Rhet you got me thinking about a race this Sunday, we should, lets make it a MN Super Sunday!

Had a look and there is a race that I could get to, but it's cross country and it's a ten miler. Am not really up to that distance, long runs tend to be about 8......what do you think?

squix · 28/09/2011 19:52

DrNorthener - yeay - go for it! A race with no expectations - just for the fun of it and running thread community spirit Smile

rhetorician · 28/09/2011 19:59

bah, can't seem to find anything - all either too far away (Galway, Sligo, Kilkenny) or simply too far - Athlone 3/4 marathon (um, I don't think so...). Will keep looking.

Dr No I think if you approach that run in the spirit of simply wanting to finish and enjoy it you'll be fine :)

Hmm. Need to chat with dh about logistics. He needs car to take ds to football match but he might be able to arrange a lift. Watch this space.

rhetorician · 28/09/2011 20:02

or I could just show up at the AAI cross country championships and plod along in the slip-stream (or join the children?)

Bumply · 28/09/2011 20:27

Got my race pack for my 5k on Sunday. My first ever race.

I normally run with my iPhone and headphones using ismoothrun app as I like it telling me what pace I'm doing or which heart rate zone I'm in. Didn't realise some races don't allow headphones. Wear my iPhone in a belt so it's not always easy to view while running (due to wobbly tum)

Colleague at work is doing the 10k said I should do both! Ha. Not quite ready for that yet.

June2009 · 28/09/2011 20:31

has anyone here done the urbanathlon in manchester? I'm thinking of doing the one in london next year...(looks like easter 2012 on their site, no more details than that though.)

Legs good today.

fanny what is your diet like? I havent been feeling like eating since HM but forced myself to have balanced meals and extra protein. still feeling on a high right now though it's not been long! take care of yourself.

tulip27 · 28/09/2011 20:34

Hello everyone. I managed to get my old lady legs (following sundays HM) to run 6 miles again today and my aches and pains are cured. A brufen beforehand and the stiffness went at mile 1 and has not yet returned.
so, feeling brave and missing not having a race to work towards..... I have booked the reading half. Anyone else want to join me????

Go on, you know you want to Wink

tulip27 · 28/09/2011 20:35

PS where are all the southern runners? Am I the only one?

Wiifitmama · 28/09/2011 20:47

I got my run pack today! Well, that is being generous in describing it that way. Basically it is a number, 4 safety pins and a tiny leaflet of info. Is this normal? Also, my number is in the 3000's! This has sent me into a panic as it is only a fun run in a park. How n earth does one get a good running time with that many people to get off the start line? The info says they encourage walkers towrds the back, but that is it. and queues for the toilets??? How bad will they be with so many runners???

rhetorician · 28/09/2011 20:51

wifitmama yes, totally normal - you get the goodies at the end of the race...the race number doesn't necessarily tell you the number in the race - I had one in the 9000s once, but there were only about 1000 there. Get there in good time to allow for queues. Also, even quite big starts thin out pretty quickly ime - and actually it's nicer to have some company than to be barely able to see the runner ahead of you in the distance - it's easy to get dispirited.

You'll be fine: can't find a suitable race for sunday, so will 'race' against my Garmin in the beautiful weather on sunday - if it lasts that long

Bumply · 28/09/2011 21:07

I'm number 510 for my 5k which I figured is quite likely to be close to the number of entrants as it's a new race length for the bupa event and I was a late entry.

Unless I've missed them int envelope I didn't get safety pins to attachy number. I'll have to buy some as I can't lay my hands on any in the house.

Hoping the hints of coming down with my sons cold don't follow up with a cold/flu.

rhetorician · 28/09/2011 21:16

bupa events never send safety pins Angry grrr

DebiTheScot · 28/09/2011 21:22

tulip where are you? I'm in NE Hampshire (very close to where the 10k I'm doing on Sunday)

Didn't run today so will go out tomorrow. Made a lemon & poppyseed cake instead.

runnerstipple · 28/09/2011 22:01

Well done tulip, I haven't yet braved a run after Sunday's HM. I can at least go downstairs without wincing today though! I'll try and get out tomorrow - its a case of the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak at the moment Grin. I have started looking for a new race to keep me on track, and definitely want to do the Cambridge Half, but that's not until March. Can anyone recommend good sites for finding out what is going on locally as I'm new to this racing malarkey.

