all welcome to come and join in - we talk a lot on here, and are always glad of new people to natter with about running (and everything else)

rhetorician · 29/09/2011 21:25

how do you run 7 m/m in daylight?

OP posts:
futurity · 29/09/2011 21:29

That 24 hour thing looks very hardcore...and that's just the camping (I'm not a keen camper!)

Have stopped sulking about marathon place...at least I know I will either get in 2013 or in 2014 which is the year of the big 40 for me. Would still like to get something different in the calendar for next year...don't think it will be a marathon though.

DrNortherner · 29/09/2011 21:30

Grin Good question Rhet!

peachsmuggler · 29/09/2011 21:32

I think running for an hour, every 5 hours for a day is totally do-able. We wouldn't win any prizes, but just to do it would be brilliant fun. There would be zero sleep, but the adrenalin would keep us awake enough!!!

rhetorician · 29/09/2011 21:58

well peach we could always bring our tiny dd2s which would surely help to keep everyone awake? I think it's doable too

trouble is, I am having a hard time with the idea of staying awake for 24 hours without liquor, a child or a deadline...

OP posts:
Hatwoman · 29/09/2011 22:02

I also decided that I wanted to do a marathon before 40. It just seemed like something you ought to do. I failed to get a ballot place my first try (aged 37) so went for a charity place when I was 38. really glad I did it - it sealed the whole running thing for me - unlike every otegr time I've done a race I've kept it up reasonably consistently since (41 now). just looking for my next challenge

tulip27 · 29/09/2011 22:09

debithescot - I am also in Hampshire- now this Camberly 10k, must aa route planner and see how far away it is.

Sorry to hear about all of you who didn't get your marathon places. You all sound so fit and fast aswell its prob for the best you didn't get places, you would have left the others in your dust Wink

Anyone up for interval training tomorrow? its only going to be 24 degrees here !!

DebiTheScot · 29/09/2011 22:16

16 laps from one person!!!
31 laps does seem a bit many! I can't imagine doing one 10k at that speed, never mind 5! And it seems a bit illogical that we can add men and not have to do so much.

DrNortherner · 29/09/2011 22:18

Well it seems we could get a team together. The first MN meet up at an ultra running event Smile

backwardpossom · 29/09/2011 22:42

Have you seen this?

Shock

Bloody disgraceful!

DrNortherner · 30/09/2011 07:39

Yes I am livid Just started a thread on feminist board to see what they think. Seriously, I am appalled.

Pawsnclaws · 30/09/2011 10:01

That's ridiculous - are they serious?! As someone in that article says it's her legs that did it!

It's not that long ago that women weren't even allowed to run marathons because it might interfere with their reproductive abilities. I'm on my phone so I can't link, but there is a great image of the woman who ran the Boston Marathon in the 60s disguised as a man - the picture is of the race organiser trying to push her off the course, and her boyfriend is rugby tackling him to the ground!

DrNortherner · 30/09/2011 10:11

picture here Can't believe this was only in the 60's Shock

peachsmuggler · 30/09/2011 10:15

It is utter madness. PR must be spitting chips! So basically it's ok for the male runners to benefit from the pacers (who happen to be men) but not ok for the women????

As others have said, she is the one who has set the secord, her talent, and training, and dedication. They may as well say "Oh it doesn't count because her trainer is a man, or her shoes were designed by a man"

Surely we will see less exciting mixed marathons as the women who are are the lead will not be pushing for that few extra seconds to get a WR.

Utter rubbish.

FairyBasslet · 30/09/2011 10:43

I saw this a few days ago through a Runners World update on Facebook. An utter disgrace in these supposedly enlightened times. She's a woman, she ran the race in that time. She did it under her own steam, there just happened to be men running in the same race - what the hell is the problem with that? It's not like they picked her up and carried her. I don't normally get wound up by this sort of stuff, but this is just rubbish.

rhetorician · 30/09/2011 11:05

not to detract from the serious issues arising in this ridiculous ruling (equality law, anyone?) I do want to say that Katrine Switzer looks fecking amazing for 60! what better ad for running, eh? Wonder if she writes as well as she looks!

