ps. it is a bit boring and frustrating, mind you

fannybanjo · 03/11/2011 20:33

Oh bless you, rhet if you could scan it, that would be super, smashing, greatttt! I know for a fact, that if I had a HRM, I'd bore DH rigid with my heart rates. I've just been sat at kitchen table with calculator working out paces for Sunday. He was trying to have a conversation and my eyes were glazed over! I kind of like to go by how I feel, as that changes weekly. However heart rate no doubt takes into account if you're tired so no doubt, I'd probably benefit from having one.... Wink

rhetorician · 03/11/2011 20:47

a good fast runner who could be even faster :o

rhetorician · 03/11/2011 20:48

will scan it, but not till Monday - easier to do at work

fannybanjo · 03/11/2011 21:00

rhet I am on the computer now so looked at your link re elevation for race. My fiercest run is (going by hats rule of feet per mile) is 208 ft per mile (1366 ft elevation in 6.56 mile run) However, mine is slightly easier than your race as it is a mix of about 6 hills. Yours is one big FUCK off hill! However, if you pace yourself well and jog it, once you are at the top, it is practically downhill all the way to the finish, you are going to have a lot of LETS FUCKING DO IT moments. You can do it though, just take it easy, DO NOT worry about time. That is a good mental race for you.

fannybanjo · 03/11/2011 21:02

Like your description of my running ability!

rhetorician · 03/11/2011 21:16

yeah, I think it'll be alright, although i don't regularly run big long hills - but once I get up, then yes, it's downhill all the way. My only aim is to run the whole thing, really. I hope the weather is OK, otherwise it will be all too reminiscent of the Half Marathon of Indefinite Duration back in May

fannybanjo · 03/11/2011 21:28

What happened in HM in May...?

I've found elevation for my HM - it's only 232ft!!!! So, theoretically Hmm, I should be able to welly it BUT I'm well aware that, wellying it probably will turn into burning out and plodding last 3 miles... Bastard races, why do we do it to ourselves, I turn into a racing werewolf.

futurity · 03/11/2011 21:29

monkey it's a new run so I don't think there will be much support as it is by the new guided bus route and then round the science park..hardly busy on a Sunday morning! Saying that it's only 10k so won't be plodding for too long (hopefully!)

AngeChica · 03/11/2011 21:34

Oh this thread is so busy! Slight training hiccup this week bad sinusitis = have only done 1 treadmill run. :( and only 2 weeks til my 10k. I see getting ill becoming a big fear before the big event. One of my fellow BTUK fundraisers won this today - how cool is that! I could so do with 600 quid of new kit Envy

2 quick q's 1. anyone here in the NE? and also 2. has anyone ever experienced what I can only describe as an "attack of the shits" while running, that they think was caused by running? and what can you do to avoid it? This happened to me on a long run recently. I got to 10k then doubled over with tummy cramps I had to duck into 2 loos on the way I then thought I was going to get caught short ... I even grabbed some leaves, was about to duck into a bush and realised I was running right past a travellers camp and lots of little kids were looking at me so I had to waddle home instead. Blush I normally don't have any stomach probs.

rhetorician · 03/11/2011 21:51

fanny - torrential rain, driving winds, mountains, very rocky and rough underfoot = one cold, miserable, pissed off runner with a sucky time..

angechica runner's trots are a common malady, much discussed on this thread - avoiding caffeine seems to be one solution. Others will sympathise; this does happen to me sometimes, but usually only when running faster paces

stickylittlefingers · 03/11/2011 21:55

angechica you're in the right place for loooong discussions of runner's tummy. I have learnt new terminology (gingerbread man, turtle poking its head out) and that pretty much everyone gets it some time or other (very reassuring!)

And yep, I'm in Durham.

stickylittlefingers · 03/11/2011 21:57

Sinusitis sounds horrible, is that something you get a lot? :( and Envy of your friend's win!

futurity · 03/11/2011 22:08

ange happens to me after most races...still trying to work out why as its not pleasant!

