running and asthma...

now im working shifts i am finding it a real struggle to fit gym time in to my week, i enjoyed running but found it boring alone all the time. DD wont come with me - too embarrassed to run with mum!

dh says he will start running with me - he has gained weight and id be happy to find something to do together, but he has quite bad occupational asthma.

i suggested the couch to 5k system to build up slowly, the last time he did the bleep test with me he nearly keeled over...

is it a good idea for him to try a gentle introduction to running like this do you think?
does anyone else run with asthma or is it just a bad idea?

i run and have asthma... there are quite a few people on here and other forums I read that do...

key things to think about before starting...

1 how well is his asthma controlled now... a quick visit to gp or asthma nurse for a review might be a good starting point... they can check how well he is, inhaler techniques etc and think about whether any different or additional meds would help further

2 definitely start very gently - c25k or similar would be good - but if that is too much too quickly, you can always build up even more slowly 30 seconds running then a walk break etc if needs be...

3 take some reliever 10 -15 mins before going out, and take it with him in case of need - he may find that symptoms come on a few minutes after stopping too... so more reliever if needed after finishing too...

I find a lot of exercises can set off my asthma, but not running.

I think it's because I can completely set my own pace. When I first started running, I found the correct place was slower than walking. So slow you feel like you can go forever. Using this I worked up to a distance, I then worked on speed with the peace of mind that I was physically capable of the distance.

I've never alternated walking/running but I hear it's worked for a lot of people to get into running
