sorry fruitpastille I didn't mean to imply you were overweight, prob getting my posts mixed up when reading! Blush

fruitpastille · 08/05/2013 16:38

No problem duck! I would like to lose a bit but mainly would like to improve fitness and tone up. I dream of being able to enter a 10k, or even something longer. My brother has taken up triathalons in his mid forties and i am envious of the change in him!

Dingle · 08/05/2013 16:56

I feel a bit of a fraud! I wouldn't have the confidence to run outside!Blush I run in the hidden comforts of my garage! Several years ago we invested in a running machine and I do enjoy the fact that I can pace myself better, especially as a newbie like me!

It does make me wonder though if I am pacing myself right. I have only just started, due to do Week 1 -r2 tomorrow, I am "walking" at 4mph and "running" at 5mph. Should I be pushing myself harder?

Oopla · 08/05/2013 20:49

Hello everyone Grin

I've been walking 3-6 miles a day briskly for just over a week, did first interval run tonight. Wowsers what a learning curve. Realised quickly I was running like a frothy mouthed pack of dogs was chasing me instead of actual steady pace! So have limited movements and slowed it down, the last run was much much easier. Really bizarrely looking forward to doing it again!

Keep it up, you're fantastic! Grin Xx

cinnamongreyhound · 08/05/2013 21:35

Well done all who've been out and new ladies :)

I did 56 mins tonight but my endomondo crapped out and says I only did 5.4k!! Two of my km took over 15mins, clearly that's not the case so grrrrrr Angry. Judging by my friends route I think I did 9ish km so feel confident I'll manage my 10k race but its hurt by the end :(

Wow cinammon that's good stuff, even if technology let you down!

I'm on W6 now and am going to sign up for the Race for Life on 1 June - whoop! I don't know whether I'll be able to run a full 5k by then but I will give it my best shot. It's in Regents Park which is very flat so that should help!

jchocchip · 09/05/2013 07:31

I've had endomondo do funny things when under trees quite often... do like the way it tells the pace you are running at when it works though

Oopla · 09/05/2013 08:06

Need to sort out some kind of way of organising iPhone when running, I've been tucking it in my bra which is always when the GPRS seems to luck out! Boobs are some kind of faraday box Grin
How do you carry yours?

cinnamongreyhound · 09/05/2013 08:29

And I think running at 5mph is very respectable! I vary between 6 and 6.5mph but I've been doing it a while now.

I put my phone in the zip at the back of my leggings Oopla. Have Jo boobs since I lost weight so doubt I'd fit a phone in my bra :(

OP posts:
BIWI · 09/05/2013 08:46

I use one of these Oopla. Just big enough to get my car keys, a couple of tissues and my iPhone in. And it sits very snugly on the waist, rather than bouncing around when I run.

5madthings · 09/05/2013 14:23

I have a running belt line biwis but I couldn't get the karri or one as my phone didn't fit in the pocket, well it did but not with the headphones plugged in! They are very goods just check to make sure your phone will fit. The karrimor one said all smart phones will fit and my friends iPhone fits but my Samsung galaxy didn't fit! Odd. I got a different one from a local sports shop, they are all very similar.

I feel smug today as I got up and went for an 8.5km run at 6am!! I am not a morning person but for some reason woke at 5:30 and figured I may as well do something productive! I still feel all energetic it really set me up for the day and I shall do it again, rather than running in the evening :)

migrant · 09/05/2013 14:26

Picture the scene..... Here am I out running tonight, doing wk5, day 3 (you know, the one where it suddenly kicks up from 8mins to 20 mins!!)

I've got the dog with me on one of those extendable leads and she gets behind me. Determined not to stop, I give the lead a jerk and hear a sort of "humph"" noise behind me. Usually that's enough to convince the dog to catch up and stop sniffing, but not tonight. So I give the lead another yank, nearly lose an arm to the backwards force and finally conceed to stop.

