a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

peachsmuggler · 10/06/2011 18:50

My post makes no sense now that last ond has dissapeared Smile

peachsmuggler · 10/06/2011 18:51

Oh, it's there. Please excuse my rambling, I believe it's placenta related...

Themasterandmargaritas · 10/06/2011 19:02

Peachy, you are on form tonight. Grin

at the joby reference.

backwardpossom · 10/06/2011 19:28

Moshi great news about your mum!

Driving delighted to hear your news about your little girl Grin

notyummy Wow! Shock

Hiya joby :)

Good luck to our racers this weekend, hope you enjoy it! :) I'm off for a wine... Wink

Wheelybug · 10/06/2011 19:55

childish snigger too about how many Debi will have between her legs... Good luck though Debi - it sounds like fun (that bit wasn't meant to be smutty).

meant to say good luck too to SFX - I will sponsor you later - got yourpage from FB so hopefully will do it tonight !

Glad all is well with you peachy, apart from placenta related brain mushyness. Have a good time in Scotland.

Yummy - well done on your 1 hr 20 even if its not as fast as you hoped. its not boasting at all. Its what we're all here for !!

drivingmisscrazy · 10/06/2011 19:56

it is me (driving) under that hat...sorry was on DP's machine and forgot to look Blush. Needless to say, she is not a runner...peach exciting...

oddly enough we had a boy's name and were worrying about a girl's name and finally started to settle on one yesterday

good luck to drNo (now famous :o) and futurity and now debi too. Day off for me tomorrow and then a 10 miler on Sunday - my first long run since the IHMOID which I now realise I just wasn't ready for after 5 months back running - it's taking me almost twice as long to get back to where I was

notyummy · 10/06/2011 19:57

God, none of my posts about my run make sense! I run at 8 miles AN HOUR when I do an 8 mile route, so hence me thinking that an hour and 15 would be reasonable. (8 miles and hour, plus 2 miles in 15 minutes.) How hard can it be NY??

But of course, that speed also adds up to 8 minute miles, which is what I always seem to do regardless of 5 miles, 10 miles or HM!

EmmaBemma · 10/06/2011 20:16

good luck to futurity and DrNo! I hope you both cruise over the finishing line with the times you're both aiming for. futurity, hope your cold comes to nothing, but if not I read some study somewhere... I can try to find it online if you want, but basically they made people with mild colds (from the neck up, not chesty ones or flu) do exercise and noticed no decrease in cardiovascular perfomance. Vicks First Defense is also supposed to be not bad.

Hello Joby! I'm a newbie too, nice to have some company. It's great when you start to see definite improvements isn't it. When I started running I couldn't manage more than a couple of minutes non-stop. Even 1/4 hour seemed beyond my grasp.

congratulations driving, girls are ace. I've got two too (

DebiTheScot · 10/06/2011 21:13

Grin at my comment! I never noticed at the time how it sounded
I also sniggered at joby, sorry Joby Grin

bonkers20 · 10/06/2011 21:55

Alright you lot. I need some help with my belly. Will running help get rid of the crepey skin I have just above the bikini line? I am not in the slightest bit overweight so I don't need to diet. The only exercise I do is running.

I am going to a conference in LA soon. Should I bunk off and get some cosmetic surgery?! They do it on street corners while you wait over there don't they?!

Thanks

EmmaBemma · 10/06/2011 22:08

I don't think the running will do it, bonkers. I've got that too and it's just loose skin that hasn't pinged back from being stretched out in pregnancy. Some people swear by Bio Oil for this sort of thing; I never remember to buy any or I'd give that a go myself.

drivingmisscrazy · 10/06/2011 22:27

ladies - these people need our help, they can't see the point of running , they just need enlightenment!

OP posts:
YeahThatsTheBadger · 10/06/2011 22:29

Bonkers same here. I'm not overweight but have the crepey skin look. Mine is having big babies I think (not big by normal standards but I'm under 5ft so everything is big to meSmile).

