Come and join us if you're thinking about starting, have started or have finished and are loving running! Lots of support, advice and general cheering on for everyone. Find the old thread here.

BIWI overpronator is basically someone flat footed, as you run your foot rolls to the middle and your hip should pull it back and therefore reduce the pressure on your knees. If for whatever reason it does it puts extra strain on your knees and can cause pain.

Could well be from your old shoes fromheretomaternity, as I said earlier the bloke in the shop said that I should have had an injury from my right foot rolling in but as I didn't he didn't want to 'straighten' me too much as it could cause a knee injury as I've got used to running the way I did naturally.

Welcome Zatopek, that's some progression!!

Well done Chopstheduck, my trainers were actually nowhere near as muddy as everyone said they'd be :)

OP posts:
Chopstheduck · 19/03/2013 06:15

I think I must overpronate as when I run in the mud and rain, it's the inside of my foot that gets wet first! Next time I get new trainers I am going to get properly assessed.

MirandaWest · 19/03/2013 07:53

Am posting here to make sure I go for a run this morning - seem to be lacking in motivation a bit recently. Am intending to do a park run on Saturday which is a bit of a logistical challenge but will be even worse if I don't go running Grin

BecauseImWoeufIt · 19/03/2013 08:28

I was a bit alarmed yesterday because my shins were sore. I really don't want to have to give up running because I develop shin splints. (Actually I'm amazed to feel that I don't want to give it up! Grin).

Not helped by me managing to bang my left shin hard, twice, at the gym yesterday!

I have got proper insoles in my shoes, and had my gait analysed. But my last few runs have been mainly on roads/pavements, so I think next time I have to make sure I'm running on a more forgiving surface.

They are fine today, however. But rather than go running today as I would have done, I'm going to postpone my next run (which will be 1 x 25 minutes) until Thursday, just in case.

MirandaWest · 19/03/2013 10:02

I ran. Was only 2 miles plus intervals at the end but time was ok. At least it's sunny for once :)

GuyMartinsSideburns · 19/03/2013 10:40

Just marking my place. Ive enjoyed running for the past few years on and off, I get up to 5k and then when the winter starts to pull in I back off.. etc etc I really struggle with motivation too and lack of confidence. Ive looked for a running partner or a group but no luck as yet.

Im quite under the weather today too and this weather isnt helping my mood. I'll read through the thread and hope to get inspired by you all Smile

NurseEzzzaChapel · 19/03/2013 13:37

Hooray! Lots of new names joining in on this thread!

Good news on the ankle: I went to the physio this morning and, as I hoped, I haven?t done anything serious to it. It?s mostly muscular with a little bit of irritation to the tendon. Apparently it?s because I have hypermobile ankles and weak hip muscles. When I walk/run my knees drop inward instead of going over my feet then I compensate by pulling my foot outwards, effectively walking/running on the side of my foot, and because of the hypermobility in the ankles they turn easily. So I?ve now got some exercises to do to retrain my brain to put my knees over my feet so that I don?t keep getting the same injury. The really good news is that I?m allowed to go out running again as soon as the pain goes away enough for me to be able to! So if I can?t manage tomorrow I probably could go out on Friday. Grin

CiderwithBuda · 19/03/2013 14:32

Hi - I did day 2 of C25k today - well day 2 of my amended version of week 1 - did 6 of the runs again. Went straight after taking DS to school and was back home at 9.10. All finished! I was overtaken by a lady with a push chair at one point. Felt bad as I didn't hear her as I had earphones in and she had to overtake me in the grassy verge as path so skinny.

I think I need to do some research into breathing while running. I am slightly asthmatic and got exercise-induced asthma as a child (no Dad I wasn't just unfit!).

Feeling the after effects of the running in my thighs! Getting up off the sofa reminds me!

