Squix very well done. How frustrating to be just slightly over 2hrs but for sure that means that next time you will be well under. Smile

Thanks for the link Daisy, this is Lewa, one of the world's toughest marathons. Thank heavens I am only doing a half. Wink. I have mapped one of my training runs and is fascinating to see an elevation of 500m!

Dr No I have always gone up to 18k as my maximum run, which has worked just fine. I'm with Squix, if it feels ok then up it to 12 miles up to 1 week before hand then a couple of gentle runs the last week just to keep legs stretched. I am not a fan of long tapering I have to admit...

Wheelybug · 22/05/2011 20:28

Well done Squix - sounds likea great time to me... but cna understand the frustration of the 70 seconds !

Hello master !

10.5K this evening for me. I thought I was running an easyish route with only 1 hill and had forgotten about another one. That'll teach me Grin.

I wonder how the other Edinburgh-ers have got on ?

MoshiMoshi · 22/05/2011 21:05

DrNo - I reckon a week of tapering is fine for a half. It is only when you go longer that you might want to properly consider tapering. And I think that you will benefit hugely from having the confidence of knowing that you can run the distance or nearly the distance. So try 12 miles as has been suggested but make sure it is very easy and very slow and you rest the day before and after that you ease off so it does not knacker you for the rest of the week when you should be getting physically ready for your race and not recovering from pushing yourself on a 12 mile run having not run that distance before!

master - amazing and mad in equal measures!

Am wondering how the others runners did today?!!!!

peachsmuggler · 22/05/2011 21:06

Well done squix, that's a brilliant time! You will defo be under 2 for your next one. I find softplay quite a struggle at the best of time so respect for you for post half marathon softplay!!!

drivingmisscrazy · 22/05/2011 21:10

master I note that the race info focusses primarily on first aid and medical assistance! I couldn't do it - on recent showings it would take me about a year to get around...looks amazing, though

OP posts:
squix · 22/05/2011 22:15

Thanks everyone - just need to find the next one now!

DrNorthener - I'd agree that doing the distance is a great confidence boost. I did 8 miles the Sunday before then a couple of 3 to 4 milers last week - so a weeks taper did the job.

MrsWednesday · 22/05/2011 22:28

I'm back! Congrats to Squix for a fabulous time and to Driving for surviving what sounds like hellish conditions and finishing in an amazing time. Hope backwardpossom is ok and has had a good day.

I've had a brilliant time, my sister and I got round in 4 hours 23 minutes and I felt pretty good for all of it! Even the driving wind didn't put me off (too much) Grin

Completely agree, the organisation at the end was appalling - we had to queue, stand, wait, queue etc etc for THREE HOURS after we'd finished, and didn't sit down until we got on the train home at 6pm.

Will do a race report tomorrow but I just wanted to say thank you so much for all the support and advice I've had from you all in the build up, it has been absolutely vital.

MoshiMoshi · 22/05/2011 23:02

Amazing time MrsWeds in terrible conditions and appalling organisation. Looking forward to your full report when you find time to post it! Get a great night's sleep in - you deserve it!

backwardpossom · 22/05/2011 23:29

Hi guys! Just a quick one as am on iPod after driving 4 hours to get home from Edinburgh. Loved loved loved it! 2:07 for my first half, am delighted! Was quicker than I thought I'd be. Am on such a high! Thanks for all your support x

Well done to everyone this weekend - I'll hopefully be able to catch up properly tomorrow, but it's bedtime now...

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 23/05/2011 04:11

Well done squix, Mrswed and possum, you have all done amazingly well!
Hope you all feel ok in the morning.

DrNortherner · 23/05/2011 07:38

Well done backwards and MrsWeds! Great times. You both sound so happy! Grin

Hope you slept well. Looking forward to race reports!

drivingmisscrazy · 23/05/2011 09:01

great times fr both Mrsweds and backwards. I really wish I had done a flat road race this time - it's been nearly 3 years since I ran a half and this wasn't a beginners' race at all.