I';d never seen that photo, either Dr No, what a fascinating bit of history.

Nice solid 11kms for me this morning - should have been LSR but woke before 5 and didn't go back to sleep. Am about to sort out DD's festering piles of crap old toys and generally clean up...yawn

OP posts:
Pawsnclaws · 30/09/2011 11:24

Morning all, how are we feeling?

No run for me today, I've got my last LSR tomorrow (8 miles). I'm doing Chester next Sunday - I have to be honest and say I'm not 100% and I'm not nearly as prepared as I hoped I would be but I committed to doing it with a friend and I really don't want to let her down.

The downside is that she is a much, much faster runner than me and so it's a bit of a balancing act - would she prefer to go it alone and get a good time, or have me plodding breathlessly running steadily with her? She has said she's fine with the slow and steady, but I've already said if she wants to "go" on the day she mustn't feel held back.

Off to watch ds1's friendly football match this afternoon then a night out tonight - not drinking though, well maybe half a glass but am driving anyway.

Shameless brag here .... so proud of ds1 and ds2 this morning. School is having a Macmillan Coffee Morning and they were allowed to take in £1 to buy a cake and any extra they wanted as a donation. They both emptied their moneyboxes for a donation without hesitation and ds1 said he really wanted the money to help people with cancer. Honestly - I wibbled a bit emotionally and had to pretend to have something in my eye Hmm. Having said that, there's every chance they will use their £1 to buy back the scones and flapjacks we made last night .........

Well Super Sunday looks like Super Sweaty Sunday. Good luck all!

June2009 · 30/09/2011 12:27

sorry had forgotten to put my name with the race...

paws aww that's so sweet. How old are they? I was wondering when I could pack up some toys with dd (2.3y) to give to charity and if she would get the concept. I do this fairly regularly with clothes/stuff so she can see the bags sitting in the hallway but has never questionned it.

yes, wow, this weekend's races are going to be hot, good luck guys! I'm taking a cap & sunglasses/suncream with me the weekend after if this carries on.

Absolutely outraged at that bullshit about the world records.
Yesterday we had a race (with gymballs, you gotta love my instructor for the originality factor :))
I won it on the way in, a guy won it on the way back. Should I say that it is thanks to me that he won it cause I was faster? (in any case he got disqualified for some blatant cheating at the end Grin so I won both ways in the end Grin and I certainly didn't win because of him. I'll take full credit thank you very much.

Very interested in running with you somehow, can't go back or will loose my post so will have a look, am in London so south is a possibility.

Quenelle · 30/09/2011 12:27

Hi everyone. I haven't been near the running thread for a few weeks, since I got my BFP and have since been too nauseous and knackered to do anything let alone run Envy.

Just came on to say good luck to Futurity in the Standalone 10k on Sunday. It's a great couse, usually PBable but perhaps not in tropical temperatures. I hope it doesn't get too hot too early for you.

Good luck also to everyone else racing this weekend.

futurity · 30/09/2011 12:31

Quenelle thanks for that...just wondered why your name had been removed...congrats on the BFP...although feeling yuk is not good (especially in this weather).

I was going to go for a PB but now not sure...depends how hot it is by 9.30! Would never of imagined when I booked it all those months ago that it would be 28 degrees on the 2nd October...crazy!

rhetorician · 30/09/2011 12:44

congratulations quenelle - ooh, exciting, another thread baby...

OP posts:
Quenelle · 30/09/2011 12:55

Thanks both. I will be back. I have hopes of going out for a few plod/walks when the sickness subsides.

We want to get past the 12 week/nuchal scan stage before we tell RL friends and start getting excited.

Futurity, whenever I drive up the part of the A507 that goes past Stotfold I think of how it feels to run it. It is the hardest part of the route. But once you round the corner towards Fairfield Park you're past the worst, and once you round the corner into Wilbury Road it's a downhill sprint Smile. I will be thinking of you.

futurity · 30/09/2011 13:00

sprint finish potential? Cool! Just looking at the map and I think the hard part you mention is at 5K? I've never run round that area before...I know parts of the course from when I used to work in Letchworth so will be fun (hopefully) to run it!
