Knee bruising after impact exercise

One of my knees keeps getting a noticeable bruise over the kneecap after impact exercise (circuits / running). It's a bit sore, but not horribly painful - e.g. I can walk on it easily (and pretty much forget about it) and can run through the discomfort. The pain is mainly towards the outside I'd the kneecap (not really over the top of the kneecap). If I don't exercise the bruise goes away, but then comes back when I do. I would quite like to self diagnose and treat this as live somewhere where getting to a doctor is a nuisance and I'm not sure there really are any decent physios (developing world). Any ideas? I've also posted in health (although am otherwise v healthy so think this is purely exercise related).

over the kneecap or alongside it ....
join the club
worn cartilage most likely
do NOT run through the discomfort
do you do toning / conditioning stuff like yoga to strengthen the little postural muscles in your legs to hold the joint square as you do other stuff ?
it matters (especially when you get to be as old as me)
a physio would probably do a power of good ...
