Just as the title says,my dd 12 wants to take up running which is fine as she can come out with me at weekends and as it gets lighter in the evenings we can go out then too.

I think this has all come about since starting secondary, having access to cakes/crap ect and has started to gain weight, she is still very slim but rather than make a fuss about it I will go along with what she has suggested re the running and just keep up the education with food.

My question is should I just start her off on the couch2 5k plan or is there a specific plan for young girls, anyone with any knowledge of taking a young one out gratefully received.

Hi Quiet - I dont know what the couch2 5K plan is so might be off on the wrong track so to speak Grin but my DD2 started running around the age of 11 - cross country and track with the odd London mini-marathon thrown in - and she was told by her coaches to avoid running/training on surfaced roads so she didnt damage her still developing knees/shins/arches etc

Thanks My,we live in the sticks so have access to lots of tracks and have a huge field out back of us that we can use,she would have to do a little bit of road running to get from one track to the next at times

I might look into a running club for her in time but nearest one is 10miles away

I would suggest the running club - there will be teens her own age, coaches that will encourage her and develop her as they will know how to help her training.

The coach to 5km is aimed at adults so I would be a bit worried whether it was correct training for a developing 12 year old..?
