Anyone else training for a half marathon?

golemmings · 23/07/2012 22:25

I graduated from c25k earlier this year and ran my first 10 race in June. A friend has told me that I can do a half marathon in the autumn so I've signed up for one.

I'm a week into the training programme (using the rw one for 2:00-2:15 finishes) and I'm finding it really hard going.

Is there anybody else who is doing a half who wants to share moral support/abuse/highs/lows?

Welcome Lilleth!

Did a 12 mile today - 10 miles at my ideal race pace and jogged the rest slowly home. Am now fervently wishing that I could go to bed and not entertain two small people all afternoon. Ugh. Wink

LillethTheCat · 23/09/2012 15:47

Thanks for the welcome.

Im wanting to go the Great North Run. Ive always wanted to do that and as I live close I fancy giving it a go for my first half marathon. I do intend to other slightly lesser known ones.

I did my 7 miles this morning which was the furthest I have ever done and Im pleased with myself. I enjoyed every minute of it too, which is always a good thing.

Whoops about getting the day wrong. I am very Envy about people living in NYC (I assume that C Park is Central Park and the race was in 5th Ave in NYC) I imagine it all to be like in Sex and the City, but Im probably wrong.

onedev - I have seen races mentioned on the Runnersworld website. All different lengths and types. You can't see some of the details about some of the races as you need to subscribe, but you can see when and where races are and can see all the details for the races that are occuring soon.

Grin at Lilleth. I can't speak for humble, but my lifestyle isn't exactly SATC! Glad you enjoyed your run today. We have been enjoying the sunshine and had a long walk, but no running today.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 23/09/2012 21:42

Kiwi - hope you made it through the afternoon Grin

golemmings · 23/09/2012 21:53

Ran 12 miles today in just under an hour which I was pleased with. I did come home walking like john Wayne though. I could have run another though if necessary. It was all good to 10miles and then got harder. I'm ready for the hm though. Just 2 weeks and about 30 miles to go!

I'm harbouring thoughts about the London marathon though...

good grief lemmings - well done!

onedev · 23/09/2012 22:23

12 miles in just under an hour - surely that puts you in elite status - that's amazing! Well done!

humblebumble · 23/09/2012 23:12

wow! golemmings Grin amazing! I am hoping to do a marathon next year.

lilleth hmmm definitely no SATC lifestyle for me either ... however, I do enjoy being here.

tiredemma · 24/09/2012 08:00

This is such a great thread.

Im going out tonight for a 45 minute run with my running club (we run for 45 mins then see what distance we have ran- generally cover 4.5 miles/ 5 miles)

I have signed up for some 10k runs over the next few months and plan to try my next half marathon some time in the spring.

anyone in the midlands? if you have any recommendations for local 5/10k or 10 mile runs I would be interested.

im in the best shape I have been in my life. have to keep at it!!
I feel amazing- still overwhelmed from last week-

LillethTheCat · 24/09/2012 08:14

12 miles in under an hour, that's really good I'd love to be that good but at 33 I don't know if I ever will be now though I'm happy just running as good as I can

golemmings · 24/09/2012 08:51

No, no, no. Sorry 2 hours. It was just under 2 hours. Not elite at all. Just a novice bumbling along but clearly my fingers have greater aspirations than my legs!

golemmings I was about to ask if you are actually Paula Radcliffe Grin

tiredemma · 24/09/2012 17:47

Golemmings - I felt justifiably inferior when I saw your post this morning!

colleysmill · 24/09/2012 18:01

Hello I posted a while back on about page 2 but have slipped out of view!

Big congrats to the GNRs! My friend ran it and said it was a tough old course!

I'm still training for mine which is now just under 5 weeks to go. I've had a good look on Google at the course and have been practising hills. Just not relishing tonights run in the driving rain!

onedev · 24/09/2012 18:17

That's still great Go Grin.

humblebumble · 24/09/2012 18:35

Ha ha golemmings Grin
2 hours still a great time for a 12 mile run! I have my 12 mile run this weekend, although I may do it Friday if I get enough time.

