Bike rack for an XC90??

We're thinking of buying a Volvo XC90 but will also need a bike rack to hold 4 bikes. Our options to transport the bikes appear to be on the roof, which isn't practical if I go cycling with DSs, I wouldn't be able to lift the bikes onto the roof. Or, have a tow bar fitted then buy a bike rack which fits onto the tow bar, a far easier option but quite expensive.

Does anyone know of an alternative bike rack for an XC90?

I don't know, but the boot is massive! We can most of our house in ours.

I was going to suggest also that if the boot is a decent size it should be possible to fit at least two into it? Some form of big waterproof sheet might work for days when it's just two of you?

Thanks for replies. We currently have an XC90, without a tow bar, and did try putting the bikes in the boot during school holidays. DS1 and I managed, just, to fit our bikes. DS2 and his bike would not have fitted, thankfully he wasn't with us anyway.
Think we need a bike carrier of some description.

I've just come across this old thread as I also have the same issue of finding a bike rack for the back of my Volvo XC90. I do not want to get a tow bar fitted as I'm likely to sell the car in the next year and the roof is too high to put them on top. Did you find an answer to which bike racks fit on the back?
