Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

Merry, my dog is a staffy too!
But he's a bit of a dawdler, likes to sniff all the blades of grass Grin
Thus would be fine apart from when a car comes along, he will not come straight to me and even though the roads are v quiet, I worry.
So I only take him when I don't really mind not getting into the swing of things. Or in the summer when the woods are dry and he can do what the hell he wants Grin

Seems like baaaaad weather coming in on Friday, might have to try a bit harder to fit in a run tomorrow or Thursday

Sirzy · 28/01/2014 21:52

I can't wait for spring and some decent weather!

Me either sirzy,
It was so lovely in the summer, leaving my young baby with DP and running away all that newborn stress!

cinnamongreyhound · 28/01/2014 22:08

At least you can see the days getting longer, it fills me with joys Grin

TwelveLeggedWalk · 28/01/2014 22:22

Did a really good three miles yesterday, then a really awful 3.5 miles tonight, but I think I'm coming done with yet another vommy bug from my delightful children, grr.

I always run with my dog, usually on lead on the roads - he's got a very long stride so just lopes besides me making it look ridiculously easy - although tonight he went one side of a bollard and I went the other, which probably looked proper funny if anyone was watching!

ElvisJesusAndCocaCola · 29/01/2014 11:50

It's just so nice not to have to worry about slipping on ice and getting bit by a car in the dark! Roll on spring!

Snowdown · 29/01/2014 12:13

Did 6km in the rain this morning and I really enjoyed it. I found the rain really refreshing and yes much better than icy pavements. I've signed up for a boxing class, my co ordination is shocking, so I'm expecting to feel like a right fool.

About 4.25 miles in 45mins.
Mid afternoon, not my favourite time to go, but sometimes you've got gotta take your opportunities!
Rained the whole way.

I'm about five runs off completing my latest adidas micoach plan, and I've downloaded Runkeeper to try. How does everyone else get on with it?

TwelveLeggedWalk · 29/01/2014 16:24

I mostly love Runkeeper, although it has completely stopped uploading my runs to facebook - which is probably a relief for everyone else on fb, but I had a few psychotic/hilarious friends who would bully me into running if they saw I hadn't posted for a while, and it would shame me into getting out t here.

Occasionally the GPS snarls up and adds loads of distance, which then gives you an AMAZING time. If you're anal like me though you can go back and manually correct it Blush

cinnamongreyhound · 29/01/2014 17:14

I don't like runkeeper personally, prefer endomondo or mapmyrun.

Sirzy · 29/01/2014 17:21

I use run keeper because it is what the friends I have who run use. Works well for me.

Didn't have much time this afternoon but managed 2km with a 7min 11 seconds km which is about 30 seconds a km faster than normal so pleased with that

I used Runkeeper until I got my Garmin, never had any problems with it apart from the odd GPS fail. I tried Endomondo before that but kept getting redirected to a porn site every time I tried to use it Angry

Snowdown · 29/01/2014 17:37

I had similar problems with Endo. I use Runmeter...it's not perfect GPS fail quite often, depending on route but I mostly like it better than the others. I go through periods of not using anything...just enjoying the run and other times I want to pick up speed and fitness and measuring seems to help.

Hmmmm. Thanks for the tips. I think I'll keep the micoach too then, because I've been getting on well with it for years, I just feel like now I've got so much better the plans are a bit restrictive.
I'll try Runkeeper, and maybe others too, see how I get on.
It's sad, but I do find that if I have a new bit of kit to try out I'm MUCH more keen!

EATmum · 29/01/2014 19:36

I like Runkeeper when it works - but do get v frustrated when it fails or decides I've been sprinting!

Fishandjam · 30/01/2014 11:45

I use RunKeeper and find it pretty good. Though once I put in the wrong activity and was rather startled to find I'd done 4.5k of downhill skiing. (Total calorie burn - about 5.)

Been stuck in meetings all day all week at work (ship and debit? No, me neither). So no exercise whatsoever, not even bootcamp. Hoping to at least do parkrun on Saturday.

Sirzy · 30/01/2014 20:44

No run today but went to my first bootcamp session tonight and loved it. If I can move in the morning I will go for a run

No running for me today either. I accidentally fell asleep with DS for nearly two hours this afternoon!
But I did my Pilates class this eve, I love it, and as it's an improves class, it's staying interesting too Smile

cinnamongreyhound · 30/01/2014 21:50

Went for doggy run tonight with 3 other dogs and owners, did 5 miles and feel so much better!!!

MrsShrek3 · 30/01/2014 22:28

Grin at Fish skiing

Fishandjam · 30/01/2014 23:09

Ooh, I'm getting cross now - you've all been running and I've been suffering Death By PowerPoint. I feel sluggish and grouchy and my sciatica is playing up for the first time in ages. Could it possibly be that I'm missing my exercise?! Will try for a brief trot tomorrow evening.

One of our IS blokes has asked the bootcampers if we want to do Tough Mudder in July. My heart says yes, my head says are you fucking kidding.

ElvisJesusAndCocaCola · 31/01/2014 07:15

Tough kidder sounds fab! I'd love to do it, though am more a loner than a team player.

Shoulde run yesterday after work, fried offered to have dd2 at playgroup this morning so planed to do yesterday's run this morning. But poor dd2 has decided to be ill :( missed Mondays run so went out at 5.45 this morning - 5.5 miles. Felt surprisingly ok, as I love early runs, even though I ate a lot of Lebanese food last night!

EauRouge · 31/01/2014 09:03

Fish, come and do the Wolf Run with us in September!

I only had time for a quick run yesterday, managed 5k in 28.08 which I was pretty pleased with. Aiming for a long run this weekend, hope it isn't too bloody windy again.

Elvis 5.45! I dream of going out for early runs but it would involve DD2 not waking me up 4 times a night.

Fishandjam · 31/01/2014 10:47

That's a sweet offer Eau but I think I'm better off aiming for the Bonfire Burn 10k in October (more realistic target!) Maybe next year for the macho stuff Grin

Sirzy · 31/01/2014 11:15

3km done before the snow started.
