bonkers I am flogging my Garmin 205 - it's a bit clunky, but does everything you need. Let me know if you're interested (it's only 5 months old - I am replacing it with a model with HRM, not because there's anything wrong with it)

wiifitmama yes definitely add in an easy run, where you gradually add distance - preferably to a bit more than you will be running in march - so work up to 10k, if possible

stickylittlefingers · 04/11/2011 22:32

wiifit that makes total sense to me. Add the mileage slowly (10% at a time) and you'll be happily running longer distances. If you're doing a fast, a hill and an easy, that's a really good training regime.

sciencebint So sorry to hear about your predicament. On the plus side, I have a friend who had an awful knee injury, and the aqua-jogging was great for her (I never saw her do it or anything, just she was always saying about doing it). She's been back fit a year now, and all seems to be well. So I'd second monkey, definitely look into it.

bonkers me too! I have it on the top of my Christmas list...

bonkers20 · 04/11/2011 22:34

OOoooh Rhet How much are you selling for?
Shall I pm you in the morning? Off to bed now.

cestlavie · 04/11/2011 22:38

Poor you science, how frustrating for you. Aquajogging sounds like a good idea though I know nothing about it!

Good luck for this weekend rhet (enjoy the down bit!), fanny and futurity. Wise words as always from Moshi fanny about race planning - hope you get under 1.50.

Right, off to bed, been a long week. Happy running all.

fannybanjo · 04/11/2011 23:04

science oh no, what a nightmare. Sad yes to aqua jogging, if it's good enough for race horses! Dont worry too much about fitness. Each time I've had my girls, I've taken at least a year off and every time I've started running again, I've been fitter. You will get back to your running, as frustrating as it is. Just don't rush it. Your body doesn't totally forget your training. Hope your on your feet again soon.

cest yep, my plan is to take first 8 miles teeny bit slower then depending on how I feel, ramp it up. If I run first 8 at 8.30 (which I've done countless times over past few weeks) and the last 5 at 8.20 then I'm on course.... At GNR I was on form but nerves hit last 5 miles and I slowed. I kicked myself at the finish as I knew I copped out. Hopefully with extra training I've done since, I'm in better condition.

Anyone know what happens re gun times? Don't think this one is chipped so worries that if I get stuck at back, I'll lose time.

fannybanjo · 04/11/2011 23:07

wiifit my "easy" run is my long slow run. It's always done around 1 minute slower per mile than my steady pace. It should probably be 90 secs slower but I find it impossible to do a 10 min mile, it's like a fast walk to me. Can you not fit in more than 2 runs a week? Very hard to train efficiently on 2, even 1 more run which make huge difference.

Wiifitmama · 04/11/2011 23:11

Thanks everyone for the tips. I think I will aim for 3 a week.....fast, easy and hills. I also do Body Pump class twice a week which I am totally addicted to. And I home school my kids so all my training has to be done in the evening once dh gets home or weekends so it's hard to fit anything else in.

MoshiMoshi · 05/11/2011 07:34

fanny - if you aren't chipped and are bothered by recorded time then you will need to push to the front to get a true gun time. Even with chipped times, positions are still determined by gun times.

I had a thought rhet about potty training. One thing I do with DD3 (2) is make going to the loo a fun thing we Di together. She loves feeling like like one of the big girls now going to the loo like DD1 and DD2, so I make it a group thing ("hey, let's go for a wee before we go out!") or, at least, a thing that mummy does with her if I think it's been a few hours and I want to pre-empt an accident eg if we are not at home and I suspect she won't be thinking about it. She is pretty good now but can forget if distracted so when we were in SF I watched the time and took her to a loo or got her to per in the portable potty every few hours. Much less harrowing than accidents happening. I sure you do this too but when she squeezes a few ounces out I also praise her for doing it just like me and being able to go for a wee just like that when she needs to. I hope you feel it is less of a chore soon. Your DD will then feel it less of a demand and more of a skill she can be proud of!

fannybanjo · 05/11/2011 07:53

Moshi thanks. I think it's around 500 in the race so I'm thinking I'd rather be middle of pack so I'm not tearing off like the Hare. I will set my Garmin for when I go over the line though. In my head I'll go with the Garmin time but really, want my official time to be 1.50. Here's hoping! Hope you had a good evening out. Smile

rhet good luck and go kick that hill's arse! Looking forward to seeing how you find it.

Awful night sleep for moi, DD2 was crying out a lot, complaining of a headache. I ended up bringing her in with us. She then woke around 4 times. My head is throbbing with tiredness now. Hope tonight is better.

AngeChica · 05/11/2011 08:15

Good luck all and enjoy your runs this weekend. It feels v odd to be stuck at home on a Saturday morning but still feeling grot here and don't think it would do me any good at all. 2 weeks til my 10k in Suffolk. I have only done the GNR once before I'm afraid I have been a complete couch potato since DS was born - until earlier this year when I contacted a charity about GNR places - they offered me the Great North Swim instead which I did, and now the VLM!

peachsmuggler · 05/11/2011 08:41

Oh science, that's a 'mare, you poor thing.

wiifit, yes you need an easy run in there too, t'is the only way to safely build up your mileage. Good luck!

