh!

EATmum · 02/02/2014 14:46

You said it Thursday. Turned out that middle DD (10) suddenly became anxious about me going out so the compromise was that I just went round the block - 22 sodding times, checking in after every third lap! But I managed my eleven miles suspect I will never walk again. Just eaten two scones split with jam and butter - my reward.
