I can't believe I managed to do it! I am very unfit and about 3 stone overweight. But I did it Grin

Just wanted to share with someone as I'm very proud of myself at the moment Blush

Wow hats off to you all!

I am waiting for my trainers to arrive so today was just a walk 2miles in just over 30mins. However I am getting faster and fitter. Had to add an extra diversion so I didn't get back to work too soon and I didn't pause on the little hill either.

My 3 mins run on the partial day 1 I tried was actually 2x1min runs and a couple of " gosh I must stop" short minutes. Dunno how long it'll take to even get all 8x1 mins done......

mashpot · 04/06/2013 15:44

Ok, so what you're saying is I could technically go out tonight, I don't need to order anything and wait for it to arrive. Gulp. Thanks.

Do you all use different apps, any recommendations? Thank you.

wibblyjelly · 04/06/2013 16:01

I'm using the NHS app Mash.
What I would say is the first week will be hard. I found I started to get eager to go out from the second week onwards, as that's when you start to see your progression. Being on here helps as well, as you get lots of support.

Go out tonight, see how you get on, then let us know how you got on! Grin

FoundAChopinLizt · 04/06/2013 17:59

Hi all.

Have come to a grinding halt this week. First a fluey virus, then today, just when i was getting over it, I passed out in the supermarket because I got a nasty endometriosis pain.

On the funnier side, when the first aider and a passing nurse came to help she took my pulse which was around 56 and she said 'its very slow, are you normally fit?' so I said 'I'm a runner' ...first time I've said that to anyoneGrin

So no running until at least Thursday, which means a whole week out.

sparkle12mar08 · 04/06/2013 18:23

Mash - Honestly, my very first w1 r1 was literally in the clothes I was wearing - jeans, some ropey old walking trainers and my Berghaus winter kagool thingy. I knew if I didn't do it then, I never would. And I thought I was going to be a little bit sick after the third one minute run, and had no idea whether I'd make the end of the session. It wasn't until week three I think that I got proper trainers, and I still don't have any proper clothes (though I'm waiting on an order). I run in a cotton vest top and and cotton jersey lightweight long sleeve number, and some ten-year-old heavy cotton jogging bottoms, I've just dug out some shorts in the same material too. Even now I keep having to remind myself when I want to cry out "It's not fair", that it isn't necessarily meant to be easy, it is meant to be a workout afterall.

As for apps, I quite like the Zenlabs c25kfree one, but I've had a lot of crashes with it recently where it conks out and I ended up over running. But it does let you play your own music, and the structure is almost exactly the same as the nhs one. It also tells you when you are half way so you can simply turn round if you're not doing a circular route. I liked abandoning myself to it, judt doing what it said, when. Not having to think about it, judt doing as I was told.

wibblyjelly · 04/06/2013 19:31

Found hope you feel better soon. Thanks
Well, I ran without Laura. 3.6 km in 42 minutes. I had a sneaky 1 minute break once I'd got to 30 minutes. I felt like I was cheating in Laura with The Foo fighters and Green Day!
For those running 5k+, do you do it as non stop running, or do you allow yourselves short breaks? I've been thinking I'd do the 5k non stop, but that's looking rather ambitious at the moment!

Theyoniwayisnorthwards · 05/06/2013 10:27

Did W5R2 last night and felt great. My hip seems to have sorted itself out (stretching helps!) and I'm enjoying it again. First time I did an 8min run so feeling quite proud of myself. Week 6 is the big one isn't it?

wibblyjelly · 05/06/2013 11:30

Theyoni yes it is, but its not bad once you get going . Well done! Grin

sparkle12mar08 · 06/06/2013 09:54

I hope nobody minds me unloading here, I do seem to be monopolising the thread atm!

I feel quite deflated this morning. I've ordered running tights, a top, and a jacket, and whilst I thought they were cheap at under £35 for the whole lot (quality isn't great and the fit of the tights is odd but it'll do fine as starter wear), dh took one look as I was opening them and sighed "So how much did that lot cost then?" and did a full eye roll-y thing when I told him. I was expecting something like "Wow that's a bargain and you're doing so well, keep it up!" etc etc and so it fells like a real slap in the face Sad

I know he's actually very proud that I've started and am continuing something positive for my health, he's said that before, but I'd hoped £35 wouldn't be an issue. Especially seeing as he ordered an extra Virgin Wines case at £90 last week without mentioning it to me. He's also off out on a meal with work colleagues tonight, and does so most months. The way he said it this morning just seems so contrary to how he's been up to now.

But it's not really about the money - it's just that one little comment and the look on his face, has generated a totally emotional response, he's really hurt my feelings. I'm supposed to be starting some distance training today and now I don't want to. How self sabotaging is that?!

wibblyjelly · 06/06/2013 10:06

Oh sparkle Sad
I would try and turn that into energy, and start your long distance running tonight regardless. We believe in you, and I agree, it was a bargain!!
Where did you get your bits from? I probably need to get some proper running clothes, but didn't want to invest in any until I knew I was serious about this.

I've decided that tonight I am running 5k. I don't mind how long it takes me, and I'm going to allow myself a couple of breaks. Keep your fingers crossed for me Grin

Theyoniwayisnorthwards · 06/06/2013 10:41

Sparkle I think everyone can find change unsettling, even if it's positive. His eye roll is about him and how he feels and its not about you. Maybe your determination and staying power is making him question his own health and lifestyle. Maybe he's unsure about how to relate to the new inspired you. My DP and I are both guilty of this, when I quit smoking he got huffy (while insisting he was delighted) because he had to confront his own habit. When he quit drinking for a month I felt like a lush.

sparkle12mar08 · 06/06/2013 13:19

Well swivel on that Mr Grumpy Pants! I just did 7.5km in 55mins - 5 reps of 10mins running, 1 min walking GrinGrinGrin 10k, I'm coming to get you!

