Theres a new class starting near me and thought about giving it a go... will it help me lose weight?

If you think you might enjoy it, give it a go. Martial arts are great for all aspects of fitness, and potentially might help you address any dietary problems.

I would agree give it a go, will probably be lots of fun. I have been practicing Karate for many many years and that is rubbish for weight loss, but it is basically anaerobic where I think Kick Boxing is more aerobic.

Great for strength and flexability though.

I am a kickboxer, and yes it does help you shift weight (and inches). my upper body/abs are more toned and am definitely more flexible! I guess it's like interval training as you do intensive bursts that really get the heart pumping as opposed to plodding away for hours at the gym?

I love it, good fun, v. empowering and I have graded for 5 belts now Grin

Ooh might give it a go then - any tips what to wear?

I wear t shirt with either 3/4 crops, yoga bottoms or baggy silky kickboxing trousers (we are required to wear kit from our martial arts club), but whatever you are comfy wearing will be fine. is it an actual martial arts club running it or a fitness instructor?

mercibucket · 26/04/2012 20:02

It will get you fitter than pretty much any other sport and you will kick ass, guess weight loss will happen but definitely toning, fitness and strength
I do thaibox but is probably v similar

MooMinCow · 26/04/2012 20:04

merci - is that Muay Thai? do you do any sparring? haven't summoned up the courage for that yet!

Frontpaw · 26/04/2012 20:07

Tis fun. Also very good stress release. Try it out on the kids, they love it!

Frontpaw · 26/04/2012 20:08

I didn't mean kick the kids, let them join a class too!

mercibucket · 26/04/2012 20:50

Pmsl frontpaw - that sounded wrong :-) but yes, kids do love it, get a few pads n gloves for home

Yes, muay thai, moomincow, it's cool, I do light sparring but nothing too heavy, no fights cos I would,kt look v professional with a broken nose!

Mittz does kickboxing and she looks like a Goddess! I'd say yes. Lots of DVDs/classes take inspiration from martial arts, anything that is fun to do is best I think. If you don't even realise that you are exercising and you are enjoying yourself then that has to be a win.