Blowing a gale and driving winds (just like saturday in fact); quads still sore, everything locked down for Obama's visit (park closed Angry), but hoping to amble around for 5 miles recovery tomorrow

June2009 · 23/05/2011 12:48

heya, I'm thinking of joining Nike's run to the beat half marathon.
I have a very good level of fitness however I don't do that much running, maybe once every two weeks I do 5k (quite easily). Looking for a challenge I guess...A friend of mine is doing it, but she runs quite a lot more than me, she's already preparing for it, she did 10 miles a couple of weeks ago.
The race is in september.
Has anyone does this particular race before? How do you prepare for a half marathon?

pawsnclaws · 23/05/2011 12:56

Just wanted to add my congratulations ladies, well done and fabulous times!

Wheelybug · 23/05/2011 13:03

Fantastic MrsW and Backwards - great times. Sounds like you had a good time too which is even better. Hope everyone is feeling ok today !

Driving - I do feel for you and your fellow dubliners what with the Queen last week and Obama this week, it must be really irritating (and not v. helpful to the economy !!).

June - I've not done a half (yet) so can't advise, am sure someone will be along in a minute to advise properly but why don't you take a look at a training plan (Bupa ?) to see if you could fit in the level of training required. I would think if you have the time to train you could do it. FWIW, a friend did the Run to the Beat last year and I think it was a good race.

drivingmisscrazy · 23/05/2011 14:31

hi June2009 - or Hal Higdon's half marathon plans? they build slowly which will be the main thing if you are fit, but not used to running - building the muscles will be harder than the cardio element.

Wheely - it is a bit, but no-one has anything much else to do, and it is quite exciting having all these visitors in town. it's nice to have something to feel good about for once...just irritated about the complete lock-down of my beloved park for Obama (this wasn't true for the queen - you could run there no problem). It's odd that he's going in the motorcade for distances that I regularly run as part of my regular trots around there! surely it would be nice for them to walk a few hundred metres?

MrsWednesday · 23/05/2011 15:32

My legs have totally seized up today, but as all I have to do is lie on the sofa and eat it's not too much of a problem Grin

Here's my attempt at a quick race report! Having spent so much time stressing, planning, worrying and training, it was just great to finally get on with it. Had a restful afternoon and evening in Edinburgh with my sister (running partner), families had been left behind in Leeds so we had no one to look after which was great (am also v ratty on race day Squix).

Got to the start with loads of time to spare so managed to sort bag drop-offs, toilet trips etc with no hassle. Had energy bar and some sips of water whilst sitting wearing my rather fetching bin bag, so was fairly chilled out by the time it started.

We planned to run 10 minute miles throughout, so started steadily and kept an eye on the watch - I felt ok for the first bit, and had a gel at 5 miles but then had a real slump around 7-9 miles as it just seemed like we had such a long way still to go and I was starting to feel pain in my right thigh. Had a ibruprofen to take my mind off it which worked, and as soon as we hit 13 miles I really perked up.

Part of the course was out and back so we saw all the elite runners passing us going the other way which was great, and by 16 miles I was feeling the best I've ever felt in any of my long runs. Had gels at 10, 14, 18, 22 miles, water from the water stations but no energy drinks. By the time we turned to go back to Musselburgh at 18 miles, we were starting to overtake people and that carried on to the end pretty much, even though we were running into a strong wind - we did the second half faster than the first, and the last mile fastest of all. I got a bit tearful in the last mile and at the finish (still am actually!) because I am so chuffed to have got that far Smile

Although my time was 3 minutes slower than I'd planned (aimed for 4 hrs 20), I really don't care because we did it, loved it, and felt strong and happy all the way - the course was lovely, it was sociable and only the relay people getting in the way was an annoyance (why have them in a marathon? Especially when they are WALKING!!!). Have put some pictures on Facebook and on my Just Giving page if anyone can find me on there.

Spoke to DH as soon as I'd finished and he asked if I'd do another one and I was absolutely definite that I would (not sure he was impressed by that answer!).