KiwiPanda · 24/09/2012 20:59

I was hobbling today after my 12 miler yesterday. I actually go back to work (from mat leave) the day after my half marathon so it might be an interesting entrance..! "Hi I'm back, can I have a lie down.."?"

Was quite chuffed with my time for the first ten miles though, but clearly it's going to be a massive effort to hold on to that for the final three and a bit.

golemmings · 25/09/2012 21:02

Kiwi, we're living almost parallel lives; I go back the week before mine... But I'm not working Mondays. I was limping enough after 12 miles and I'm still stiff if I sit down for too long!

I should have run tonight but its cold and wet and we have no heating so the idea of going out and having to come back in to a baltic house, shower in a fridge and then have to get out of the shower... urgh. No chance. Maybe tomorrow but we have a child free morning so the plan is some serious deep cleaning and decluttering and then I need to go into work to see if I have a functional computer after 13 months of idleness... At that point I will rather be running!

Shock at kiwi and lemmings combining running and babies - it took me 10 years to start again after my youngest was born Grin

KiwiPanda · 26/09/2012 08:32

golemmings that's funny! How many do you have? I have two of the little buggers angels - that's why I started running actually Neither - I thought "right well that's me done with having babies" so ran out of excuses Wink

Actually in all seriousness I really wish I'd started running properly years ago. This is going to sound incredibly boastful and it's not meant to be, honest! - but I've found something I'm actually quite good at and it makes me wonder how much better I would have been if I'd started earlier! I've gone from 10 min/mile pace in March/April to running 10 miles at 7'35 minute/mile pace in 6 months. If I hadn't had these dratted kids maybe I'd be training with Mo Farah Hmm - ha ha.
/end of boast Blush

Doesn't it make you feel more cheerful though, when you run? I actually really dislike rest days now. Mind you that may be more to do with the fact that I feel on a day of a long run I can eat whatever the hell I want...!

golemmings · 26/09/2012 08:51

Kiwi, I have 2, too. Dd is just 3 and DS is 1 in a couple of weeks (day before the hm Infact). I tried running before but mostly as cross training for marathon paddling. I got to 10k (just after I found I was pg), did a bit of running after that,l and carried on racing kayaks but started running regularly when DS was 6 weeks.
I think I like running as something to tick off but once I get out I feel so much better for it. I'd just like to feel a bit less knqckered... I can't wait for DS to sleep through!

I am seriously impressed with your speed kiwi. That's amazing!

I didnt get out for my run last night. I was due to go to my running club, but the roads have been closed due to the flooding for the past day or so. Im hoping that they will be ok to go again tomorrow night. If not I will run, just around here instead. Or I could just get my cossie out and swim in the field accross the road Grin

My youngest has just turned 1 too. I went to Zumba when she was 3 weeks old, but decided to take up running instead. I tried to take up running in 2010, but didn't get on with it very well. Last year I wanted to, but as I was pregnant and not very fit anyway I thought I had better leave it, but this year the C25K worked wonders and my running club has also helped me really take it up properly. I wish I had taken it up ages ago too. Not because I think I could be a professional, but because I enjoy it so much.

For the last couple of days Ive been stuck in the house due to all the rain and have stuffed myself with chocolate so I really need to get out for a run. When I go to running club not only am I burning off calories, but its keeping me from sitting around at home eating whole chocolate oranges. It has been nice staying all warm, snuggly and cosy in a nice warm house and eating chocolate, but its not doing my body any good.

golemmings · 26/09/2012 19:26

I was playing about on my fitness pal recently and reached the point, through bfing and running that I was 400 cal down for the day and had the choice between crisps and chocolate... It was a fabulous position to be in!

humblebumble · 26/09/2012 20:02

kiwi that is amazing. You have every right to be boastful. 10 miles at a 7'35 pace! Cripes!

onedev · 26/09/2012 20:57

That is a fab pace Kiwi - I'm pleased with being able to run 7 miles at 9 1/2 min mile but any longer than that & I'm up to 10 minute miles!

I started after baby no 2 & really enjoy it as its about the only part of the day that's 'me time'! I stopped when pregnant with baby no 3 but then took it up again when I went back to work as I still enjoy it Grin. He's 16 months now - time just flies by!
