Can I exercise after a slipped disc?

I slipped a disc last year but carried on exercising. As the disc was dislocated and I carried on exercising, I squeezed all of the jelly-stuff out of the disc. It felt like my bones were literally clanking together and when I first saw the phsyio, she told me this was exactly what was happening.

Anyhow, after weeks of painful physio, I made a complete recovery. I get the occasional twinge, but am mostly fine. However, I did a LBT class a few weeks back, and my back felt quite bad during the class and afterwards. I am now scared to try again.

But I really need to exercise. I live in the desert so can't go for walks. I have a gym in my building where they hold classes every day. There is Cardio, Boxercise, Zumba, that kind of thing. I would love to get involved but I am scared. Can anybody give me some advice please? Thanks.