The finishing area was a total shambles: we had to queue for 45 minutes to get t-shirts (and I got given a fun run one by mistake), then queue again to get out, walk a mile to the bus, queue again, give up, queue (and fight) for the train etc etc. Not good after running 26 miles!

Sorry it's so long! I will get it off my chest here so I don't bore non-runners in real life with all the details because they won't care at all Smile

Just want to say thank you again for all your help, support, advice and sponsorship, and for listening to all my whinges about injuries for the last 5 months.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 23/05/2011 15:38

No need to apologise MrsWednesday - I love reading other peoples race accounts. Sounds like you got your pacing just right.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 23/05/2011 15:39

Contemplating running this evening in v.v. high winds - I hope I don't get hit by a falling tree!

I have updated the list to remove my Half marathon in June, I'm not able to run far at the moment, there is no chance of me recovering in time sadly...

On a more positive note I did 80 miles on my bike last week and ran 8 miles aswell. I am planning to build my bike mileage a bit over the next few weeks and give my knee a complete break from running.

Great race report MrsWed sounds like you ran a really great raceSmile

I could barely move the day after my marathon, getting home on the train was agony...all those steps in the tube stations

The finish sounds like hell!!

Have a lovely relaxing week, you have earned it!

Themasterandmargaritas · 23/05/2011 15:49

Wow, HUGE congrats to Mrs W and possum, awesome timings. Sounds like you had a ball, apart from the crappy bit at the end.

to wheely. I am bit irregular nowadays, you guys move so fast Wink.

Yes Lewa is slightly mad, it is now my 3rd time doing it. The first time my knee seized up at 18k and it took me 2.28, the second time it took 2.18. I am hoping for 2.10 (yeah right). When I ran the Nairobi half in October (which is flatish) it took about 2hrs 3. The problem is the camping the night before. And the sun. Oh and the altitude. Mustn't forget the terrain either. When the Kenyans can only manage the marathon in 2.11 you know it must be tough. Grin

Daisy I don't think Americans know how to walk do they?

Welcome June. Another schedule to look at is City Runs.

backwardpossom · 23/05/2011 15:56

DS napping, so hopefully I get the chance to write a wee race report - this could get long!

Firstly, thank you so much for all your support on this thread, and furthermore, for sponsoring me. I've raised £891 for Macmillan so far which was so unexpected. So thanks, all of you. :)

I went down to stay with my cousin (who is an amazing runner) who lives on the north side of the Forth Road Bridge on Friday straight after work. It's a 4 hour drive down there for me and I should have said I was leaving so early as I never got the chance to thank you all before I left and felt guilty about it! Anyway, I decided to go into Edinburgh on the Saturday morning on the train and have a wander around and get my bearings - big mistake! I couldn't find where the start was going to be, I couldn't work out how I was going to get to Edinburgh in the morning (as it was too early for trains/buses) and I was beginning to wish I'd just paid for a hotel in Edinburgh - I had to drive through on the Sunday morning and I don't know Edinburgh very well so didn't know where to park etc. I got back to my cousin's for dinner and he tried to explain to me where I could park etc, but I was still panicking about being in the right place at the right time etc.

So, to Sunday, I got up at 5:30am and had a bagel with peanut butter. Was so nervous! Left his place at about 6:30am and managed to get to Edinburgh without any hiccups (thanks TomTom!) and I was lucky to find a place to park just off Leith Walk, although I did wonder throughout the day whether the car would still be there when I got back! Wink I spotted a guy with a luminous yellow running top on so I stalked him up to Princes Street and spotted the big trucks for our bags and the masses of people! I've never run in such a big event, so I was a bit Shock! I dumped off my bag (left my sunglasses in it, oops) and put my green Macmillan bin liner on and headed to the pen. I found my friends from my running club on the way, which was great. We went our separate ways to different pens, but I stayed with one of them as we'd done all our training together. The weather was not ideal - we had a few rain showers and it was quite windy.

