Anyone else training for a half marathon?

golemmings · 23/07/2012 22:25

I graduated from c25k earlier this year and ran my first 10 race in June. A friend has told me that I can do a half marathon in the autumn so I've signed up for one.

I'm a week into the training programme (using the rw one for 2:00-2:15 finishes) and I'm finding it really hard going.

Is there anybody else who is doing a half who wants to share moral support/abuse/highs/lows?

Wow - that's a heck of a story, Tiredemma! Fantastic that you made it to the finish! NeitherShredded, thanks for the reassurance - I feel a bit better now! it did say in the bumf for my race that there was a place to stand for people aiming at 2-3 hrs, so there must be some who'll be at that pace.

onedev · 17/09/2012 21:21

Well done Emma - glad you made it. Grin

Lexi, sounded like a good plan - if I were to do it again I'd need to seriously re-think the logistics as we didn't get home until almost 10pm & it's far too late for my little ones. Id be tempted to do as Emma suggested & go myself without dragging the family along!

I do feel fine today though so think my stretching helped & the constant walking and standing for 4 hours afterwards must have helped (always a bright side Grin)

Humble, you will make it - just believe in yourself.

golemmings · 17/09/2012 21:27

wow Emma what a story. So pleased you finished - and almost at the time you wanted too. Well done.

I'm also running on 7/10. I'm slightly disconcerted that I've had no information about it at all except a receipt for payment. I don't even know exactly where the start is. I mean, Buxton isn't all that big but it's big enough... and the railway line doesn't go all the way to Buxton. well it does, but the bit nearest Buxton still has trains on it which serve the quarries and I'm not running down the tracks with truck loads of limestone coming at me.

Phew. Just did my longest run yet. 10 miles, 2 hours, no problem. Feeling a bit happier about the half marathon now.

humblebumble · 18/09/2012 13:10

holmes it's a nice feeling when you get to 10 miles. You will be able to run the 13.1.

I've just done a gentle 3 mile run in the rain. It felt okay. I start a swim training program tonight which is exciting. I have been looking to do something like this for years. I can swim, but I just want a better technique so I can swim for exercise and keep up with the DC!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 18/09/2012 13:23

Wow Emma that's a story and a half. Well done for finishing.

humble - I was up early today, but could not face going out. But wish I had now I've seen your post.

humblebumble · 18/09/2012 14:16

neither it's supposed to rain all day ... there is still chance to run in the rain ... although you may want to watch for falling trees if you run in the park. It's a bit windy!

KiwiPanda · 20/09/2012 17:42

It's gone all quiet on here.. ! How are the post-racers feeling??

I'm going hill running tonight. I have a feeling this is going to hurt ..

onedev · 20/09/2012 18:18

I went for my first post GNR run on Tuesday evening & felt fine, so was v pleased Grin. Going for a run again tonight with a friend & plan to still take it easy.

Feels strange now though with nothing to train for so need to look for some local events to get involved in!

onedev · 20/09/2012 18:18

Should also say Kiwi, enjoy your hill runs!

Go for it Issy Grin

humblebumble · 21/09/2012 18:29

I have an 11 mile run to do tomorrow morning .

I didn't do a long run last weekend so it feels a bit intimidating! I am inspired by Issy doing a 12 mile run this weekend, so I don't feel I am alone in my training!

This week has been a bit boozy as we have had friends visiting. I am looking forward to a night off tonight and the early start tomorrow.

onedev glad to hear your recovery has been fine. Have you found another run you want to do?

KiwiPanda · 21/09/2012 18:47

humble I'm doing a 10-12 mile run on Sunday (distance dependent on how I feel!) so you are definitely not alone. Alas I also have running club tomorrow morning. Well not alas for club which I love but it's the Cooper Test tomorrow which I hate. Bah. It is not fun.

golemmings · 22/09/2012 09:22

I'm doing 12 miles tomorrow too. Didn't run Tuesday in an attempt to finally get rid of this cold but failed. Ran intervals on Thursday (note very well, half too fast, half too slow- but my mile splits were quite consistent, weirdly.
Going to do something today; not sure what cant be bothered to get out of bed to find my training plan. Had a disturbed night and just expressed for DS and I'm now ready to go back to bed.

