all welcome to come and join in - we talk a lot on here, and are always glad of new people to natter with about running (and everything else)

Pawsnclaws · 25/09/2011 16:40

Oh and also wanted to ask about beginner triathlon equipment - my friend and I were talking yesterday about giving it a go, but what kind of bike would suit a beginner? And what kind of budget? I'm a good swimmer, could be ok on the bike, running is probably my weakest area, but just thinking about a new challenge.

orangehead · 25/09/2011 17:31

Wow June thats fantastic.
Im another one in awe of anyone doing a tri, my idea of a nightmare. I like swimming but a bit scared of water dont't like being unexpectely splashed.

backwardpossom · 25/09/2011 17:45

Paws the one I did yesterday was really beginner friendly, there were a number of us doing our first ever one. The bikes on display were all shapes and sizes. Road bike would definitely be best though. Maybe you could borrow one until you decided for sure you were keen on triathlons? I'd also recommend a tri suit. I had no bother with getting dressed etc in transition because of it, but my friend had her normal swimming costume on and had to fiddle about getting her running kit on when she came out of the pool.

June2009 · 25/09/2011 17:46

right, got the report, it's very long sorry...
posting it in a sec.

June2009 · 25/09/2011 17:47

So...

25/09, Run to the beat music half marathon, 21 km (13.1 miles). Official time 02:07:57.
My run keeper says 02:09:34, 06:04 average min/km. I didn't start it exactly on the starting line basically because I couldn't tell exactly where it was and didn't want to be messing around putting my iPhone back in my belt which is definitely NOT a bum bag.

Dd (2.3yo) woke me up at 4AM to come to sleep in our bed which is bad news as I just can't get any sleep if there is more than 2 people in the bed :) So I gave her some milk and went to sleep in the spare room for the rest of the night.

My alarm woke me up at 6:30, I got up and got ready, had my usual breakfast, took my vitamins, made a sandwich, went back upstairs a hundred times for credit card, maps, sanitary towels etc and some bathtowels (which I almost completely forgot about).

Run to the beat is based at the O2 Arena in Greenwich, it's a half hour drive from my place.
This year there were 17 000 runners apparently. (another shock, I didn't know it was that big)
I got butterflies in my tummy on the way there when I saw the big signs announcing road closures for a big sporting event Grin.
I stopped for petrol and water and got there at around 8:30, there was a queue of cars to get in the car park (I'd pre booked). It was open air which was a nice surprise, I was expecting a multi-storeys nightmare.

Once there there was a main stage at the entrance (few hundred metres from the car park.) and a Radio 1 DJ was doing a great job of keeping us entertained, telling us where to go, talking to spectators. I found the toilets really easily, there were loads of them, no queues.
I'd decided to leave my bag in the car to avoid queues and stuff but really shouldn't have worried because it was so well organised. I went to have a look at the baggage drop and there were no queues either.

Starting pens were divided as follows: Sub 1:20, 1:20 to 1:40, 1:40 to 2:00, 2:00 to 2:30 and over 2:30. I was in the 2:00 to 2:30. Originally thought it would take me over 2:30 and was being "optimistic".

Everything was well indicated and there were LOADS of marshals directing us. There was a really good happy atmosphere.
The music started on the stage which was nice. There was only a handful of people in my starting pen when I got there. The guy next to me had a garmin and a watch, he had to explain to the people next to him what it was for which was funny, I thought about you guys :D
I couldn't help but think that some of the people in my pen really didn't look that fit, bit worrying.
It was a little bit long waiting in the pens, you can't really warm up properly there.
Loads of people kept coming in, quite late some of them, in fact some after the race officialy started.

The race started at 9:45 on the dot but obviously there were three pens to go before ours, I think we crossed the starting line around 10:15am.
The course was fairly flat, a couple of "hills"which you guys would probably not think qualify as "hills" to be honest.

Thought about you fanny as barely 1K in the race some men had their knobs out (on the grass verge).
There were 14 music stations alone the way which was great. They had signed letting you know it was coming up so you could take your headphones off. The music from the DJ's really doesn't cover that much distance (500/750m) but it I found it really invigorating and always gave me a boost.

Pace wise I sarted quite fast (for me) around 10.5 km per hour according to my Runkeeper. I was doing an average of 5:45 per km and just tried to keep it at that. I did think maybe I should slow down but I felt good and people from my pen were going that pace so I just stuck with it.
some stats for you:

miles pace (min/mile elevation
1 9:03 -2
2 9:19 10
3 9:27 37
4 9:30 -17
5 10:18 83
6 10:15 38
7 7:31 -51
8 10:34 59
9 10:11 -23
10 10:05 10
11 9:56 -110
12 10:03 -21
13 10:28 -9
14 10:19 -4

Also for stats I burnt 1677 calories, and there is no chocolate cake in the house to make up for it!!!!