8am came, the sun came out (really wished I hadn't left my sunglasses in the truck) and we were off - it took us about 4 mins to actually get to the start line - there were 4500-ish runners. Myself and my friend started running and according to the Garmin, we were going at about 8:30min/miles so we had to slow down as there's no way we'd have sustained it over 13.1 miles. I actually found the start of the race the hardest. It's so difficult to pace yourself properly and it seems to take me about 3 miles to get into some kind of rhythm. We ran down past the Parliament building and up towards Meadowbank stadium before heading out along Portobello Prom. I passed a colleague from work around about here which was nice! I didn't bother with water at the first stand at 3 miles and got through the 10k mark in 57 mins-ish - that isn't far off my 10k PB, so was a bit concerned about how I'd be feeling near the end. I missed a drink at the 6 mile mark somehow (still not sure how I managed that) but there was another one at 8 miles, so I was ok. Just after that 8 mile water station, there was a huge Macmillan cheer point and as I ran towards them, they started cheering my name (which was on my vest) and I got such a boost! There was a woman just by there giving out jelly babies - what a legend - I'd forgot mine. We passed the finish line at about mile 9 (I think?) which was pretty tough. There were people already finished, but they were cheering us on, which was great. We ran out towards Prestonpans looking for the male runner from our club. We spotted him quite close to the turning point, which ended up being at about 11 miles, so were delighted to see he wasn't that far ahead of us. The next mile 11-12 was my slowest (10:08 I think - certainly my only mile over 10 mins) - partly due to the Lucozade stand and partly due to feeling pretty tired. I grabbed a Lucozade, which was much needed at that point, and kept it with me until the 12 mile mark. The crowds started to gather here and at about 12.5 miles, we sped up a bit. The last half mile was incredible - the support was fantastic and having my name on my vest meant people were cheering me on by name which was just awesome. :)

I can't describe how I felt when my friend and I crossed the finish line together. I was overwhelmed in a 'did we just manage to do that' kind of way. As soon as I stopped running, my legs were like jelly and started to get stiff, so had to have a bit of a stretch. The finish wasn't particularly well organised - we had to walk a wee bit, then round the corner, we got our medals (which are lovely) and a photo taken, then on to get our goody bags and t-shirts. It took a while to get my bag back (that should have been easier) and I had put my Crocs in there so it was so good to take my trainers and socks off and put those on! We bumped into our other clubmates had a big hug, then I went off to the charity village. I was given a big hug from a Macmillan person, then a cup of tea (I love a cup of tea after a run!!) and then was led over to the massage tables. That was fabulous! Grin I sat down and had a chat with some of the other runners, had another cup of tea and a sandwich, then headed out to get the shuttle bus back to Edinburgh. Found my car (yay!) then drove back to Dunfermline. Got a rather excited text from my cousin to say he'd done the marathon in 3 hours 1 minute (!) then had the best shower ever. He got home, we had a pizza, then I drove back up the road. Getting out of the car after 4 hours of driving was, erm, interesting!

I don't actually feel too bad today though. I'm a little tired and my thighs are a bit sore, but I feel a lot better than I had anticipated. No injuries, no blisters and I can actually walk. Grin

So, to summarise, it was a lovely run - a great course, really flat and going along the prom was lovely. The spectators/supporters were brilliant and there was no point at all during the race where I felt uncomfortable. Things I've learned:

-nutrition is so important. I was really careful about what I was eating when in the run up to the race and I've never felt so good during a run!
-putting your name on your shirt is brilliant - the buzz I got from people saying "go on Debs, you're almost there/you're doing so well" etc was fab!
-even if it's raining, take your sunglasses - the sun came out just as we were crossing the start and because it had been raining, the glare off the road was horrible.
-acknowledge the support you get.
-my cousin is amazing.

My splits, if anyone is interested:

1 00:09:35
2 00:09:28
3 00:09:17
4 00:09:09
5 00:09:30
6 00:09:35
7 00:09:35
8 00:09:43
9 00:09:57
10 00:09:53
11 00:09:52
12 00:10:08
13 00:09:54

I'm now looking for my next challenge... I really really enjoyed that yesterday and will definitely do it again.

backwardpossom · 23/05/2011 15:56

Oh dear, that turned into a monster! Well done if you get to the end!
