Morning ladies - sorry been absent lately - just feel bloody drained Sad - have zero energy, I have a feeling I could be slightly anaemic but don't want to start iron tablets unless I know 100%. Going to do shortish run later to try to perk myself up.

Welcome pop and curry! pop how great that you live in Canada yet can discuss running with Scots, Scousers and Cockneys....!!! I too love winter running however minus 20...Blush. I ran in minus 10 last year and loved it but it does take it's toll on your lungs.

curry if 5k suits you then don't worry - this time last year I was only running 3 x 5k on treadmill, now I'm doing 13-14 miles so just shows you if you did want to go further, you can!

Welcome also runnerstipple! well done on your half! Great time! You got the racing bug now?

thecoo · 27/09/2011 09:35

Still not managing to keep up with you lot, but popping in now and then to see how you're doing. Even more new members since last time - welcome!

I'm going to run the Manuden 10k on Sunday - whenever I sign up for races in advance I seem to jinx myself and get injured so this one was a last minute decision to outwit fate Wink. Will be running with some other girls I know so should be fun.

Also, the best news! I have finally ordered a Garmin - woohoo!!! I got some Amazon vouchers for my birthday a while back and together with others I've been saving up I could finally get one. I've gone for the Forerunner 305 with heart rate monitor. Can't wait until it arrives now...

encyclogirl · 27/09/2011 11:11

Thanks for all the kind thoughts about my pal guys. And yeah, she'd kick my arse good and proper if she thought I was using her as an excuse to quit running.

Rhet I had a great run in the end thanks. My fave five mile route, really cleared the head.

Welcome Curry and Runner Fantastic half btw Runner, most impressed.

Loving the excuses for missing running last night!

I actually went running to avoid phase 3 of The Kitchen Project for the very Bowels of Hell Of course now the fabby kitchen is showing up the rest of the house for the shithole it has become. It's like living on the Fort Bridge.

June2009 · 27/09/2011 12:12

wow loads of new names :) welcome new runners!
Just had a quick look at the thread and not had time to properly catch up but runnerstipple I have achy legs too and went ofr a jacuzzi at the gym yesterday which was nice if nothing else, and also been having a protein shake a day since the race (on sunday) to repair the muscle. I can run up the stairs today so not too bad but quads are feeling it.
take care and congrats on your first HM, it was my first too :D I am still buzzing from it and can't wait to see my trainer tomorrow to tell him all about it, I think everyone else @ home is bored to hear about it ;)

futurity · 27/09/2011 12:26

Just done last LSR before half. Ran back from Cambridge..lovely and quiet at that time of the morning...saw lots of keen young students rushing around :) Went across to Grantchester meadows and passed a number of squirrels, a few cows and then past Jeffery Archers house! Last part of the run quite boring but the sun did come out at last and it was very warm! Hard to believe it is almost October.

CurrySpice · 27/09/2011 12:44

I'm stuck in a dreary meeting looking out of the window and thinking what a perfect day it would be for a run along the sea front Sad

stickylittlefingers · 27/09/2011 12:50

Hello everyone! Lovely to see lots of new people on the thread :)

encyclogirl so sorry to hear about your friend, it's such a horrible helpless feeling you get when something like that happens. Well done on getting out to run, definitely the best option for keeping your spirits up.

rhet sounds like you've had a good weekend! :)

fanny hope you're perking up. I take multivits with iron in all the time.

runnerstipple (hello!) I got some free jointace gel in a goody bag last year. Don't know if it's the rubbing it in or the actual gel which was helping, but it did seem to help with the sore quads. Sore hips are tricker tho (they do make me walk like an old lady Blush) and I think that's basically down to core strength. Which is a shame because I much prefer being out running to being at home doing stomach exercises!

ibby did you get your water back? Sounds like they managed that really badly, what a pain in the arse

moshi assuming you're happily asleep somewhere in SF right now, hope you're having a good and useful trip.

Well done to the racers, it's such good motivation to hear about the great times (in terms of speed and the having fun). I know it keeps being said but I'm going to say it too - this thread is bloddy brilliant! The Speedy Gonzaleses and the plodders, the old hands and the newbies, something for everyone and so much enthusiasm. Fantastic!

In case you're wondering "who the hell is she calling a plodder?" - it's me. I'm trying to speed myself up a bit. Basically, I can now do 10k in just under an hour, but I'd like to get it more like 50 mins. So today I went out for 6 miles, alternating 1 mile fast 1 mile slow. Did kind of make me laugh that my fast miles (8:50) are other people's slow miles (how do they do it?), but it felt good. Helps having the beautiful weather atm.