AngeChica · 03/11/2011 22:19

sticky I'm in SE Northumberland. Yeh I tend to get a couple of infections every winter, won't decribe the grot that comes out of my sinuses as it's gross! I'm not alone then in the dropped guts dept :). Phew!

stickylittlefingers · 03/11/2011 22:41

not quite the 10 minutes apart of monkey and cherry, but we might see each other at something... Do you do the GNR every year?

does the running help at all if you have a tendency to get sinusitis? I ask because even when I don't think I have a cold at all, as soon as I get out running I seem to turn into a snot factory (what with that and the exploding arse, it's just as well I choose out of the way routes Blush. Delightful!) But I think it's good I get it all out my system, maybe I get fewer colds because of it.

ibbydibby · 03/11/2011 22:41

Crikey all this talk of hills....not many of those in my neck of the woods (Norfolk).

Sorry about tummy probs Ange

Feeling better after yesterday's trauma, thanks for kind words. Went training with the club tonight. We did a complicated (it seemed to me) session, consisting of warm up lap, followed by few warm up exercises (heel flicks, strides etc). Then a 10 minute tempo run, then pyramids: 1 minute 5k pace run, 45 secs rest, 2 min run, 45 rest, 3 min run, 1 min rest. Then the same in reverse (ie 3, 2 1). After that, 1 minute flat out run with 50 secs rest, 1 minute run 40 secs rest, 1 minute run 30 secs etc, down to only 10 seconds rest before the final 1 minute flat out. Phew. Realised that I don't often post details of my runs on here, as when out on my own I just do a LSR. Bit lazy I know but have come to rely on the club for the more technical stuff.

Still attempting to prove the formula that was struggling with when I posted last night. Blush

Still on a mathematical note, DS2 (nearly 11) has gone to bed trying to calculate in his head the square root of 2...

monkeywench · 03/11/2011 22:42

ange I get cramps unless I avoid alcohol, wheat, and high fibre foods in the couple of days before a long run. Dehydration can also make it worse.

stickylittlefingers · 03/11/2011 22:45

ibby that does sound complicated (the running session, rather than the formula - which would be utterly beyond me). That must be the huge advantage of joining a running club.

monkeywench · 03/11/2011 22:45

Oh and sympathies with sinusitis, I had it just before the marathon and my face was so painful. I found the sudafed spray very good (not the tablets though).

DebiTheScot · 03/11/2011 23:00

What's the formula ibby? What do you do? I'm a physics teacher although I don't remember much of the complicated stuff anymore!

I can't work out what causes my stomach cramps, or my lack of bladder control, or my nerve pains in my pelvis/bum/top of thigh. I do usually only get one at a time though Grin

ibbydibby · 03/11/2011 23:48

Debi I was trying to prove how the formula for a standard deviation for grouped data can be written in a different format. Hmm. Am a distance learning tutor in statistics. Have just done it though - after hours of trying to figure it out myself, and trawling through t'internet, I finally found it in an ancient (1951) textbook.

Sticky, yes sessions like that are a huge advantage of joining a running club. In fact I did not realise that sessions like this existed until I joined the running club Blush. When I ran the London Marathon in 2007 (my only marathon) my training consisted of just LSRs...Another advantage of the running club is running with other people.

Was thinking tonight about what I think about when running with them...I often marvel at how peoples' running gaits differ so much. Sometimes I can identify someone who is running behind me, just by hearing the way their feet fall (or by the way they are huffing and puffing - some more than others). No shouts of LFDI though!

Ange sorry about sinusitis - have never (touch wood) had a full blown attack, sounds very painful.

Still no email about Olympic Park run for either DH or I....

bonkers20 · 04/11/2011 09:44

I emailed the Olympic Run people and got a reply (from a real person...I am shocked!),

It says:

"I have checked for you and unfortunately you were unsuccessful in the ballot."

I'm so sad. I didn't get tickets in the first or second round of ticketing and now this. I know it's just a money making exercise but I can't help feeling angry and upset knowing rich sods who just happen to work for sponsor companies will be getting loads of free tickets when they don't really care about the sport itself. There'll probably be empty seats in the stadium because they can't be bothered to turn up.

[bitter]

futurity · 04/11/2011 10:06

I know what you mean Bonkers ...hopefully though the Olympic run will be full of nice genuine runners who will appreciate the opportunity to run there. People who apply for the VLM for a laugh and then get in and then don't bother to do it wind me up...I figure this sort of ballot wouldn't have been entered by those type of people so all the places will have gone to genuine runners who will turn up whether rain or shine. Still Envy though of those who got in!
