Come and join us if you're thinking about starting, have started or have finished and are loving running! Lots of support, advice and general cheering on for everyone. Find the old thread here.

Don't worry travellingwilbury everyone thinks that, especially me! Just don't think about it and do the other runs leading up to it. Trust "The Programme" and Laura will get you through it. Grin

Demented, give yourself a rest and recover, and maybe go back to the start of week 5? Sounds like you have been overdoing everything!

I just had on my usual jeans to get my gait analysed and rolled the legs up a bit so the chap could see what my ankles were doing. (Oh I say, a gentleman watching ones ankles - how very very!)

pennygallops · 19/05/2013 08:03

Hi guys, sorry it's been a while ... very busy last week. Only managed 1 run Sad Planning on doing a lot more this coming week, including today.

There has been a lot of running from the rest of you.

We had about 100 at our parkrun yesterday in torrential rain. My DS had left his trainer as school and ran in an old pair of school shoes - finished in under 27mins. I ran with my DD this week, so she could finish. I did have to piggy back her over the largest puddles and muddy patches. Very slow time. Finished near the end and the reception we got was fantastic. But that's what parkrun is all about. (DH also ran)

cinnamongreyhound · 19/05/2013 08:53

We had a lady who was a first timer, would guess mid 60's and she got a huge cheer!! Finished in 38mins, pretty good for first one :)

That's great. I'm incredibly inspired by some of the older runners at our parkrun. I hope I'm still running at that stage of life. Next week we are doing a different local parkrun to help celebrate their 5th anniversary.

Our numbers arrived yesterday for a little race we are doing in a few weeks. It's only 2k, my DD wanted to do it and under 9s needed an adult. We finish inside our local football stadium. Should be fun. Both DS and DD are excited about it.

OhThisIsJustGrape · 19/05/2013 10:36

Cinnamon - I think you're local-ish to me, where do you do your park run?

gingerpinz · 19/05/2013 15:38

I agree with UmBongo travellingwilbury, sure you will manage, just don't think too much about it and also re Demented...your body is obviously telling you it needs rest, no shame in that and you will probably come back and find it easier.

I did Wk 3 day 2 this morning. Didn't really feel like it and...tmi warning...have been hacking up green phlegm but basically felt ok so just went but was really grumpy about it! Blush Went to a lovely local country park with DH and DCs so they could go to play park and I could run through woods as fancied a change from the beach.

Really thought I would find it a struggle and couldn't get my phone's GPS to connect so had no idea of pace or anything while I was doing it but tbh, I think that maybe helped because I didn't feel any pressure to run at a certain speed...and once I got going I thoroughly enjoyed it and even ran more than I should have because when I got to the end of my second 3 min run I felt like I could carry on so just did another three minutes! Would never have thought I could run for 6 minutes even a couple of days ago!

Anyway, I have learned a few things from today...

  1. I get grumpy when I don't run and it really cheers me up when I do!!
  2. I am probably better not having speed updates while I am running because it makes me put too much pressure on myself and I don't enjoy it as much (plenty of time for that in the future).
  3. I LOVE running through woods and on uneven, muddy trails.
  4. I actually quite like running when it is quite damp and a wee bit drizzly.

I have decided to do a Race for Life 5k at the end of June because my friend wanted to do it and asked if I might be interested too and although I will only be on Week 8 (if I don't repeat any) I should still be able run most of it...and might even be able to run the whole thing anyway, depending how I feel on the day. It is in the country park I ran in today so I know I love the venue too and it's just quite nice to have a shorter term aim than the race I want to do in September.

Right, sorry this is so long. Hope everyone else is well and enjoys running over the next couple of days.

OhThisIsJustGrape · 19/05/2013 16:59

Well I've had an interesting afternoon. I found a shop near me that does video analysis of gait so popped along there. As luck would have it, being a Sunday and relatively quiet in there, I actually ended up being served by their sports physiotherapist :)

Turns out I was wearing the wrong trainers, they were for over pronaters whereas I'm a neutral apparently. Had a long chat about my knee issues and she said I'm to rest until the inflammation goes down and pain stops then to go back to the very start of c25k and take it very slowly, even if I only run for 30secs at a time.

I've basically don't too much, too soon and in the incorrect trainers Blush but physio was certain that its not the end of running for me which I can't tell you how happy I am to hear that :)

So, I'm £93.50 down for my new trainers but considering that included some fantastic advice from a sports physio, video analysis and no hard sell whatsoever - I think that's money well spent!

cinnamongreyhound · 19/05/2013 19:40

That's nice pennygallops!

Oooh what gave my location away OhThisIsGrapes? My local one is Brandon country park. Good to hear you had a good experience at the shop.

That sounds great gingerpinz, sometimes a change of route is like a breath of fresh air :). I love forest running but Ive never run by the sea which I think is love too!

Well I finished my 10k, was nearly in tears during last km but I enjoyed it. Was warmer than Ive run in for a while and I haven't done more than 8k since I hurt my leg so I should be pleased with 1:03:51 but I'm not!!! My pb is 1:01:01 and I wanted to beat it. There were some killer hills and I didn't stop so that's one thing to be pleased with. Got a t-shirt! I was 350th, winner was 34min something Shock

Oh and the first thing my boys said to me was 'what took you so long mummy'!!!! Good job I love them.

Wow, we'll done Cinnamon, that was a great time especially given that you've been off through injury.

I can't remember exactly what made me realise you were near me, i think it might have been something you said about Breckland earlier in the thread. I'm about 40mins from Brandon, out the other side of Swaffham :)

Don't you just love the things kids say eh? Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 19/05/2013 20:49

You closet to kings Lynn parkrun then? My friend who I run with has done kings Lynn a few times and says she likes it. I can walk to mine in less than 10 mins but I may try the one in bury at Edmunds when it starts in June.

