Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

Eat, I know exactly what you mean about tedium. I rely on p

...podcasts too, and get bored running the same routes all the time. To keep it fresh I try different routes and mix up types of training eg not always slow run, but some intervals too. The amount of times I've thought to myself, can I really be bothered to keep putting one foot in front of the other...

Having said that, I did 10 miles today, 9.05 min
Miles. V pleased. Out for my birthday dinner tonight and have plenty of cals in the bag now! And have been running round Thetford forest all afternoon with family and friends :)

Hi chocolate, you will find the parkrun lots easier with other people around, especially if you know a group of them already. People are often really supportive, too - I've seen people who are already finished go out and run with slower finishers, which I thought was really nice.

Thursday, that is a fab start to the weekend: go you! :)

EATmum · 25/01/2014 18:42

Thanks Elvis. I think it's just that I'm doing longer runs and have been sticking to routes that I know - definitely need to mix it up a bit. I have a new plan though. When this dastardly half marathon is done, I'm going to stop this distance malarkey. Instead I'm going to visit different places and 'run' them. Last Easter we went to New York and one of my best days was when I went for a run in Central Park. Seemed so iconic. I'm going to get to know new places by running in them. Anyone in?

TwelveLeggedWalk · 25/01/2014 22:29

First time out in 10 days of flu/norovirus/work crisis..

Did a nice 2 miles in my fastest time yet, BUT after nearly 2 weeks off I STILL have shin pain in one leg, arrgh!

But, I didn't collapse in a heap and mostly enjoyed it, so time to get back to it I think Smile

MrsShrek3 · 26/01/2014 10:25

Elvis ....had to read your post twice to make sense. at first look, you are superhuman and can run at over 60mphGrin

we seem to have spent more time in sports shops buying lovely new kit, than actual running Blush
going out to do a 5k ish today with ds1 (who will beat me no doubt)

Sirzy · 26/01/2014 15:49

Hadn't managed to run since last monday but today i NEEDED to run, only managed 2.3 miles in 17 minutes as I didn't have much time but I feel so much better for it! Once upon a time I would have turned to chocolate to 'stress bust' but now running really does help!

Et, I am going to Berlin with my best friend in half term and we are planning some runs in the tiergarten already :) have you heard of Hash House Harriets? Google them if you haven't.

MrsShrek, i do like to think of myself as superhuman :) either that, or shit on an ipad...

Sirzy. I am still grappling with the idea that a short run is better than no run at all, or sometimes actually better than a long run. Sounds like you are better at this than me.

My birthday today so a massive nandos and lots of cinema/film watching. Oh well :)

Sirzy · 26/01/2014 17:33

Most of my runs are short anyway, I haven't built up to past 7km anyway but I work on as long as I get out then it had to be good for me. That is more from a mood boosting pov though although I use it for building up a bit of speed anyway

Happy birthday Elvis!

ElvisJesusAndCocaCola · 27/01/2014 07:08

Thanks Thursday!

Sirzy, do you find running is a good mood lifter for you, then? I often feel much more tired, but more satisfied with myself. Also puts more pressure on at work, as I could be using the time to do more marking...

Sirzy · 27/01/2014 07:54

Ye it's a fantastic mood lifter for me, I tend to use it instead of chocolate now!

Only 2.3 miles in 17 minutes... I think I'm on the wrong thread! That's 7.20/ mile isn't it?

Sirzy · 27/01/2014 11:49

Sorry that should have been km - oops!