Rhet, am Shock at DP's sister! Last thing you need.

Fanny, I feel for you! dD slept for 2 hours in pram yesterday after early start and tiring day at swimming and so wouldn't go to sleep at 8. Am sure if we had persevered we could have got her to sleep by about 9, but we were both so tired and trying to eat dinner so she stayed up till 11. I was thinking oh well at least she'll have a lie in. Nope!!! 7am, which is early even for her (damn you clock change!). Grrrrrrrrr. Needless to say I'll be having a lengthy afternoon nap, even though she won't!

Looking forward to hearing from Rhet, about THAT hill!!

Happy running you crazy fools!

rhetorician · 05/11/2011 08:51

moshi thanks - she is doing pretty well, really - if anything she is a bit too good at holding on, and then leaves it too late. But we are averaging one accident a day - usually with some kind of explicable context. I think she is a bit anxious about it, despite our being very laid-back.

Beautiful day here, so the toil up the fuck-off hill will at least be pretty!

LFDT!

see you all later

fannybanjo · 05/11/2011 11:28

LET'S FUCKING DO IT!!!! Come on rhet!!! Grin

fannybanjo · 05/11/2011 11:32

peach can't do naps in our house - DD3 would be still up at 2am. Hopefully you get a nice rest later. My head is throbbing.

Period has come along on cue like a MIL you don't want on Christmas Eve. Exactly the same happened day before GNR. Hmm

MoshiMoshi · 05/11/2011 12:41

lfdt!

ThatVikRinA22 · 05/11/2011 13:28

im more of a ISIBDI.....i suppose id better do it rather than LFDI! morning all....pissing down here, but going to drag myself out in a min for a 5k....Wiifit - im concentrating on building my mileage up first then i will look at my speed - last week i did 5 miles at an average of a 9 min mile, im trying to get to 10k first then my speed should improve as i do - i joined a running club and its pushed me which is great!

not had time to read through (you lot talk so fast!!) but have a good day everyone....im going out in a min to get wet!

peachsmuggler · 05/11/2011 14:06

Hope you don't get too wet vicar!

Fanny, hope the headache goes soon. Will you be able to get a lively early night to prepare for tomorrow? Are you ok on the second day of your period normally? (guess you must be given brilliant performance in GNR!!!)

had 20 minute flop on bed after having a bath with DD and going to try for another (or if not at least resting in bed) in a bit after making chocolate brownies, and before heading put to fireworks.

Rhet, sounds like DD is doing great with her potty. One accident a day is pretty good! Realised this week that our DD has been potty training for a year. She still has accidents!!

DP now finishing work on Wednesday rather than Friday, and I cannot flipping wait!

rhetorician · 05/11/2011 14:41

just because I know you are all dying to know: 1:48! 15k, the first half of it seriously uphill. Beautiful run though - and I didn't come last (quite). More later...off to work now :(

fannybanjo · 05/11/2011 15:16

Woo hoo!!! Brilliant rhet! Are you pleased? Great time, that hill was a motherfucker one!

peachsmuggler · 05/11/2011 15:18

Yayyyy! Rhet, well done mate!!!

Off to work???? Boooooo!

fannybanjo · 05/11/2011 15:26

Can't wait for the full race report later. I've no doubt it's in draft in PowerPoint as we speak...!

monkeywench · 05/11/2011 15:43

Well done rhet that sounds really good, especially uphill! Will look forward to the race report when you've attended to the less important stuff in life than running work.

Easy run for me today, with a friend through the beautiful NT Ashridge Estate. Saw lots and lots of deer prancing around through the fog. This is about the only place round here that has really steep hills, but my friend isn't up to hills so will have to turn out another time for some good hill sessions.

Done my ironing, done supervised two lots of homework, now a quick rest before off to school fireworks - which promises to be a mudbath lots of fun. See you all later!

stickylittlefingers · 05/11/2011 16:03

Wahay Rhet! Sounds like you had a good time, looking forward to hearing more about it.

what is it about you ruddy academics? I realised I wasn't going to be able to park run cos DP had to be at some ridiculous thing today. Crappity crap. But did a longer run on my own in the early morning, so I guess nothing to complain about really, just miss the adult socialising!

Hope Peach and Fanny are both feeling better/more rested.

ThatVikRinA22 · 05/11/2011 16:07

rhet - i looked at your link and nearly fainted! well done (we need an i am still in awe emoticon just for the runners threads!) looking forward to the report

i did an easy 5k today and found it - well, easy! shows how quickly i am improving, i got soaked but actually i found it really liberating running in the rain, you can only get so wet! embarrassed my DD when i got home looking like a drowned rat as she had her friend over...she has hit that age where everything i do is embarrassing though, she is 14!

im narked that i cant go to running club for 3 weeks cos of my shift pattern now, but will carry on with 3 or 4 runs a week until i get back. I think as i found this 5k easy i will push myself a bit more next run and do a bit more distance.Ive asked DH to research Garmins for me....

fanny hope you feel better.

right - better get ready for a night shift....the dreaded 5th november night shift - fun. not. see you all later.

squix · 05/11/2011 16:10

Just a quickie - well donerhet and good luck fanny and futurity.
