Walking socks/boots causing soreness above ankle area

I've recently joined a walking group and love it. Problem is that after every walk I'm getting a sort of sore, red swelling around the area above my ankle extending upwards about 2 inches - where my walking sock comes up to. The redness lasts for about 2/3 days.

I'm not sure what's causing this - socks? boots? - but am aware that I'm not very fleshy around this area. Its almost as though I need some kind of padding around this area to protect my flesh from the socks/boots.

Anyone else have this problem? Or can suggest how to deal with this problem?

I had this when walking the Pennine Way. It was hideous. I bought a pair of thorlo walking socks (they went up to about three inches above my ankle bone and got the tops turned down in sunny weather). They were brilliantSmile.

Also if you're not used to having pressure on that place on the ankle it may take a bit of getting used to. What sort of socks are you wearing? iMO its worth paying out for decent socks. I've always found bridgedale very comfortable, and they last for ages...