Well I'm just in from a late-ish run. A lovely warm evening, no wind and no rain! I did 7.7k in 49 mins. Not a great time, but with not running much last week I just wanted to enjoy it. And I did, especially after the first 2k (which is generally up hill) - I just got in that running zone. Smile
gingerpins it sounds as if you are experiencing that same zone. Running does make you feel good, doesn't it? You'll easily manage the Race for Life by wk 8.

Ohthisisjustgrape your gait analysis sounds very successful.

Congratulations cinnamon, that is a very respectable time. 34mins! Wow!

jchocchip · 19/05/2013 23:48

Grin at "what took you so long"! Well done cinnamon
I need to run more this week :)

gingerpinz · 20/05/2013 07:56

Fab cinnamon and penny, am inspired! And I thought my 6 mins was good!! Wink

Good luck for this week jchocchip!

yetanotherworry · 20/05/2013 14:44

Cinammon, well done. That's an amazing time even of its wasn't your personal best.

I've just completed W4R1 although it did take a while to get started. Discovered the podcast was missing off my ipod so had to to download it again. Then the PC wouldn't sync with my ipod. I did lots of mental swearing at DH (techie problems are always his fault). I gave up on the idea of going out today and had some lunch. Then I finally thought to try my computer instead of the family computer and it worked. So I went for my run even with a sandwich in belly and yet again surprised myself with how easy the transition between weeks was. I think I have an over-active imagination and ave mental visions of me collapsing in a help miles form home.

pennygallops · 20/05/2013 19:00

Thanks gingerpinz.

Well done yetanotherworry, you obviously progressing and getting fitter.

dementedma · 20/05/2013 20:39

Back out there after my recent wobble. Managed W6R2 but my God it was hard. I am really finding week 6 hard this time round.

NamelessMcNally · 20/05/2013 21:00

Had a good running few days. Did 10k on Saturday, found 4 through 7 hard and then I channeled my inner Forrest Gump and could have run forever. Did it in 58 minutes. Last k was sub 5 minutes!

gingerpinz · 20/05/2013 21:49

Well done demented!....and McNally-fab stuff!

Beautiful evening for running here-kind of damp and misty after heavy rain earlier, but sun out too, sky a gorgeous pink and birds singing. But unfortunately not a run day for me so hoping tomorrow will be similar.

NamelessMcNally · 20/05/2013 21:53

Ging, I've looked out tonight working it was run night too. Never thought I'd think like that.

cinnamongreyhound · 20/05/2013 21:58

Glad you had a good run pennygallops, its nice to just go and run!

Well done notanotherworry, you will not collapse! There is a lot in the mind with running.

Great you got back out there and completed it dementedma, onwards and upwards from now on :)

Fab time NamelessMcNally! That's what I'd like to be at, my club copper standard is 57mins for 10k. I'm between copper and bronze for my 5k so would be good to be the same for 10. Sounds like you'll be great on Friday!

Was planning to run Tuesday and weds this week but my friend wanted to go tonight. I agreed as I haven't run with her for ages and then she had to cancel so we're going tomorrow after all. I think this is good as I've been getting achier (if thats a word) as they day has gone on :(

OP posts:
UmBongo · 20/05/2013 22:00

Well done demented I think week 6 is tough because you finish week 5 with the 20 minuter and immediately (or at least I did) think "Thats it. I'm a runner" I found it hard in week six because you have to start more runs not just settle down. I have just done week 7 run 3 and found it hard to settle, took over 5 minutes, but after that I managed ok, same pace as last time and managed just over 2 miles in the time. And then added another minute on to help transition to week 8 (yikes).

yetanother I have written dh's name and phone numbers on a piece of paper that I have tucked into the pocket on my running leggings! This is obviously for when I collapse in a heap miles from home too! (Glad it's not just me with an over-excitable imagination!)

pennygallops · 21/05/2013 05:31

So I'm awake at this silly hour, for some silly. It is a run day for me, so I'm going to finish my breakfast and get out there whilst the rest of the house are sleeping. Slightly damp morning but it looks very tempting.
That's a very impressive time namelessmcnally. I haven't a managed a sub-60 min 10k yet. But I can related to that 'inner Forest Gump'.
I think a lot of people struggle with wk 6 dementedma, I know I did. But think about how far you have come!
Right I'm going to change into my running gear. Back soon....

pennygallops · 21/05/2013 05:31

Whoops .... for some silly reasons. (Overuse of the word silly Blush)

Chopstheduck · 21/05/2013 07:19

pennygallops, it's like that here too, perfect running weather.

mcnally, that is fab, well done!

ohthisisgrape, that sounds very thorough, I really must go for an analysis next time I need trainers.

I'm off to Norfolk this weekend. Really wanted to go for a run along the coast. Our hotel in in Acle though so I'd have to drive to the coast then drive back for a shower! Acle is very small and surrounded by busy roads afaik so I may end up running around in circles if I do make it out!

cinnamon, you should be pleased! That is a fantastic time, and you are still working at getting back to strength.

I went yesterday, day 4 of my program, a 5 mile run. I was feeling rough (upset stomach) and wasn't sure I was going to be able to manage it, but I got into it and really enjoyed it. Though the last mile was a bit tough, one of those gentle but never ending slopes uphill! I think I prefer shorter steeper hills. I have completely taken the skin off the end of my big toe now though. I think I really should have bought bigger trainers. I have worn a hole in the lining at the back of one too, I think soon I will have to get some new ones.