The very last repeat was okay once I started it, but I'd mis-counted in my head and thought I was done, so it was a bit of a shocker when the app said 'start running' again! I did twice round my loop run but I'm going to have to study the map and find something more interesting I think. The advantage of this one though is that there's a pub at the end - how cool would that be, a nice 10k run mid morning, pitching up at the pub for lunch Grin

wibblyjelly · 06/06/2013 13:31

Yay!! Well done Sparkle

wibblyjelly · 06/06/2013 19:37

I know the main thing is I went out, but I really wasn't happy with that run. I didn't get into a rhythm and I found it really hard going. Never mind, I'll do better on the next one!

FoundAChopinLizt · 06/06/2013 21:43

Well done Sparkle. I can see why you got upset.

Is your dh sporty? You're maybe unsettling him by getting fit- it winds some people up because they know they should do it themselves. Or if he is sporty you're maybe treading on his toes? Also in a relationship everything staying the same can feel safer. Or maybe he's just a tightwad. I am usually, but getting fit is priceless. Sorry for the analysis, but I like to get to the bottom of things when normally nice people behave oddly.

My dh was tutting about the cost of my running class, but I mentioned that the cost of his three pints weekly in the pub was more than my weekly class Grin

Also on another thread, or maybe this one, someone said their running kit was getting better value the more they run. So divide the cost by the number of runs and it will sound cheap in a years' time.

FoundAChopinLizt · 06/06/2013 21:44

I went to my class tonight, ran 28mins and some drills and stretches at the end. Next week we're doing a practice on the 5k course.

wibblyjelly · 10/06/2013 11:32

Bah! Sad. Went over on my ankle this morning. I'm not sure if I should risk a run on it later or not. It's not hurting all the time, so hopefully I'll be able to manage it.

FoundAChopinLizt · 10/06/2013 11:56

Oh dear Wibbly. Hope it recovers quickly.

I just did my first wk9 run, 30 mins! Managed fine, luckily it wasn't so hot today which made it easier.

I've now got 2 weeks to build on my pace before my race. Think I'll abandon the NHS app and my my own running playlist, until I'm ready for the C25K+ app after the race.

sparkle12mar08 · 10/06/2013 13:32

Ooof. 7.87k in 54mins. Ran in my new gear. It's okay, jacket is v short and I kept wanting to tug it down - not quite ready for the world to see the full gloriousness of my lycra-clad arse just yet! Also ran without a water bottle as I forgot to take it, and I must say my arms, shoulders and neck were moving much more freely without it.

Wibbly - I'd be inclined start your workout tonight, but just be prepared to take it really easy to start with to gauge what your ankle will stand. If all seems well after 5mins or so then carry on, but don't run through actual pain, stop and walk back if it gets to that point.

FoundAChopinLizt - I think you're right that dh is probably a little unsettled. This is now my tenth week running, and I suspect he thought I'd cave after three to four weeks - I am not a naturally sporty person, nor even a particularly active one for that matter. He's also become a lot more self-competitive on his bike in the last month or so - pushing himself for further distances, harder routes, faster times. We did have a bit of a chat over the weekend and I totally accept that he really didn't mean anything by the comment - he thought he was being ironic and ribbing me good naturedly, whereas I heard 'you've got bad judgement, why have you bought such rubbish' etc. Totally my (mis)interpretation, and I think I was also a bit sensitive because the quality really is reflected in the (cheap) price.

FoundAChopinLizt · 10/06/2013 13:43

Sparkle

My dh is cycling much more since I started running. He's got the tracking apps and is losing weight. I'm pleased for him as he has a family history of heart problems. I'm still waiting for my two DSs to 'catch' the fitness bug-oldest dd was the one who started it in our family with her running.

I got my kit from sports direct quite cheap, and so e from Aldi, but seems ok so far. Dd has posh Ron Hill stuff, so we'll see if it lasts as well as the cheap stuff!

sparkle12mar08 · 10/06/2013 14:10

Mine is from sportsdirect too! I went for their Karrimor brand, but there's no way in hell I'd pay what they say is the full list price - £45 for a pair of polyester running tights, £45 for a papery thin, single layer polyester jacket? No way! The cut, seaming and stitching on both of them was shaky and I think the jacket would tear very easily in a fall, or brushing past hedges etc. But I simply don't have the money to shop anywhere else and I can't run any longer in what I have, it's just too warm.

I also don't have a choice in continuing to run/exercise - my mum died at 46 from heart problems and my dad at 50 from poor lifestyle & health choices, I cannot and will not leave my own children in the position I was, when there's something I can do about it.

wibblyjelly · 10/06/2013 17:43

Just been for a short but sweet run of 1.78 k in 20 minutes. Didn't want to push it on my ankle, and figured a short run today was better than injuring myself and being out of action for longer.

sparkle12mar08 · 10/06/2013 18:13

Good call Wibbly!

wibblyjelly · 10/06/2013 21:17

Thanks! Pleased I went out, but I've just had my first proper look at my ankle, and it's quite swollen. It doesn't hurt too much when I walk or run, it's a only if I twist it. Very strange. Off to bed now to lie down and elevate it Smile

TwasBrillig · 10/06/2013 21:36

I've just found this thread as the title grabbed me - I'm just starting out, have done the first two 'runs'. I'm wondering whether to start another 'I'm just starting' thread for people like me, as you're nearly all finished! Well done though, its really inspiring to skim through and see people get there.

Any encouragement to a newbie? When did you notice changes to your body? Is there a point where you get hooked? I'm obese and dodgy mental health post second baby so hoping it will help!!