I like the sound of running with DCs. Any suggestions for encouraging lazy DSs?

cinnamongreyhound · 19/03/2013 20:00

Welcome to all the new people, anyone thinking of doing a park run- go for it! It's so relaxed and they should have a tail runner so you'll never be last Wink

cinnamongreyhound · 19/03/2013 20:05

Whoops clicked post a bit early! I have been for my evening run I usually do once a week with a friend, we've shaved 2 mins off and still chatted. I've had a rubbish few days and although I don't feel any happier for going I was chilled out while out and I know I will sleep better tonight and not lay awake thinking because of it so it helps :)

SarahWithAFringeOnTop · 19/03/2013 20:41

Well done cinnamongreyhound, Ezzza, Cider and everyone else... I am desperate to get back out there. I have crawled off the sofa and back to work so I am hoping to be able to run again by the weekend. I still have a graveyard cough at the moment and am blowing my nose profusely every five minutes (sorry, TMI...) so I think it will be a few days yet. I would never have believed I would miss running so much! Shock

fromheretomaternity · 19/03/2013 21:44

CiderwithBuda I did W1 Day 2 too! Wasn't sure how it would be going out in the dark, but stuck to the roads and actually really enjoyed it, it's lovely to be out and about. Knees holding up so far too which is good news. Planning my next outing for Friday...

cinnamongreyhound · 19/03/2013 22:30

My dh is asthmatic CiderwithBuda, induced by lots of things, he always takes a couple if puffs of ventolin before training. Can't advise on lazy ds's, have dss (11) who came out with me once on his bike and won't again, ds1 (5) who moans most days on the 15 min walk to school and back and ds2 (2) would be up for it but far too small at the moment. Might be good in the future to wear him out Wink

OP posts:
Chopstheduck · 20/03/2013 06:59

I have one who is lazy out of my four - dt2. He WILL be dragged out on his bike over easter so I can still run! I will probably bribe him to come. The others like running, but tend to sprint off then end up tired and wanting to stop. I like running with dt1, he actually is a runner, and is great for speed training! He has his first proper race next week, running for the school.

I'm planning 5k later, hoping to maybe shave a bit more of my pb.

Hope you are better soon, Sarah!

Zatopek · 20/03/2013 20:17

I've decided to stop running for at least 2-3 weeks this time to allow my injury to heal properly. (it's still quite painful to walk after a week- I think it's an adductor strain but can't be sure)

I am reading Chrissie Wellington's Life without Limits (interesting book about one of the greatest British sportswomen you've never heard of) and it's just making me itch to start training again though.

pennygallops · 20/03/2013 21:29

Welcome all you new people.
I did 5k last night, I went out at about 6.30 and it was lovely to see that it wasn't completely dark.

I haven't been out tonight - my DS is poorly, even had to have a day off school (a very rare occasions) and it's been snowing AGAIN. I'll go tomorrow hopefully.

cinnamongreyhound · 20/03/2013 22:01

Training tonight was great! Nearly didn't go due to another shitty day but dh forced me out :)

For those interested in interval training we did 4 min 1/2 marathon pace/50% effort/conversation, 2 min recovery (your choice of stop/walk/jog I do a mum run Wink), 2 min 10k pace/70% effort/panty conversation, 1 min recovery, 1 min 5k pace/85%/odd word, 30 sec recovery and 30 sec full on sprint. 4 min recovery and repeat all, 4 min recovery and repeat all for third time.

OP posts:
pennygallops · 20/03/2013 22:29

Wow! sounds interesting cinnamon, I think I might try that tomorrow. I guess the pace is slightly different from one person to another. Might need to take a stop watch (I think I have one in my classroomGrin). Sorry to here that you are having some rough days at the moment, hope the running is helping.

CiderwithBuda · 20/03/2013 22:50

No run here today but twinges in my knees for sure. Hope they hold up.

BIWI - I bought some Regenovex - will see if it works. I had keyhole surgery on one knee about 13 years ago for arthritis. Other knee has it too.

