all welcome to come and join in - we talk a lot on here, and are always glad of new people to natter with about running (and everything else)

OP posts:
June2009 · 30/09/2011 21:19

Last week was quite hot already for September, I really wished I had shorts instead of running shorts on (you know the legging type that stops just underneath the knee).

Good luck guys! Enjoy the races!

fannybanjo · 30/09/2011 21:39

paws so glad you've decided to do Chester - you'll be fine I'm sure and you never know, you may surprise yourself... Wink hope you are feeling loads better?

Quenelle Congratulations!! Are you planning on continuing running through your pregnancy?

DrNo respect on running in this heat! It's too hot to walk in never mind run!

June yes you certainly deserved the gold medal for your race with gym ball! Where you using it like a Space Hopper!? Grin

Debi shin splints need total rest I'm afraid Sad otherwise you could do permanent damage. Ice and rest. I find running on grass helped mine when I first started running and suffered with them. Have you upped your mileage more?

Two hour run planned for 6.30am with friend and need to beat 12.85 miles we did last week however it's a VERY hilly course so we'll see. Feeling loads better today. Smile. DH 40 on Monday so busy few days of entertaining/going out.

fannybanjo · 30/09/2011 21:41

peach is DD still up?! Grin

DebiTheScot · 30/09/2011 22:12

The link works for me possum. Cheers.

Fanny I'm sticking my fingers in my ears, you didn't say that. Don't know if I should race on Sunday. At least the duathlon in 3 weeks is only 5k runs (2 of them) so I probably could do very little running and still do ok in it.
I have upped my mileage but not by much. I think both times this has happened has been when I've added a 4th run to the week and started doing intervals. So is it the intervals or the 4th run??? And is this going to cause problems when I want to train for a hm???

fannybanjo · 30/09/2011 22:17

I'd hazard a guess that the faster intervals has caused it. However they may just be sore from the extra speed you've done but I find its my thighs that suffer after doing speed work - not shins. Are they sore to touch now? Unfortunately I'd be dubious about racing as it will most definitely make them worse. Shin splints huge pain in the arse Sad

fannybanjo · 30/09/2011 22:18

Speed work main cause of minor injuries I find - strained groin etc. Be careful - did you warm up really well and not go too fast on the intervals?

fannybanjo · 30/09/2011 22:20

On another note I'm considering the Edinburgh Marathon next year (as long as places left) Anyone any experience of it?

peachsmuggler · 30/09/2011 22:26

fanny, she was in bed by 9! Which is only an hour later than normal. She was up for a wee, 30 mins ago so maybe hadn't been asleep yet, but hey, as long as she not shouting to get up I'm cool with that!!! Surely she will have a nice long lie in tomorrow (my weekend day to get up!). God, am mighty impressed by your 6.30 run. Good time to avoid the heat!

Debi, sorry about the shin splints, am afraid I haven't got any experience or advice Sad

well done bumply, hope you enjoy the rave Grin

DrNo, am amazed you didn't melt lady! Nice one!

peachsmuggler · 30/09/2011 22:29

Ooh great idea fanny, that's the one I want to do, when I eventually do one! Supposed to be downhill/flat. Do it do it do it!!!!

DrNortherner · 30/09/2011 22:45

Thanks backward links work for me, I'm going to use the 10k PB one.

debi that does sound like shin splints I'm afraid, I have suffered in the past with them and they are bloomin painful. Are they tender to touch also? You really need to stop running to let them heal as fanny says, and start beck gently. If you don't want to stop then cut back mileage (which I suspect you don't....), run on grass if poss and apply RICE.
A really good stretch for shins is kneel and drop your bum onto your heels IYSWIM? So you shins get a good stretch into the ground.

fanny glad you are back on form girl, 6.30am for a run? Shock Too early for me that. I am doing my 8 miles at 10am Smile

fannybanjo · 30/09/2011 22:51

peach I know! However I think it may still be hard.... WinkGrin. 26 miles lying on a boat would do me in, trying to contemplate running non-stop for approx 4 hours! Also it's £50 and I've spent mega dough today on DH for his birthday so can't justify it this weekend. Will wait until Monday and see if a little fairy put some money into my bank account. Hmm 9pm positively miraculous for such a late nap, not too bad hey?! Hope you are feeling well.

Very proud of DD1 today - first time doing cross country and poor thing was exhausted as it was 30 degree heat here. She was out like a light tonight and I'm chuffed as she seemed to really enjoy it. Theres a race next Saturday so I'll be there - cheering her on coaching Grin

fannybanjo · 30/09/2011 22:53

DrNo alarms on for 5.55.... I'm gonna be wrecked by tomorrow night and we're going for a meal to celebrate DH's birthday.

DrNortherner · 30/09/2011 23:02

I'd be useless running at that time. Useless. I need copious cups of tea and some brekkie before I can even think about running.