Scrub that. Mate rang. Meeting in 10 mins for a run!

I've only run 2 miles this week Shock. I have a really sore shoulder. But inspired by all the other long runs you are all talking about I am going to go and do at least 6 (a lap of the park) once my breakfast has settled, adding on if I feel up to it. DH has already gone to do his.

I'm volunteering at a race tomorrow which should be fun Grin.

humblebumble · 22/09/2012 19:00

I did my 11 miles this morning. Surprisingly it was okay. I felt awful before I started, a bad night with DC2 and the beginnings of the cold that everyone else seems to have.

My average pace was 9.24. Which I was thrilled with all things considered. The hills were okay too, I felt quite strong. Overall, I felt I could have run further although was glad to stop!

My voice sounds a bit croaky now, but hopefully that will come back after a good night's sleep.

Kiwi I hope you managed to get a run in. What's the Cooper Test?
golemmings and neither how did you both get on with your runs?
neither enjoy your volunteering? Which race is it?

LillethTheCat · 22/09/2012 19:19

Hi can I join even though I'm not doing a half marathon till next year? Say no if you like, but it would be good to pick up some tips Grin

I started the C25K in March and a couple of weeks ago I did my first race which was a 10K. I ran it in 1hr 6mins 48secs which I was pleased with. Tomorrow I plan to go 7 miles. I am also in a running club which I love. It's my new social life, I've just swapped the alcohol for running and it's the best thing ever. I wish I took it up years ago

golemmings · 22/09/2012 19:48

Welcome lilllieth! Always good to have more aboard the running train. By the sound of it you're about 3 months behind me!

My run this morning was stunning. Bright, crisp, (ground frost), hot air balloon overhead, and cracking company. I'm still snotty from the cold I've had for 10 days so a slightly slow and slightly shorter run was just lovely this morning with a friend who is just getting into running again.
Nervous about 12mi tomorrow though. I'm just so tired and snotty SY the moment..

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 22/09/2012 21:02

Welcome Lilleth! I'm signed up for another HM next year, so will be glad of your company as it gets closer Smile

Well done humble! I didn't get quite as far as you - I ran about 10 miles - just over according to my garmin - but had a couple of short walks after the 9 mile point. I think my sore shoulder was messing up the rest of my gait.

Volunteering - well Blush is all I can say. DH got back from the park and said "there's a race going on down 5th Avenue". I had only gone and got the day wrong - I was convinced in my head that it was tomorrow, had been telling everyone at work, rearranged plans for tomorrow and all sorts. I rang up and apologised profusely, but I'm not sure if it was at all convincing, or if it sounded like I was trying to cover up for oversleeping. I felt awful for letting them down, as I'm just not the kind of person who wouldn't turn up. The only silver lining is that at least I won't turn up at 7.30 tomorrow to find no race Smile. So as penance, I think I will have to do next weekend which is a 5.30 am start in C Park Shock.

humblebumble · 22/09/2012 22:43

ooops! Blush neither I thought it was weird they were doing another race on Sunday. It was the 1 mile today. I was supposed to do it but I wanted to do a long run instead. I am sure it doesn't matter really, it's not as if they can blacklist you and I am sure you aren't the first to muddle the days. At least you have a nice clear day to relax tomorrow. We are going apple picking!

welcome Lilleth the more the merrier. I think plenty of us will continue to race into the next year. It's quite addictive! Well done on your 10km race.

golemmings your run sounded wonderful (snotty nose aside). Hopefully you will feel okay for your 12 mile tomorrow.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 22/09/2012 23:06

Thanks humble. I still feel bad about not turning up. We're walking the High Line tomorrow (for the second time in three weeks) with visitors.

Good luck for your run tomorrow lemmings!

onedev · 23/09/2012 13:17

That's a pity Neither!

Well done Humble - great pace for such a long distance!

Well done Go - sounds like a good run.

Welcome Lillieth. What half marathon are you doing next year as I'd like another to aim for?

onedev · 23/09/2012 13:18

Also, what's the best way to find which races are on where (in the UK)? I'd like to see a full list of 10ks & HM so I can plan for next year but not sure where to look Confused

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 23/09/2012 13:32

onedev - I googled half marathon calendar 2013 UK and found this
