Lovely evening for a run today Smile

Can anyone tell me what the etiquette is in a race regarding listening to music? I can't seem to run without something to listen to and keep me going, but I've entered for Race for Life and it seems like it would be... well, sort of rude to be running with my headphones firmly in and not interacting with anyone else. But I don't know if I can manage it without Confused Anyone?

pennygallops · 23/04/2013 21:21

chopstheduck some of my 5 runs are light - Wednesday is led by my DS (10), they're always lighter.

Welcome travellingwilbury.

I had a fun PE lesson today based on the London Marathon Grin. We watched a few highlights whilst they changed and then discussed style, pace and technique. We went outside and I used my GPS watch to get my class running at the pace of the pros and we sustained it for about 2 mins. We did different paces and lengths of runs. Some of the parents were watching by the end Blush. But I now have a few children who want to run marathons.

So today I've run 1.7k in my PE lesson and 5.7k (at a steady 35mins). A good day's running.

pennygallops · 23/04/2013 21:24

sarahwithafringe I only know about parkrun, and they prefer people not to wear headphones. It's see as quite a social event so they prefer you not to wear them. I think that's the reason I no longer run with music.

cinnamongreyhound · 23/04/2013 21:26

Glad to hear you're back on track NurseEzzzaChapel!

Some races ban them SarahWithAFringeOnTop but if it doesn't say you can't have them then I don't see why not. Race for life is a very easy going event ime so I think you'll be fine. I ran with headphones in my 10k race but it was off road and its usually the danger of running on the road and not hearing traffic that makes race organisers ban headphones. I only ever run with one headphone as I like to hear what's going on around me.

I run parkrun with my headphones, have never seen anything about not wearing them with my parkrun pennygallops.

One of my friends is a parkrun director for one of the runs near Manchester, (he's done nearly 200 runs). He was the one who told me about the headphones, saying it was preferred that people didn't use them.

pennygallops · 23/04/2013 21:34

...He might well be wrong.

5madthings · 23/04/2013 21:36

The park run I did at the weekend didn't say anything re headphones, some used them some didn't.

I know at the bupa 10k in London you are allowed them but for other find not, on any that involve road running they normally say no headphones, it seems very variable.

I ran without and it was my first run without music so I found it harder to pace myself but I was running with a friend and we chatted a bit as we went round which was nice :)

I did 8km last night and this evening g did 6km but to nights run felt harder than last nights Confused

UmBongo · 23/04/2013 23:21

W4R1 tonight, with 3 extra minutes on the last run, so quite pleased with myself! 19 minutes in total.

I did the first 3 minuter on the road and then the rest on grass. I have signed up for parkruns, are they generally on the grass or paths?

cinnamongreyhound · 24/04/2013 07:14

If you go to the course page from the parkrun website there should be a course map UmBongo. The ones I'm aware of differ, the gorleston one I was planning to do was all pavement as far as I could tell. My local one is mostly forest tracks which are very sandy and some of man made paths around the country park and a very tiny bit of grass.

Totally random but as I can run today due to a meeting my mum offered to take ds1 (with ds2) to gymnastics so I can run Thursday, otherwise it would be another 8.30pm run. It's really nice she's beginning to realise how important it is to me and so sweet of her to offer :)

If you have a choice of park run, I would also look at how many people attend each week. I know one that is very close to mine gets regularly 350 runners, personally I would find that hard. (But we are intending on running there for the 5 year anniversary run). Another near me takes you up and over a pedestrian bridge. Some are flatter than others, I know York is at the race course and all tarmac - so it's pretty flat and fast. So it's worth investigating a bit, if you have a choice.

Cristiane · 24/04/2013 09:15

Hello, I'd like to join please. I am travelling with work and should be able to fit in a run this evening :)

Please can you let me know which of the podcasts I should download?

NurseEzzzaChapel · 24/04/2013 09:24

yetanotherworry, a shuffle jog is what I call it when I?m running so slowly it doesn?t feel like running, it just feels like shuffling along, and I could actually fairly easily walk faster, but it still counts as running because both my feet are off the floor at some point in each step.

My parkrun has over 400 coming most weeks and is mostly run on tarmacked paths. They do sometimes ask that runners using headphones only have one in so that they are still aware of their surroundings, possibly because the park ground staff drive vehicles along the pathways occasionally, etc.

NurseEzzzaChapel · 24/04/2013 09:26

Cristiane, welcome! Go here and either download the lot for free, or just download week one for now to get started.

Cristiane · 24/04/2013 09:40

Thanks nurse - I am on my iPhone and it seems to want me to have flash player - not sure i can get it? Any tips?

NurseEzzzaChapel · 24/04/2013 09:48

How odd. I don't have an iPhone so I'm not quite sure. How do you normally get music from iTunes onto your iPhone? Perhaps you could do it the same way. Searching for "couch to 5k" in iTunes comes up with the NHS podcasts (which is what I linked to) and some apps which you could download instead. I think some of these let you run to your own music and just interrupt to tell you when to run and when to walk.

Cristiane · 24/04/2013 09:54

Nurse thank you! I've found it. I am incredibly useless with anything techy

But now on my way. Does the nhs one have music?

UmBongo · 24/04/2013 09:56

Thank you penny and nursezza I will do some research into which one to try between now and week 8 when I may actually be able to complete one! (That and working out how exactly I am going to escape on a saturday morning!)

Shuffle jog sounds very familiar, I feel that I am being overtaken by arthritic snails sometimes, but there is still a definite run to the movement not walk!

Good luck Cristiane!

Cristiane · 24/04/2013 09:58

Thank you. Quite excited to get going

Chopstheduck · 24/04/2013 10:09

NHS one does have music, bit dodgy at times, but does the job!

Good luck!

I'm off in a bit, think going to go to the gym though, the sun is blazing down here.

5madthings · 24/04/2013 10:11

I used the zenlabs couchto5k free app and it let's you play your own music :)

cinnamongreyhound · 24/04/2013 13:24

Welcome Cristiane and well done for getting started. Having just looked at how to get the podcast I have discovered you now need a posdcast app to download them direct to iPhone, you learn something new every day!

Welcome Christiane. I used the NHS C25K, I liked Laura's encouragement. The music was funny, I just got used to it.

StarlightMcKenzie · 24/04/2013 18:42

I've got as far as ordering my sports bra. Due any day.

Then what next?

Cristiane · 24/04/2013 19:39

Hello Grin Grin

Just back from first run! I am in London for two days so for first time in about a year got some time on my own, in the open air, during daylight, running over hamsptead Heath. I was in heaven!

Thanks everyone for the welcome and support

starlight have you got the podcasts?