Good night all.

backwardpossom · 30/09/2011 23:07

fanny I did the half marathon in Edinburgh this year, which is basically along the marathon route, but you turn sooner. I liked the route, but it's not around Edinburgh - you start near Holyrood Park and run out to Portobello and along the coast, so you don't see much of Edinburgh at all. It's very flat and is a fast course. I really enjoyed the half, but the finish was a shambles. The organisers have promised to sort it out for this year though. If I were looking for a marathon to do, I'd do the Edinburgh one. I'm hoping to get a BFP before then though, so not going to enter this year...

orangehead · 30/09/2011 23:17

Aw thats sweets about your boys paws.
Congratulations again Quenelle. How you doing?
well done bumply on the pb.
Debi I often find speed work can set off my shins. I agree rest is the best thing but thats easy said than done when you have a race planned. I usually use the crosstrainer at gym when mine get bad to give them a break.
Glad your feeling better Fanny.
Had a bit of sort out of magazines in waiting room at work today came across a few Triathlon magazines and thought of you guys. If anyone wants them I am happy to post them to you. If not I will just recylce.
Not sure if to do parkrun tomorrow, tummy been a bit dodgy. Together with that and its going to be hot, might just see how I feel in the morning.
Good luck to all the racers this weekend.

squix · 30/09/2011 23:34

fanny I did the Edinburgh half too this year. I think some one on here did the full (mrswednesday??).

Like backwardpossum said it's a flat/down hill course that goes out of Edinburgh and doesn't come back in again. Finish is in Musselburgh about 10 miles from the city centre - this years route will probably be on the website. The atmosphere for the half was brilliant - loads of support and being a flat route, a good chance of a PB. I really enjoyed it - apart from the end and I think there were so many complaints that will have to change next year. I will probably do the 1/2 next year.

If you are thinking of doing it and get a place (pretty sure it's first come first served, no ballot and you don't have to have a charity place) if you need accommodation, I'd book it quickly to get the best deal - cheap hotels get booked up v. quickly - if you have any questions on where to book - happy to help ( I live just outside Edinburgh and know it well). The race was quite pricey (£60 for the marathon i think) but the t shirt at the end was v good and they did include safety pins Smile

quenelle congratulations - hope you feel better soon.

backwardpossom · 30/09/2011 23:51

Nice chunky medal too, squix Grin Proper weapon.

rhetorician · 01/10/2011 00:27

ooh, so not only 2 imminent thread babies (me/DP and peach); plus one on board (quenelle) and 2 trying (orange and backward); I have a feeling there's someone else ttc as well. How exciting!

just been out for dinner and several a couple of pints, so necking water in the hope of being able to drag arse out in pissing rain sometime tomorrow

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 01/10/2011 06:11

Thanks squix and possum - how come the finish was so bad?

DrNo hardcore me! I am eating porridge with grated apple and then I am hopping in my car and driving to my friends in 5 mins. I think I have officially lost the plot!

fannybanjo · 01/10/2011 08:43

Good lord there were people actually just coming in from night out!

Time on feet run 13.35miles in 2 hours. Pleased with that as same route as last Sunday etc but ran 0.6 miles more today. Smile. I'm going to be shattered later. Hope DH doesn't want a birthday shag Grin. It's not his birthday until Monday but birthday weekend starts today... Hmm

Themasterandmargaritas · 01/10/2011 09:25

What is it with men and birthday shags? Grin

Also just back from 2 hours LSR about 18k which is pretty crap for me but in my defence it is later than I normally go and so v sunny AND yesterday I played 4 games of water polo, 3 x3 legged races and 6 lots of tug of war followed by a party for our work team building day, so I probably wasn't on my finest form today.

Good luck to all those racing and welcome back moshi. I'm on the iPhone so will read through all the other posts later to catch up properly.

peachsmuggler · 01/10/2011 09:25

fanny, can't believe you have already done a half marathon this morning!!! Great time too. After DD's late bedtime she, thankfully, slept in till 9. Hurrah! I was awake from 7.30 but read my book. It's The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. Anyone read it? Am loving it!

peachsmuggler · 01/10/2011 09:31

Good work Master, I don't know where you get the energy!!!

Am at that stage of finding the physical exertion of getting out the bed, a problem and keep dreaming about springing out the front door on a lovely run. Of course it will be tiring having a little baby, especially if she refuses to sleep like DD, but it's a different kind of tiredness. This utter physical exhaustion is starting to get to me!

peachsmuggler · 01/10/2011 09:34

fanny, tell DH he can have 2 on Monday if ge leaves you alone to recover today Grin

backwardpossom · 01/10/2011 10:42

fanny the finish used to be in Musselburgh Racecourse, but this year it was just on the main street and they didn't let spectators in to see the finish. So you went from crowds at about 400m from the end cheering you on, to nobody cheering you on at the finish. Then when you crossed the line, there was nobody telling you where to go and the signs were hopeless. You had to walk around the corner, where you got your goody bag (which was quite good, in fairness) and then carried on a bit more to get your tshirt (I got handed the wrong one and ended up with a generic EMF tshirt rather than one that said EMF Half marathon finisher 2011, which I'm quite gutted about - and this happened to rather a lot of people going by the facebook page). There was supposed to be a big screen set up in the park so that your friends/family could watch you finish, but it wasn't working so they were showing MTV or something on it instead. It was just a disorganised mess - hope they sort it out this year! It didn't put me off the race though, I loved every second of it.
