Good luck debi!

I'm supposed to be running this evening but DH is out. I might check out this plyometric malarky instead and see if I can do it in the comfort of my own home. Although I'm sure comfort is probably not the right word to use...

I still haven't found a suitable 10k training plan so think i'll have to adapt one to suit me. I can comfortably run just over 5k so does an increase of half a mile every week sound ok?

Welcome to all the newcomers!

notyummy · 06/07/2011 17:05

Yeah - tbh, comfort and plyometric not something in the same sentence as you said...but good if stuck at home. Try timing yourself and doing one minute jumping lunges, one minute bunny hops etc
Good luck Debi.

Themasterandmargaritas · 06/07/2011 17:20

Good luck Debi and welcome newbies. Smile

I hope you start to feel better soon Driving and well done on the donation, people are flat out at work trying to cope with the crisis. Sad

I think I need to find a running club to get me motivated.

This was just posted on the asics FB page funnily enough!

Themasterandmargaritas · 06/07/2011 18:47

And here Dr No is . I'm going to give them a go tomorrow,

Peakrunner · 06/07/2011 20:33

I think I'm going to need some company to do those drills in public!

Reading about plyometrics in Runners world the key seems to be bursts of exercise with a 2 minute recovery between sets so muscles dont get overtired.

Well done! Lots of Smile and a little bit of Envy !

Wheelybug · 06/07/2011 22:15

well done on here too debi !

Science I haven't suffered from balck toe nails since wearing my current type of shoe (3 pairs later) - they are quite a bit bigger than my usual size (a whole size if not a little more).

DebiTheScot · 06/07/2011 22:54

Thanks everyone Smile I am so chuffed with myself. I really, really didn't expect that! It was a good race all on road and no steep hills. It seemed more down than up but as it was a loop that'd be impossible!
My mad lovely friend was running it too and at the start was complaining that she didn't want to do it and she hadn't trained at all so I thought maybe I'd have a chance of sticking with her. We were together for about 4k then she gradually pulled away although I could see her until about 8k. I had my watch on (first time I've remembered it for a race) and that really helped. It was really encouraging to see each km only take about 5:10 (it was 7k before the time crept into the next minute and said 36 rather than 35) and I felt good for most of it apart from a slight stitch at one point.
5k took 26 minutes and I think I relaxed after that as I knew I'd still be ok even if I slowed a bit.
The chip times are online already and it has me as 53:07 and my friend as 51:30 so she was really happy too. And I came 35th out of 88 in my category.

And I did got for a wee swim this aft too, maybe that's the secret to a good race!

Wow Debi, that's an amazing time, well done, you must be dead chuffed!!

Hope you feel better soon Driving, make sure you lay low.

Btw, agree plyometrics are a great addition to any running training plan, and quite good fun too! (tries to contain masochistic inner self) Grin

sfxmum · 06/07/2011 23:07

DebiGrin wow well done you

short runs only here but cross training a bit more, so parts of me are sore, best not get so lax, it really improves overall fitness

proper catch tomorrow, too many posts to read and I am a bit tipsy, gig down the road

TheChewyToffeeMum · 07/07/2011 08:45

Whoop Whoop! Well done Debi - you must be feeling on top of the world. This is why we do it isn't it?

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 07/07/2011 08:58

Hello, could I join you please?

I am not quite at the distance of some of you ladies, as I am doing a 5k Race for Life on 17/7/11. But I am planning on doing a 10k in October. Oh and I did do a sprint triathlon last month (there dont' seem to be any triathlon threads knocking about!)

I really enjoy running, but it really does my back in, so have to be careful. Hence starting the triathlon route. It's also hard I think to break through the initial fitness barrier and get the distances longer and longer.

robino · 07/07/2011 09:45

Well done Debi!

Quenelle and Peakrunner - it's weird starting again isn't it? I didn't ever manage to get up to anything above 5-6km between DDs 2 and 3 but as there will be no more babies in this house I feel a bit more determined! I just need to take it easy until my back/ leg/foot wonkiness is sorted. And I should probably whisper this but I am very proud of how my pelvic floor has held up - it is the least of my worries when I am running (which either tells me that my pelvic floor is fab or I am very rubbish at running.....)

Quenelle · 07/07/2011 10:30

Well done Debi. From 1:01 to 53:07! You must look like this Grin today.

It is weird robino, I would say at the moment the mind is 80% willing and the body is trying to catch up. Once I can do 5k comfortably and I'm on a training plan things should start to improve steadily. Although, I would love to have another baby before everything shrivels up completely in the not too distant future, so am prepared for it all to go to pot again in the next year or so.

