I'm so glad I'm not the only one busy saving the world Peach. It's amazing what you can achieve in three hours eh?

Popbiscuit · 26/09/2011 18:52

That sounds like my plan, Curry. Bummer about your ex; not very considerate. Never mind; wine almost as good as endorphins Grin.

We're just outside Toronto. Still quite warm here but leaves starting to turn; best time of year.

CurrySpice · 26/09/2011 18:54

oh I love Toronto - been there a couple of times and had a great time :o

How do you cope in the winter with running?

squix · 26/09/2011 18:54

june well done and a great race report and ibby too and moshi and tulip and anyone else I've forgotten - it's so great that there's loads of us on here now - everytime some one new joins I look forward to hearing about their expolits (hello curry - ohhh that might have sealed my decision for what to have for tea!)

Am in the big smoke for a few days (last time I was here was when I twisted my ankle a few weeks ago) so hoping to stay out of trouble this time. I am at a conference and attended a great workshop on creative techniques - I am now an expert at drawing fancy stick men! I am presenting at said conference on Wednesday (eeek!) - any top tips any of you have will be much appreciated. (I have bought a new pair of shoes for the occasion - don't tell DH Grin - I am wearing them in as we speak).

CurrySpice · 26/09/2011 18:56

Squix I think presenting is like racing

Start slow, then slow dowm :o

Good luck. Sounds like a great conference

backwardpossom · 26/09/2011 19:13

Hi Curry!

How do I cope in the winter? Wear extra warm clothes... Grin Actually, I much prefer running in the winter, but I do get really frustrated if it's snowy and I can't actually get out the house. Maybe I should join the gym this year...

futurity · 26/09/2011 20:46

Hi Curry ! I quite like running in the winter as well..once I can work out how many layers to put on as I normally go mad and put on hat and gloves and then realise I am too hot after about 5 minutes. I'm always surprised how warm running actually makes me.

CurrySpice · 26/09/2011 20:51

We had what we laughingly call a hard winter here in south east England last year and the pavements were inches thick with ice for weeks and weeks on end. Gym was the only option

I don't mind the cold because, as you say, you sson warm up. It's the underfoor conditions which are a problem sometimes. That plus the dark. Nervous about running in the dark.

Sound like a right wimp eh?

ibbydibby · 26/09/2011 20:57

Bummer about your friend Encyclo - sorry.

Curry roughly whereabouts in Essex are you? (I lived there until 3 years ago)

Peach I remember that stained baby clothes thing, think there is some scientific reason not sure what though. 2nd time round if anything got split I used to rinse through in cold water as soon as possible - or put in bucket to soak. Cheaper than any stain remover. It worked for tomato based goods and for milky things too (though harder to spot milky stains at the time because as you say they don't show up until months/years later)

Went to running club this evening, optimistic that water would be back on in time for a shower...it isn't...though according to water board we should have it back....have to ring back after 9pm..

backwardpossom · 26/09/2011 20:58

Well Curry I live in the north of Scotland and we definitely had a hard winter! I joined my running club this time last year and it made all the difference to my motivation :)

CurrySpice · 26/09/2011 21:06

Ibby I'm between Chelmsford and Southend

possum I would love to join a club but they are all midweek and as I'm a single parent and have the kids all week, I can't join till the kids are a bit older :(

backwardpossom · 26/09/2011 21:08

Well, maybe you could try the other thing I did and sign up for a spring half marathon? Grin

CurrySpice · 26/09/2011 21:10
CurrySpice · 26/09/2011 21:10

joined

peachsmuggler · 26/09/2011 21:21

Ha ha Curry, don't let the half marathon chat scare you off!! Much respect to you for finding the time, as a single mum, to run at all!!!

Thanks ibby, will keep that in mind this time round! Wonder if the milk stains will come out....not the end of the world if not, as have got hunners 'o the buggers!!!!

DebiTheScot · 26/09/2011 21:21

I did the dishes Ibby. After tea Blush. And that was early, usually dh does them all after the boys are in bed.
And I hoovered and I mopped the floors and I cleaned the loo. That's enough housework for the autumn I think.

