Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

Great run this morning, I felt strong and fast and the sun shining it was just perfect....I wish every run felt as good!

Well done snowdiwn, I love it when it all comes together.
EAT, your DS sounds sweet, I wonder what he was worried about so much? Are you showing signs of never coming back Wink
I had roast lamb and rice pudding as my reward, I'm so stuffed I've had to lie down to get over it!

Thursday she (DD) is lovely, but gets anxious sometimes. So we try to work around that. Husband working today but the sun was shining, so wanted to get out and run! Plus the half I'm working towards is 7 weeks today not that I'm counting or anything

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 02/02/2014 16:24

I managed a lunchtime run on Thursday and 11 miles today Grin Grin Grin

It was soooooooo good to be out Grin

Sorry, I clearly can't read the difference between S and D! And I didn't mean to be insensitive Thanks
That's v sweet of you and her, was she waving at you when you went past?
I haven't been brave enough to enter any races, so I haven't got the FEAR yet, but I imagine it's pretty motivating, even when you could easily have claimed extenuating circumstances!

And excellent thundering OhOneOhTwo Grin

8 miles done, great weather, yay as it wasn't raining. also learnt don't put on your old trainers (never used for running) when can't locate your running trainers, as now have very sore toes and had to walk the last half home, after removing so mentioned trainers, tried barefoot running for the first time.

Snowdown · 02/02/2014 18:35

Excellent milage merry and ohone and Thursday running while still having a baby - respect! My dcs were 3 before I even considered it - and I have no idea why it took me so long to look after myself too.

EATmum · 02/02/2014 19:26

You're right Thursday - if I didn't have THE FEAR I would definitely have bailed today. So maybe entering a race is a good plan ask me tomorrow when I fall over trying to get out of bed I can already feel my muscles groaning Smile

Sirzy · 02/02/2014 19:34

Having entered a race, and publically told people I am doing it certainly keeps me going. It gives me the motivation to get out and then when I am out I love it anyway.

DS is finally well enough to preschool tomorrow so fingers crossed I will get a long (by my standards) run in

Hello, can I join you? I did post for a while on the "inner chimp" thread but have moved on a bit beyond 5k now.

I have entered for a 6 mile thing in April and have been doing a 10k training plan but actually ran 10.5 km today, which is the furthest i've ever run, so I'm feeling pretty happy. I did 10k once last year, felt really tired and my running went off the boil a bit. But today I felt fine, could definitely have done more, and can't wait to get back out again!

cinnamongreyhound · 02/02/2014 21:28

To be honest I like the challenge of a race until about a week before and on the day I feel really sick but great afterwards! I also worry the pressure of having to run a particular distance to be ready will stop the enjoyment of running and make me not want to but it never does! I'm doing the race that was my first ever last year on 16th march and hoping expecting to beat my time of 1hr1 min as my fastest 10k now is 56mins.

cinnamongreyhound · 02/02/2014 21:32

Hi originalpiratematerial, well done on your 10.5k :)

originalpiratematerial · 02/02/2014 22:33

Thank you!

Can I ask a question? How often are you all running? I've been doing about four runs a week (I do fast walking and/or the gym on the other days). I've been a bit nervous about running more that four days a week in case of injury, but don't know if that's being a bit over-cautious!

Sirzy · 02/02/2014 22:41

I aim to run 3 or 4 times a week. Some weeks I do more others I do less depends what I can fit in!

OP posts:
MerryBuddha · 02/02/2014 22:44

Same here ideally 3 to 4 times per week, but some weeks less due to other commitments.

EATmum · 02/02/2014 22:55

I'd love to get to 3/4 times a week a I manage 2 usually, sometimes 3. Though I do a circuits class one other night. I've heard it's good to mix things up a bit and do some different exercise as well as running. And my friend runs the class and picks me up so I can't skive

Snowdown · 03/02/2014 07:20

I run 3 times a week and then do a bootcamp class twice a week. I deliberately restrict the number of days I run because of injury worries, also the boot camp sessions are useful because we do intervals and work on core muscles - it all helps with running.

Snowdown · 03/02/2014 07:22

Sorry, meant to say the point at which you risk injury is different for everyone....I think I'm extra cautious due to having a few issues in the past.

originalpiratematerial · 03/02/2014 07:28

Thanks all! That's useful.

cinnamongreyhound · 03/02/2014 08:25

I run 3-4 times a week too but don't do any other exercise apart from walking.

ThursdayLast · 03/02/2014 08:34

Morning all, you're all up and about nice and early (DS let me have a lie in today 8am!)

Hello originslpiratematerial! I love that feeling when you hit a target and still fell good after, it's such a real indication of improvement!
I also aim to run 3/4 times a week, but like others it's not always possible what with stupid real life. As I get better, I need longer too, which makes it much more difficult than when I used to get home from work and do a quick 20mins.
I try and cross train too, I do Pilates once a week and try and do a fitness blender work out depending on what I feel needs working on.

Thanks snowdown, for the respect! I run BECAUSE I have a baby now hahaha, it is such good stress relief for me! As soon as I was able to express milk at about 5weeks, I was gone (which was bad because I had a section Shock)!

No running here today, I would be blown away for sure Smile

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 03/02/2014 21:27

I try to get out once during the week, parkrun on Saturday and a long run on Sunday though it's been a couple of months since I was doing that regularly

I was running 5 days a week at the height of marathon training, which was pretty brutal.

I cycle a couple of miles each weekday, just to/from the station.

Fishandjam · 03/02/2014 22:58

Hi originalpirate. I'm a relative newbie to running (and am badly outclassed on this board!) so I'm only running twice a week. Though I do fitness bootcamp 1-2 times a week (2 if work doesn't interfere) and Pilates once a week.

Did 5k tonight in 37 mins, so my time is still creeping down; and more importantly for me, I was able to do 1k at a pace of 6:30 which I have never managed before. Go me! Grin