There were a 4 or 5 water/energy drinks stations but I didn't use any as I brought my bottle. I'm a sipper, I like to sip a little every km or so and the water stations were quite spaced out. My bottle lasted me just the right amount of time.

Some people were walking from 3k on. I didn't see anyone needing medical assistance for at least the first 15ks, and actually wondered if southern people are more responsible than northerners ;)
There were quite a few after that though, some were so close to the finish line as well.
I cheered some people on who were walking and tapped them on the back telling them there was not long to go. An older looking woman in front of me actually grabbed the hand of two young and fit guys who started walking to get them to keep on running, which worked.
(I saw them at the end, one of them lit up a fag!!, please tell me none of you guys smoke right??)

At 60 minutes running I'd covered just over 11k and thought it had gone really fast, started thinking about how long it would take me to finish and calculating in my head over and over again obsessively.
Somehow managed to miscalculate I think and was thinking "shit maybe I can do this in 2 hours and I really pushed myself hard mentally, sub 2 hours was the driving force behind my run today :D

The dj's were really good and the crowd were really helpful, I high-fived all the kids along the road.
I'd eventually decided to put my name tag at the back of my t-shirt so it wouldn't bother me at the front (because of the bum bag belt) and no one called my name, front of the t-shirt next time :D

You could download an app for Facebook with Nike + which told your friends when you started running and friends could leave comments, these were displayed on big screens while we were running. I actually saw one of mine from some friends which was a great boost too.

The last 3ks WERE hard. I remember you guys saying the last 3 miles or 3k shocking, and they weren't tooooo bad, but they were the hardest. I realised I wasn't going to do it in 2 hours but I really wanted to get as close as possible so that NEXT time I can really work towards it iyswim.

This is something that changed today actually because when I got there I really thought this would be my only half marathon, the training has been hard to fit in around my other stuff and I think I do prefer the "freedom" and choice I get with my other cardio/bodybuilding stuff. But as soon as I did my first 10k and my time was good and I could see I would finish close to 2hours I was already thinking "next year bladibla" Grin

The last 750m were great, some guy just started sprinting really fast and he got loads of cheers (there were loads of spectators for about 1km to the finishing line.) so I started sprinting a little bit, I tell you what there wasn't much left in me and I gave it my all, really felt like puking when I finally crossed the line. It was bliss, my legs were like jelly but they gave us water straight away, then there was a longish walk back to the baggage drop/toilets etc. Got our medal, gave back the chip and stretched.

At the end there were loads of people, stages and loads of music, some guy beatboxing on a stage etc. It all looked like fun but I just wanted to get my stuff and get home to dh and dd to be honest :D
Getting out of the car park was really quick, no queues there either.

Thank you all so much for all your encouragement, sharing your experiences and all the tips along the way, you really are a very special, very motivating bunch.
I feel all emotional now Grin.

fannybanjo · 25/09/2011 17:47

Well done June - bet you're chuffed and sounds like you thoroughly enjoyed it!! Hey not bad for someone who 12 months ago was 8 stone heavier! You should be bloody well proud of yourself.

Time on feet run today of 2 hours with my friend - 12.85 miles on the hardest hilliest course I've ever ran. So very pleased with today's run especially since I've not felt right.

fannybanjo · 25/09/2011 17:51

Bloody brilliant race report June - so happy for you! Isn't it amazing how something as simple as a race can make us feel like we've accomplished climbing Mt Everest. Haha at knobs - men have no shame!

Themasterandmargaritas · 25/09/2011 18:26

June great report. I'm delighted you enjoyed it so much.

I've definitely been missing out on the knobs. I need to pay much more attention. Wink

backwardpossom · 25/09/2011 18:32

Ah June that sounds brilliant! Well done you :)

fannybanjo · 25/09/2011 18:45

master you need a knob radar like June and I....

Pawsnclaws · 25/09/2011 18:51

Great race report - sounds like a really organised event too.

backward I have a bike unloved in the garage but it's quite a heavy mountain bike and needs a service. I think I would probably have to give a tri a go with that unless it was an absolute no-no, as I can't really justify a new bike cost unless it's really essential? Just on the tri-suit question - do they come with fairly substantial bra support? I'm an E cup and need my puppies to be bounce free or they'll be down to my knees by the age of 50!

Themasterandmargaritas · 25/09/2011 19:00

fanny you'd think they'd be easy to spot..

stickylittlefingers · 25/09/2011 19:04

That's fantastic June and brilliant race report too. Definitely sub 2 hours for the next one, it sounds like this is just the beginning!

Paws - totally empathise re being the dc's social secretary/taxi driver! There aren't many people who I regularly see now who aren't someone or others DM/DD. But generally they're a good bunch (few oddballs!!). Is the cold beginning to clear at all?