I like running in the winter too. I always get hot so wear leggings and 2 tshirts max and maybe gloves and a headband to keep my ears cozy. Then just feel cold for the first half a mile until I get warmed up. Last years fortnight of ice didn't stop me running as jarring my back sledging on the 1st day of the snow did!

sfxmum · 26/09/2011 21:24

runnerstipple · 26/09/2011 21:43

Hello - I'm new here, but wanted to boast share with you that I ran my first half marathon yesterday - the Ipswich Half, and was delighted to do it in 2.24.30 (according to my Garmin, 2.24.33 on the timing chip). But, oh boy, am I feeling it today. Any tips for easing tired limbs that make me look - and groan - like a very old lady everytime I have to go up or down stairs or sit down/get up?

orangehead · 26/09/2011 21:54

Well done ibby and Moshi great times for both of you. *Moshi have great time in SF, and hope you find out all you need to know. I have never turned left on a plane.
Sounds like you had a good weekend Rhet, glad it all went well.
Thats awful encyclogirl about your friend.
Welcome curry, I'm certainly no fast runner but it keeps me fit and I love it and thats all that matters and DrNo is right we are lapping everyone on the sofa. I also have an ex that is a tad in considerate at times. Was in a resturant the other week about to order some wine whe ex rang to say his car had broke down so could I pick up the kids later. That put the end to my wine, how dare he Grin. Anyhow he is planning to start having the kids for a whole weekend in about a month, I won't know what to do with myself. but not holding my breathit will happen.
Popbiscuit that sounds a lovely run, if I hadn't already been out today your description would make me want to put my trainers now.
Did my first hill session tonight, didn't feel 100% before I started but was determined not to let it put me off. It went ok but kept getting a stitch. I was quite stressed and was running late for ds2 dance class, which is when I run. I was still in that rushing zone when I started and set off too fast hence the stitch I think. But we learn from these things.

orangehead · 26/09/2011 22:02

Welcome runnerstipple and well done, boast away thats a great time. Was it your first half?
I love running in the winter and hate running in the sun. The only problem is the ice, Im quite accident prone when there is no ice. But going to order those things to go on your shoes this year that somebody linked (very techincal description). Mental note to self not too wait to late when they are all sold out.

runnerstipple · 26/09/2011 22:07

Hi orangehead, thanks for the welcome. It was my first half, and I was aiming to do it in less than 2.30 (when they were re-opening the roads) so I was chuffed. I have to admit I found the last 2.5 miles tough going, especially as they stuck a sneaky hill in at 10.5 miles, but I'm already planning how I can get a faster time next time I attempt that distance. Any tips greatfully received...

futurity · 26/09/2011 22:30

curry I grew up in that area Smile

futurity · 26/09/2011 22:32

Great first half time runnerstipple ..mine was similar and the aching did improve after a few days! Doing my next one in two weeks so will let you know after that any tips for improving time (if I improve!!)

Popbiscuit · 26/09/2011 22:52

I love running in winter too but we get some days where it's minus 20 and running is just a really bad idea if you want to keep your nose and toes. We also get massive amounts of snow so unless everyone has been good and shovelled their sidewalks, they are impassable. Then have to run on roads. I usually go to the gym to use the treadmill on the really cold days but I think I might invest in one for home this year. Any tips/suggestions?

Hate running in the sun too orange; in the summer I get up at 5:00 to avoid it.
runnerstipple-Amazing! Well done! Going for a swim or having a very cold bath (just past hips) can be really soothing for tired limbs.

I have a question for you all. Do any of you get a bit blue/glum on rest days? I really struggle with this and although it's so tempting to go for a run I know I shouldn't to prevent injury (learned this lesson the hard way). Maybe it's just me?

orangehead · 26/09/2011 23:02

I know what you mean pop, how about doing a bit of crosstraining? Weights, swim, pilates or something like that. I have free weights at home and even if Im really busy or tired if just do 5 mins it makes me feel like I have done something