I read somewhere (I'm always reading something, somewhere!) that it's a layer of fat that can be very difficult to get of. Strict diet and other forms of exercise (not just cardio) are the best way to do it I've been told.

I think I need to change how I feel about myself, which hasn't got better since having children. Long term goal I reckon (like running the London MarathonGrin)

notyummy · 10/06/2011 22:30

Pilates and circuit training Bonkers. Basically things that cause a searing pain in your core abs...and running may be responsible for some sort of pain, but not usually there!

backwardpossom · 10/06/2011 22:34

Have put in my tuppenceworth...

bonkers20 · 10/06/2011 22:35

driving I just popped over there and recommended a good running bra. There, I've done my bit.

YeahThatsTheBadger · 10/06/2011 22:36

notyummy can you do pilates at home from a dvd or whatever? Would it be as effective as going to a class? I want to do something else like circuit training or pilates eventually but for now would quite happily do it at home.

notyummy · 10/06/2011 22:41

I think the 'by the book' answer is that you should go to a class. However I have work, a long commute and a DH who only comes home for 2/3 days a month at the moment. I am very much a DVD person! I use Kristin MacGees MTV Pilates, and I know that sounds naffola, but it is a really good workout. I also use the various Jillian Michaels DVDs for circuits (No more Trouble Zones, 6 Week 6 Pack, 30 Day Shred.) NOne of the ones I have listed are easy, however you should have some base fitness from running - and frankly, DVDs that are easy (step this way Lorraine Kelly....) are not going to make much difference. I think some people just kid themselves about the level of effort that is required to really tone up.

bonkers20 · 10/06/2011 22:44

Well, I didn't have big babies (both around 7lb) and I am 5'8" but I guess they stretched my skin beyond its elastic limit.

I've tried Pilates and didn't really enjoy it. Because my exercise time is limited (like most peoples of course) I much prefer to do cardio exercise otherwise I don't get the buzzy feeling. Circuits would be good and they do it at work, but again I prefer to go running. Gosh, listen to me....excuses, excuses!

YeahThatsTheBadger · 10/06/2011 22:45

'Naffola' Grin
Thanks for that. My birthday in a few weeks so may be steering DH towards one of those DVD's!

bonkers20 · 10/06/2011 22:47

You do circuits in your house?!

drivingmisscrazy · 10/06/2011 22:48

another question - those of you who do circuits, do you think once a week would be enough? there's sessions at work (i work in a uni and they have pretty good sports sessions. Cheap too), but they are at 6 or 7pm, and it's on the other side of town, so I'd only be able to stay late one night a week. I'm conscious that I only have running (and commuter biking) fitness and that I probably need to supplement this.

My plan of reducing my easy pace and increasing my tempo/interval pace seems to be working, somewhat (despite the dead feet effect) - I'll keep working on it. More effort required - I lose confidence when it gets hard (subliminally suspect that I think that I am going to have a heart attack like my dad did if I push myself too hard. Not sure how to crack that one...)

OP posts:
notyummy · 10/06/2011 22:51

Circuits can easily be done at home. They dont need to involve running around a large gym. Any cardio interval for 2 minutes (partcularly things like jumping lunges....) followed immediately by 3 minutes of strength stuff using a challenging weight....and then repeat. Either 30 Day Shred or Billy Blanks Ultimate Bootcamp will circuit you to sweaty pain in your very own living room.

notyummy · 10/06/2011 22:54

The MTV pilates has 2 25 minute workouts. I quite often do one and then do 20 minutes on the crosstrainer or have a quick run. In an ideal world fitness training should be a mixture of cardio, strength and flexibility. I try and do a yoga DVD once a week for the flexibility, 2 circuits sessions and 2 or 3 runs. I see the yoga as almost a rest day - but I do feel great after it. Running undoubted the best for all round fitness and calorie burn, but doesn't give me the toned arms or muscle tone on stomach that I want.