Hi All! I'm on the parkrun thread and not sure I'll keep up with 2 but I'd like to join you :)

I've been running for 2 years since starting the c25k while losing 5 1/2st. I am still running 3-4times a week, shortest at parkrun and longest usually up to 10miles as I'm training for my second half marathon. I am a member of a club but can't get to training at the moment due to work commitments :(

EATmum · 27/01/2014 20:52

So yesterday I went out aiming for an 11 mile run, but realised after ten mins that runkeeper wasn't talking to me. Checked (new) phone and it'd switched itself off and wouldn't start again. Then same happened with audible, so I couldn't listen to my new audiobook. Logically I should have been cross - but though it was frustrating it was also a brilliant run! Having been a bit bored while pounding the pavements recently, I went a different route, played my (eclectic) music on shuffle and just enjoyed it. I tried to gauge my distance with the time if spent but was a bit hazy about the start time. When I got home I used a mapmyrun type app and it was ten miles rather than eleven. But fun! Smile

Hello cinnamon!
And well done EAT, I'm glad you managed to get a bit of joy back!
I was out for 37mins this morning, covered about 3.5 miles, but I took the dog and he was just an enormous pita. I had to keep stopping for him to catch up, and when I put him in the lead he simply dug his heels in and refused to move!!
I'm glad I didn't let him ruin one of my nice long runsGrin
Still it was nice to swap chores with DP, he did the baby's breakfast

Sirzy · 28/01/2014 11:27

I made the mistaake of walking 5k in heels yesterday. The resulting blisters made this mornings run very difficult but I managed 2.5k in 20 mins, wanted to do longer really but feet wouldn't let me

OP posts:
ElvisJesusAndCocaCola · 28/01/2014 18:58

5k in heels! I couldn't do 500 metres. Hope your feet are ok - anyone aroun to give you a nice massage?

Didn't go out yesterday as dd2 was sick so I stayed at home with her. Instead I route marched her around for 1.75 hrs while she slept in the buggy. Burned off same calories as a run, then replaced those with lots of chocolate Blush

Ran today - 5 miles, with three separate miles at about 8.30/mile, with slower bits in between. I know the benefits of interval training but really have to force myself to do it. My half marath

ElvisJesusAndCocaCola · 28/01/2014 19:00

...on us in about 6 weeks, eek, and I really do want a sub-2hr time. Hi cinnamon, btw - when is your half.

Sounds like everyone has managed to get out despite the cold - I'd love to run with a dog, if I had one, but I guess they do interfere with your plans sometimes!

EATmum · 28/01/2014 19:49

Circuits tonight, head full of goo and aching. Could be a long class. I want to be on my sofa! Sniff.

Snowdown · 28/01/2014 20:04

Didn't go out Sunday or Monday, the weather was just too miserable. Bootcamp in the park this morning, sun was shining. I have parcels coming tomorrow so I'm not sure if I'll get a run in tomorrow.

MerryBuddha · 28/01/2014 20:44

2 mile walk, 3 mile run, 2 mile walk. I always run with my dog, I go across fields, very isolated and my large Staffie scares any perverts way. She either runs along side me or across the field chasing birds. Perfect running partner. Also makes me go out even when I don't want too.
Tomorrow a hour on the bike is planned followed by a lovely long sauna!!

MrsShrek3 · 28/01/2014 21:05

dses and I did a 3 mile sprint on Sunday Shock Blush sigh.... should've gone with ds1's pace not mine. luckily my muscles are back in action today, but stairs nearly finished me off yesterday. One day I'll learn not to take off like a flippin rabbit Blush I put it on runkeeper and was astounded at the pace readings. ds1 was disgusted Grin (he's a regular 5k competitive under 15!)

really, how do you learn to pace a longer run when you're naturally a sprinter?

Sirzy · 28/01/2014 21:12

It wasn't planned, I took my car for its MOT and instead of just walking into town (about 0.5km away) I decided to take myself off for a long walk, after 3km I realised my feet were sore but had to carry on!

cinnamongreyhound · 28/01/2014 21:25

I run with my dogs too MerryBuddha, distance I'm doing dictates if it's one of both :)

It's 2nd march ElvisJesusAndCocaCola Cambridge boundaries marathon but you can do half and get bus back!

I did 4 miles today, was in a lovely stride could have done several more, damn life for getting in the way!