Happy running everyone!

stickylittlefingers · 27/09/2011 12:55

futurity - sounds like a lovely run (having a little sigh thinking about running across Grantchester meadows on a lovely morning like this). So you're tapering now?

futurity · 27/09/2011 13:13

Unfortunately it wasn't lovely when I ran across them...was still cloudy and grey... only brightened up once on the boring A road back home!

Yes..sort of tapering..my LSR is on Tuesdays so I don't get to do another one before my half (on the 9th October). Got a 10K on Sunday though so not taking it totally easy.

I'm definitely in the plodder category...am aiming for 59 mins 59 seconds on Sunday so I can say I did a 10K in sub one hour :)

stickylittlefingers · 27/09/2011 13:26

Nothing like a bit of plodding solidarity! Very good timing to have the 10k on Sunday. Go on, do it in 59:58, just push yourself :)

I'm not sure I'll even manage sub 1 hour in Richmond. The last time I did it I did it in 1:07. It turned out I was going down with a fluey cold, but didn't know that at the time. When I got up to Catterick garrison it was full blue lights and head between the legs to stop myself keeling over. Didn't think I'd finish, but thought I'd have a go, and felt much better on the way down again. Spent the next few days in bed with a high fever Hmm Hopefully this time I will do better!

rhetorician · 27/09/2011 13:36

another plodder here - did 10k to work this morning in a spectacular 1:04...but I do manage to do quite a lot of miles the plodding way...

OP posts:
Hatwoman · 27/09/2011 13:59

lawks this thread is busy! I've cast my eyes over it but can;t pretend to have really caught up. I got upgraded once (continuing the flying thing) when I was flying for work, and in among the middle-aged mainly male suits were 5 bright young, female things wearing lots of make-up and trendy clothes and generally clearly very happy with flying at the posh end of the plane. I had a vague idea that there was a some big new girl-band in the charts and decided it must be them. It was. It was the Spice Girls. The only other time I've flown posh was with Egypt Air. I watched some schmultzy film that provoked a tear to fall down my cheek. The air hostess promptly presented me with some tissues - and her act of kindness tipped me over the edge and reduced me to a blubbing wreck (much to dds' amusement).

The relay race was good - but I wish I'd trained more for it (was a bit of a late entry) and I just wasn;t feeling on form. The highlight though was to run through a farm - quite some distance from where I live - where my great grandfather and grandfather lived. My mum has always talked about it so it was nice to see it. It's not a farm anymore it's a posh house. still in a lovely spot though - and still has horses - my ggf and gf kept lots of horses for a haulage firm they started in the city (eventually shifting completely into haulage and leaving the farm).

My team came last in the relay. but for plodders my partner and I had a respectable time - strangely enough beating pairs from two really good running clubs. apparently they had injuries/got lost/or were hungover. any excuse...

DebiTheScot · 27/09/2011 14:01

I'm filling myself with vitamins as I think I'm getting ds2's cold. The glands on one side of my neck hurt and it hurts to swallow. Have 10k race on Sunday so don't want to be ill.
The friend I'm running with keeps telling me that she hasn't run for weeks and she'll be so slow but I can pretty much guarentee she'll beat me.
Planning a 30 min run with some sprints tonight, 6 miles tomorrow and probably 4 on Friday. I'm assuming 10k doesn't need much tapering (the last one I did was just after shin injury so had enforced tapering).

SOme good runs today. I'm a bit jealous of those of you who can get out during the day. I can only run in the evenings.

Themasterandmargaritas · 27/09/2011 15:43

Welcome newbies. Gosh we are really running across the world. Smile

Just back from work and school run

I just can't do this after work running thing

stickylittlefingers · 27/09/2011 16:14

I think I've figured out how you lot go so fast. You have ultra sonic welding in your bras...

I had to share this, wtf is ultra sonic welding?

<a class="break-all" href="http://www.lessbounce.com/acatalog/Berlei_Running_Bra.htmlwww.lessbounce.com/acatalog/Berlei_Running_Bra.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">very fast bra

15% off with code GNR15 if you want one (I'm worried my boobs will go really fast and the rest of me won't be able to keep up...