Did a reasonable 10k this morning (beautiful morning, very misty at first before the sun started to burn it off, and the trees are definitely turning now), 59.32, but it really took it out of me. Even after a hearty breakfast, I felt hungry and tired the rest of the day. The rest of the week I will be running after breakfast, so I hope that will mean I don't feel so knackered. Perhaps just one of those days.

fannybanjo · 25/09/2011 19:17

master well you'd think so but your average White male runner's knob somehow just passes you by without too much interference. Wink

June2009 · 25/09/2011 19:22

Also meant to add I'm in awe of anyone who has done or is training for a full marathon. This is hard work. You know some people run some marathons and that it's hard but I don't think you realise (or just can begin to imagine) how hard until you've done a half, definitely the case for me.

Other stats from the race report:

Overall Race Statistics:
10754 TOTAL RUNNERS
139802 TOTAL DISTANCE (MILES)
02:07:28 AVERAGE TIME
9'43"/m AVERAGE PACE

My stats:
I placed 6025th out of 10754 runners (so not 17000 then?)
Time 02:07:57
Pace: 9"46' /mile
3 miles 27:21 pace 09"07'
6 miles 29:55 pace 09"58'
9 miles 31:16 pace 10"25'
13 miles 29:52 pace 09"57'

Something I couldn't work out was how some people could be walking quite slowly but still be in front of me. I think (now that I'm thinking straight) they must have started in a previous pen or were just really fast and then burnt out or something. At the time it baffled me :)

Is it do-able to shave 8 minutes off and actually realistically aim for a sub 2 hour half marathon next time (say in 12 months) or is that too much time to work on? How much time have you guys improved your pbs by?

futurity · 25/09/2011 19:22

Fantastic report June ...you really captured the whole day and I felt I was there with you! Really hope I have such a successful and enjoyable half in two weeks time.

Themasterandmargaritas · 25/09/2011 19:24
Grin
orangehead · 25/09/2011 19:25

Breat report June, sunds like you really enjoyed it.

orangehead · 25/09/2011 19:28

Some how the 'b' replaced the 'g' Blush. Great report I should say.

backwardpossom · 25/09/2011 19:30

Paws it was my mountain bike that I used and I really was at a disadvantage. The event I did did not specify that you needed a road bike, but I suspect other more serious events might. I don't have much boobage to speak of, so the tri suit was supportive enough for me! It had a built-in sports bra and it was very tight, so I think having larger boobs would have been ok!

June you could definitely aim for sub-2 hour next time - that's my plan after a similar time to yours! Grin

Pawsnclaws · 25/09/2011 19:51

I would say a sub-2 hours is well within your grasp June!

sticky I woke up this morning feeling really tired and chesty, but I've felt better as the day has gone on. I needed a day off today that's for sure.

backward I was googling for beginner advice on bikes, and the gist seemed to be that a proper tri bike gives you a big advantage not just in the bike section but also the run. In fact the article I read suggested that for the standard distance you could be looking at saving 10 minutes on the bike time and 5 minutes on the run, which is huge overall. Hmm ....

Wheelybug · 25/09/2011 19:53

On my phone so popping in - really well done June ! Sounds a fab event and you did so well.

Backward - well done at the tri. Sounds fun but a bit daunting. I'm going to add that book to my Christmas list I think.

Did 8.2 miles with dh yesterday . What should have been a LSR turned into a race pace run and we did it in 69 mins. Tried half a gel in the middle as never had one before and took on water throughout and didn't feel sick despite pushing myself.

How did the other racers get on today ?

DebiTheScot · 25/09/2011 20:00

Paws I'd actually say don't buy a trisuit. For both of mine I wore tri shorts and a tight, fitted sports vest type top (not a cropped one) then pulled a tshirt on for the cycle and run. Advantage of separates rather than a 1 piece are that if you were to eventually do a longer tri you can go to the toilet no prob and it's more flexible. I wear my trishorts for cycles month and will wear them for the duathlon next month.

Also I did both mine on a mountain bike but it is a good bike with a fairly small frame and no suspension and so is quite light (for a mountain bike). And there were other mountain bikes doing them too. If you could borrow a lighter bike that'd be good but at £500+ I wouldn't fork out for a road bike until you know you'll use it a lot. I am so glad I got mine, it's so much easier to ride especially uphill (although I'm a bit annoyed that so far my average speed isn't much more than on the mountain bike, 15mph up to about 16mph)

Great report June and a great time. Esp as you were thinking 2:30. Your split times are making me think I could do one in less than 2:15 as your faster miles are about the speed I normally run at.

tulip27 · 25/09/2011 20:03

Well done june you beat me by 1 min. I was 2.10. Race reports would read similar to yours but it was mile 6 that I found really hard but by mile 7 I was back in the game. I also 'tried' to sprint the last 1/2 mile and also nearly puked. I wonder what they would have thought if I did. Is that something people actually do?
Can't wait til the next one. Although my legs feel like I am 80 years old tonight so it may be a while Wink.
Anyone know how moshi got on?

backwardpossom · 25/09/2011 20:07

Debi That's kind of what I meant by a tri suit, sorry! I just meant as opposed to a traditional swimming costume.
