Do you/ should you run with a head cold?

I've woken up with a head cold. My nose is stuffed up and I have sinus pain too.

I might feel better after I've had a shower/ been up and about all day BUT...

Do you run if you have a cold?

I think I'll find it a LOT harder if I have to mouth breathe the whole time.

I avoid exercise when ill, it'll only compromise your immune system and make it harder to recover from the virus, apart from that it's horrid when you feel ill :(

If you have sinus pain I'd grant yourself a few days off. Otherwise I'd run but not far or fast.

scaevola · 12/10/2013 21:59

Go for a walk instead.

I've got a head cold atm, haven't run since Monday.

I user the rower for half an hour on Thursday and started to do some bodyweight stuff and just felt too tired, and not with it.

I normally do 3 x cardio sessions and 2 x free weight sessions in a week but I've done half of that this week and I'm not going back to the gym til I feel better. No point.

The advice from coaches at my running club is above the neck fine to run, might even make you feel better. Below the neck rest until well.

So headache and runny nose, no excuses! If you can feel it in your chest or have a coughyou need to rest

I'm surprised anyone would need to ask.
If I'm too ill to exercise I know from how I feel that I'm not up to it and it'll do me more harm than good.

I dont need any kind of above the neck/below the neck rule of thumb.

Suddengeekgirl · 13/10/2013 08:41

Yes I'd heard the above/ below neck run but tbh I think that may only apply to running addicts! Wink

I still feel lousy, still got sinus pain and now I have a really sore throat/ lost voice so there won't be any running for a bit longer yet.

Anyone know how's best to pick up C25k after having a week or more off? Confused

Not good to combine exercise and a virus. You can't tell what it is at this stage, so err on the side of caution and live to run another day!

Fridayschild · 13/10/2013 08:52

I'm with the above the neck crowd. I have run and got rid of colds this way.

cinnamongreyhound · 13/10/2013 09:00

I run depending in how I feel, have stopped after 10mins because I haven't been able to carry on and I've also had really good runs with a cold and felt better.

I would restart c25k where you left off, a week of should be ok. Hope you feel better soon.