M&M I'm with you there. I always went before work when I was working, too flaked after. But (realising I should be urging you on, not commiserating) you know you want to... and you'll feel so much better after... go on, get them running shoes on

Wheelybug · 27/09/2011 18:16

Wow ! Ultra sonic boobs Sticky !! What with fanny and her knobs and you with your boobs this thread is sinking lower and lower Grin.

Welcome aboard new runners pop curry runnerstipple ! I hope the smut doesn't put you off.

at thecoo

Well done hat on your relay, sounds like an interesting route for you. How are you ?

encyclo - sorry about your friend. Keep on running ! I have had a few friends seriously ill over the last couple of years and I think of them everytime I'm feeling a bit like not running, or bored on the treadmill and think how lucky I am that I can run to make me snap out of it (not that I'm telling you to snap out of it, hopefully YSWIM).

Ankle causing problems today for the first ime since I've been back running properly. I am hoping it is caused by me following DrNo's lead and putting glamour before sport and wearing heels out partying for 2 nights in the last 3. I could feel it twinging during the evenings so hopefully the heatwave we're supposed to be haivng will keep me in my not at all glamorous fitflops which have done my various twinges the world of good.

So just a swim for me today, hopefully 5 miles treadmill tomorrow followed by my swim lesson.

Hope all's going well in San Fran Moshi

backwardpossom · 27/09/2011 18:59

Loving the idea of your boobs bombing off into the distance without you sticky!!!

I'm not going out this week I don't think. Going to save all my energy for Sunday... Am far too tired anyway. Seem to be really zonked at the moment. I need the holidays - a week and a half to go! Bring it on!

futurity · 27/09/2011 19:06

Just looked at the race calendar and see it is super Sunday this week..so many of us doing events Smile

orangehead · 27/09/2011 19:13

You can put me in plodding club too.
Sticky nothing coming up on the link, quite intrigued by ultra sonic boobs.
Had dn throw up on me today, lovely. He going home tonight. So hoping to do 6 miles tomorrow providing I don't come down with dn tummy bug,fx I don't.

Wiifitmama · 27/09/2011 20:04

Can I ask a race question please? I have my first one this weekend (only a 5 km) and wasn't sure ifmi should ru with my iPod/headphones like I usually do or not. I can't imagine a half hour run without listening to something but I have never run with other people either! What do you all do?

Also, the race is in East London and I live in NW London and will be taking public transport to get there and back. There are no facilities as such other than either portaloos or par toilets I think. My family will be picnicking with other families afterwards and I could do with tips on how to freshen up and stink everyone out afterwards!

Thanks!

orangehead · 27/09/2011 20:47

I always run with my ipod even in races but it just personal preference. You could take your ipod and try not switching it on and see if the find motivation of the crowd is enough for you. If not switch it on.
Regarding freshening up, tbh I don't sweat that much but usually find baby wipes and some body spray help for a quick easy fresh up.

Wheelybug · 27/09/2011 20:55

Urgh poor you (and DN) orange

wiifit - I have always used my ipod in races (haven't done many) even those that say you can't. But actually have been surprised by how I don't miss it on the odd ocassion I have run without it. Have you got a pocket it will fit in ? I run with a shuffle so I have put it in my little back pocket just in case sometimes.

There are lots of races this weekend - How's everyone feeling ?

backwardpossom · 27/09/2011 21:19

I tend not to, wiifit but actually I've had my best times in races where I've worn it!

runnerstipple · 27/09/2011 21:31

The race I did on Sunday banned all headphones, there were loads of signs saying that you would be disqualified if you wore them. Like wiifit I normally wear them when I run on my own, but it was okay without them. I missed them most at about 9 - 11 miles when I was struggling, but there were so many marshalls and supporters, who were really encouraging, all the way along the route that I would have missed if I'd been listening to music IYSWIM.

Thanks to everyone for post race recovery tips, I'll look for some jointace gel sticky next time I'm in town. Until then I'm using some Badger sore muscle rub that I found deep in the recesses of a drawer. I'm not sure that I could bring myself to get into a cold bath popbiscuit, although I've heard from lots of people that it really helps. Perhaps its mind over matter... a bit like running is some days!

squix · 27/09/2011 22:20

Wheely - I'm racing on Sunday - a 10k warm up for the GSR, hoping ankle's OK, but feeling good apart from that.

Did a good 4 and a bit miles round Hyde Park this morning - I've never seen so many runners outside of an organised event - there were hundreds and cyclists and people riding horses - just loads of folk running in the fog. It was also wierd running on the flat - about 30 secs per mile faster too.