CurrySpice · 28/09/2011 22:30

Hello ladies.

What very pleasant running weather this evening! Just a 3miler for me but it's all part of my building-up-slowly-plan :)

I find racing really tricky as ex works every weekend and I have the kids (family a long way away)

This weekend will be the first time in 6 years that I haven't done the Southend 10k Classic this year. Lovely flat course, great for PBs :o

Last year I did it with the worst hangover I've ever had (I only went out for a quick diet coke to see a band, got in at 1:30am steaming drunk Blush) and was crying on the start line!!

squix · 28/09/2011 23:03

runnerstiple - try the runners world website - they have an event search facility.

rhet race against the Garmin whilst thinking about the rest of us sounds fine. We can pioneer virtual racing

bumply no pins in my pack for the GER either. If you're getting bitten by the running bug - it's worth investing in a packet for all the rest of the races you'll be doing. Smile

backwardpossom · 28/09/2011 23:09

I have hundreds of the damn things from all the wee local races I do where they hand them out like sweeties! Handy though Grin

June2009 · 28/09/2011 23:21

If you have a look in the local supermarket, there'll be "running" magazines with lots of events somewhere in there. Also "men's fitness" has events advertised. Runkeeper website has a list of events too, went on there today and found out about a local 10K which is the day after a very rare big night out with dh...and now I'm tempted, just for fun...
You guys are terrible, I wasn't even considering it before I started this message!!!

Themasterandmargaritas · 29/09/2011 05:16

Envy at super Sunday events. Rhet I'll race with you against the iPod.

I'm chortling at your heat talk. A heatwave in England is like our daily temps! For those running in the heat may o suggest a very lightweight hat, lots of water to drink and to pour over yourself while running. Smile

rhetorician · 29/09/2011 09:25

nice sunny day here, going to take dd to the beach; she is unbelievably excited :) leapt around shouting 'hooray', bless

have concluded that the issue with her and potty training is a matter of will, not ability (she is very stubborn); at least once she decides it won't take long

OP posts:
ibbydibby · 29/09/2011 09:27

wiifit lucky to get a race pack these days - for the race I did on Sunday, and for the 2 I have signed up for in October, you collect stuff on the day. Thereby adding to the stress. I do like to get my number pinned on nice and neat, well in advance. Not in a rush just before I run. Runnerstiple yes, agree with Squix that runners world website is good source of forthcoming races/events, because you can post events there for free. You can select the distance/part of the country etc that you are interested in. Re the iron debate, someone at running club was saying earlier this week that their GP had suggested that runners tend to have lower iron levels. If you are taking iron, you need to have Vit C also for the iron to be absorbed into the body. And tea hinders the absorption of iron (apparently), so not a good idea to wash down iron tablet with a good old cuppa. Run yesterday was ok but hot. My Garmin battery was running low so turned it off as did not want to risk battery going completely dead. Did 7 miles or so, maybe a bit more. Scorching hot though. Happy Running

futurity · 29/09/2011 10:33

Just got my marathon rejection magazine. That's my fourth one Sad

peachsmuggler · 29/09/2011 10:51

Sad Futurity. Would you think of going for another marathon in the meantime? One that doesn't have a ballot?

Sounds lovely Rhet. I also have a stubborn mule DD, so can sympathise. Sm sure she will let you know when she's ready and it will probably be a breeze, as is on her terms.

After taking DD into town yesterday without she then proceeded to walk the whole way to playgroup, part of it running a race with ond of the boys on his scooter! It's only a 15 minute walk, but that's long for her. We were late and they were all out in garden so she ran straight out there and I didn't even get a goodbye!!

This heat is just crazy , and it's almost October people!! Stay cool and hydrated out there lovely runners!

futurity · 29/09/2011 11:31

don't know Peach ...just had a look on Runners world to see what is about and there is actually a new one in Milton Keynes next April and the route does seem surprisingly scenic as well as flat so that is an option. I just need to consider whether I want to do a marathon THAT much or whether I stay at half's and look into triathlons a bit more.