Cinnamon - I must get some ventolin. Dont currently have any as far as I know. Which is not good really! I don't often get asthma but do sometimes. Generally cat related.

Planning on running tomorrow.

Fromheretomaternity - well done for running in the dark. Not sure I am up for that. I need to run early or I just don't do it.

BecauseImWoeufIt · 21/03/2013 00:03

Cider - my knees seem fine, I have to say. A definite improvement since I started a) taking the Regenovex b) training - hopefully both of those are working!

But I wasn't expecting the shin pain. My left shin is fine, but I've been having some shooting pains this afternoon.

I may try running tomorrow afternoon - depending on the weather. If I can't run tomorrow, I'll go on Friday morning.

I've realised, though, that it really matters to me that I can continue

Chopstheduck · 21/03/2013 07:16

that sounds brilliant cinnamon. I think it would probably kill me though! I did a bit of interval training yesterday, 3 x 1km sprints. I really want to get my speed up now. Once i can run faster than a 'mum run' Wink I'd feel more confident about doing parkrun and stuff. My sprint speed was only 9km/h, though quite a bit up on my usual 7.5km/h Grin There is even a running club in the town nearby which I am looking at enviously! I do need to push myself a bit more, I think I am getting a bit complacent at the slow jog where I don't get out of breath at all!

I did have shin pains very early on, read about shin splints and worried a bit, but it did pass without becoming too serious. I think losing weight has helped too.

Zatopek - that book sounds good, I might have a read of that.

scarletsalt · 21/03/2013 15:56

I did Week 7 run 1 last night at the gym and it was, quite frankly, hateful - I have no idea how I got to the end of it! It is wierd because I did 25 mins of running at the end of week 6 last week and it was fine, but last night at no point did I feel 'yes, this is ok', I struggled through the whole thing. I had done a particularly tough body pump class just before (our normal instructor was off and so the class was something different to what I was used to), but I just felt so crap and just couldnt find my stride. I wasnt even all that out of breath, but the only thing that got me through it was thinking that I had not given up on one run so far in couch 2 5k, and I was not going to give up now! I honestly think it is just a mental thing from here on in.

It also didnt help that my trainers are still giving me blisters which actually bled last night. I had put on some padding stuff, but when my feet got sweaty they just started to move, it was so painful! I have got some compeed plasters now so am hoping they will be better.

Sorry for the self indulgent rant there, I just dont want to give up on this, but last night was hard.....

Welcome to all the new people - you will be so surprised how quickly you build your stamina! And well done to everyone wherever you are on your running journey!

Chopstheduck · 21/03/2013 16:49

wow that does sound rough, scarletsalt! I'm impressed though, I'm pretty sure couldn't run for 25 minutes right after a body pump.

5eggstremelychocaletymadeggs · 21/03/2013 17:11

scarlet I had a run like that earlier this week, it was just crap, no reason that I could think of.

I did wk 7 run 1 last night and kept going at the cool down and ended up running for 38mins and did 6.5km :) its def a mental thing, I find it hard at 8-12mins and once I push past that I am fine :)

SarahWithAFringeOnTop · 21/03/2013 19:31

Was totally confused by the "panty conversation" cinnamon, but now I realise I read it totally wrong Blush Blush Blush Blush

Well done scarlet, that is a real feat of stamina! I was surprised to discover how much of C25K is a mental thing (not that I am physically fit or anything - but for me it was training my mind that I could do it that was the main thing)

I have asthma too (exercised induced from childhood) and the only advice I can offer is (a) ventolin, or whatever it is now, before you go if you're at all unsure, (b) a scarf/buff/something over your nose and mouth if it's cold and (c) don't let your mind tell you that means you can't do it! So go for it, all you fellow wheezers. Though I am still off running with my flu - perhaps I should add (d) do be sensible though. Reduced peak flow before you start is probably an indication it might be wiser to hold off. But once I stop coughing and wheezing I will be back out there again!