Cherry I would love to try a triathlon, what an achievement. I expect the different forms of training keep the injury risk to a minimum too. Sadly I would need swimming lessons because I can only do old lady breaststroke and I don't have a bike...

drivingmisscrazy · 07/07/2011 10:59

couldn't stand sitting on my arse any longer, so went out for an easy 7.5k this morning - it felt ok. But I have an ache in the middle of the top of my back IYSWIM which I think is my lung...glad I went and am feeling generally rather better.

I'd love to do a triathlon too, but like others can only do breaststroke, and am not sure that the household budget could stand my inevitable obsession with bits of bike gear (I do ride a bike, but it wouldn't be remotely suitable for triathlon Hmm). Having said that, some years ago I got stranded by a thunderstorm in Geneva where the British tri team had been participating in an event. My God they had fabulous bodies Blush

DebiTheScot · 07/07/2011 12:22

Hello wishiwascherrymenlove, I've done a sprint tri too and have another one next week. Part of the reason I joined this thread was because there wasn't a tri thread (not surprisingly!). There are a couple of triathletes here (if I can call myself that!) so you are very welcome. I am doing a few running races too but I probably get more of a buzz from the cycling. But having said that, I do feel great after yesterdays 10k and I wouldn't enter a cycling race as I don't have a road bike and I think I'd come last in a cycle race even if I did. (for some reason I imagine cycle races to be full of pros and not any normal average fitness people like you get in running races)

For those of you thinking you'd like to try a tri they're really not that bad. I couldn't swim proper crawl but made myself learn to do it as my breast stroke technique was even worse. I don't swim fast (10 mins for 400m) and my technique is pretty poor I think but I figured that when the race is 1.5hrs (that was my time was the last one) it's not worth busting a gut to get the time down by 2 minutes. I should just do duathlons I guess.
And I have a mountain bike and wasn't the only one with one. The sprint tris (esp I think ones where the swim is in a pool) will always have people in it who are 'normal average fitness' people.

DebiTheScot · 07/07/2011 12:27

meant to say welcome to the other new people too, peakrunner and anyone else?

Who was it who lives in Scotland and does lots of fell running and her husband broke both his arms? Has she disappeared?

OP posts:
futurity · 07/07/2011 13:14

welcome to all newcomers!

I'd like to possibly perhaps maybe do a triathlon at some point. When I got my road bike recently everyone asked if that was my plan but I don't think I am ready yet...or have the time...or the money! In my head my next goal is the marathon (if I ever get a place). Once that is done I may investigate a triathlon ...although I would have to improve at swimming (no good at breaststroke..quite good at front crawl) and its the whole transition thing that scares me!. I think the London Tri is on soon on tv...I will have to watch it to see if it freaks me out or not.

Wheelybug · 07/07/2011 13:59

debi - I think you're thinking of hatwoman - She doesn't live in Scotland though (somewhere up north though... Yorkshire or Derbyshire or somewhere (can you tell I'm from the southest of south ?? )

For all aspiring triathletes like myself (that is, I am aspiring) there is a women's only novice one at Dorney Lakes. The distances are short (IIRC - 400m swim, can 't remember bike 5K ? and 2.5K run) so quite achievable I thought although adding transition in is another matter. I am planning on doing this next year (it was last weekend this year). I am in same position as you guys - no bike and swimming needs work.

That said, I went for a swim today as I am resting foot and was suprised by how much better I was at swimming which I can only put down to being much fitter generally. I was doing lengths of front crawl albeit I suspect poorly in style but last time I went I couldn't do a length or maybe 1. So I had got into a small group for some stroke improvement lessons but may change to a few private ones as I think I mainly need to be told proper technique and then practice.

On the bike front, my birthday is a week today and as you may recall, I am hoping for a bike having expected one for christmas (And getting a kindle). DH keeps asking me what I want and when I say 'humph, a bike' he said 'oh still, really ?' . not sure if he is winding me up or really hoping to change my mind !!

WelcomeCherry and well done Driving for getting back out there !

Wheelybug · 07/07/2011 14:02

oh and facebookers - I am going to link to my 'team' sponsor page on facebook. Please don't worry about sponsoring me/us. We have only really put it together on behalf of my Mum as I don't feel comfortable asking for sponsorship for myself for 5K but there are a few friends who know my mum and have said they'll chip in, hence why its easiest to put it on FB.

I'll come and beg for cash when I am doing something much longer next year !!