When I turn round I realise that the poor dog has all four legs tied up in the lead and is lying on her side being pulled up the road by me!! She looked like a hog roast!

No harm done, poor dog instantly up and sniffing again (and I completed the run)

5madthings · 09/05/2013 14:31

Sorry I shouldn't laugh.... Grin glad dog is OK!

migrant · 09/05/2013 14:39

Husband in hysterical giggles! Although it could also have been my impersonation of dog with all 4 ankles touching each other!

Does it count as weight training if you tow your dog???!

travellingwilbury · 09/05/2013 14:44

Hee hee , I love that.

Dingle , i am also using a treadmill , I like watching the numbers and I feel too nervous about running outside . I just know I will see someone I know , I have.no idea why I care but I do .

migrant · 09/05/2013 15:00

Would running after dusk be any help? I'm also a shy runner. But darkness covers everything and spares my blushes! Now I'm feeling better I've invested in some better clothing and I'm seriously contemplating a daytime run!! Will see if the dog can keep up now

Haggisfish · 09/05/2013 15:08

Migrant, that is hilarious! Actually snorting with laughter here. am going to do this couch to 5k soon - as soon as 4 month old can be left for a couple of hours at night.

migrant · 09/05/2013 15:12

It's only thirty minutes out of the house and it makes so much difference. I've lost weight and I can't believe that I actually ran for twenty mins tonight ( dog untying excluded!!)

cinnamongreyhound · 09/05/2013 17:23

Well done 5madthings I was an evenin runner until November time when I started my clubs Saturday 8.30 run. I love the feeling you have all day after a morning run but I get up at 6.20 anyway so don't want to on a week day :(

That is seriously funny migrant!! Really did make me laugh!

I agree you don't need a couple of hours just 40 mins Haggisfish, you start the second you're outside your front door :)

Hello all, lurker decloaking here.

I'm about to do W3R3 but am having issues with my ankles. I'm not sure if it is a technique thing, or a trainer thing.

Do we know what the advice re foot strike is? I've read several different things online and it's all confusing me! I think my ankle hits the ground first, which may be the cause of my problems. I don't want to buy new trainers yet as I'm still just getting in to running and don't want to waste money if it doesn't work out.

wizzler · 09/05/2013 22:03

Done my first run tonight... and really enjoyed it . Need to just plan my route a bit better, so I don't end up too far from home .. was trying to follow " Laura" and not clock watch so I was too far away from home when she said " Only 2 runs to go!"
Migrant.. Grin dh wanted me to take the dog with me tonight, you have just proved why that would have been a bad plan!

Chopstheduck · 10/05/2013 07:54

well done for getting out there!

I use this to plot runs. I get bored easily so it's quite handy for working out new routes before I run them!

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn, the idea is to land more on the middle of your foot rather than heel first to avoid injury. I think it's best not to think about it too much tbh! What kind of trainers are you using for now? I think you may be over pronating, and could maybe do with some support, it's probably worth having a look at. linky You don't have to spend a fortune on running shoes, mine were only around £30. Also, aches and things in the early days I think are to be expected, and it will pass as you build strength. :)

Chopstheduck · 10/05/2013 07:56

Grin at the poor hog tied dog!!

I don't like running on the treadmill much. I see people i know sometimes whenout running, but now I just think sod it! At least I can run even if I do look like a wobbly beetroot.

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn · 10/05/2013 08:09

Thanks Chops. I'm using an old pair of Reeboks. I bought them about 7 or 8 years ago to wear to an exercise class. I know I have leg/foot issue. My feet naturally turn out - if I point them forward my knees turn in! I also roll o. The outside of my foot - all of my shoes wear unevenly! Perhaps I'm not built for running! Wink

Chopstheduck · 10/05/2013 09:18

no excuses on this thread! Grin

If you wear down the outside of your shoes, sounds like under pronating to me! You can get your gait analysed at a sports shop if you fancied trying that. You prob need neutral running shoes.
