Good luck Passmyglass - Am sure you'll do us proud !!

Hello Popsy - glad to hear back is better.

5 miles in the gym today (really should push myself to run more in the gym but I get so bored..) but did push myself to run faster.

MoshiMoshi · 15/02/2011 14:10

Good luck, pass! This week should be all about hydrating and eating correctly and making sure you get any niggles etc seen to so you are in good shape on race day. All the hard work has been done now and you need to let your body rest so you are raring to go on the day!

passmyglass - good luck! I feel nervous for you, but relax and enjoy!

Iread - I just downloaded a 9 week half marathon training plan that is 5 days running. Will see if I can find it. I am going to use it for my June half.

I am at running club tonight, coach has emailed to say we are doing a hill session. EEk. I do enjoy it but know I will be at the back as the elite runners shoot off! Love hills as I know it is shrinking my arse!

Popsy - hello - you are in Newcastle aren't you? Lots of my pals are doing GNR. It is on my to do list at some point in the future.

thecoo · 15/02/2011 19:13

Lots of luck passmyglass - can't wait to hear how it goes. Hope you shake the cold beforehand.

Wheelybug, I can't believe you can do 5 miles on a treadmill! I can't even bring myself to do 5k. I only ever use the treadmill to warm up for other gym stuff or to do intervals if I'm feeling energetic. When I'm outside running the time just flies by but on the treadmill I can't help watching the display and so am aware of every flipping second that goes by...

passmyglassplease · 15/02/2011 19:31

thanks guys, I am looking forward to it but am realising that I have to up my mileage the week after to get to 20 miles training before the London marathon!

Am slightly daunted by the task, but hey ho one can only do one's best.

The running list has grown quite a lot, tis very impressive, am just waiting till after the LM before committing myself to anything else.

It is very inspiring to see how many of us are signing up to lots of different events. Smile

Wheelybug · 15/02/2011 20:05

thecoo - I know, treadmill running is the pits but its the only way I can do 2 out of my 3 runs a week. Mind you, I really want to do 10K on the treadmill but just can't make myself. I can't go to the gym in the school hols because the creche doesn't open (and dd1 is too old anyway) so I do feel a sense of relief when the holidays are approaching - even if it means doing my runs late in the evening as DH doesn't get home until late. Anyway, in Sept dd2 will be at pre-school 3 mornings (sob) and then I plan to only run outside and run 4 x week.

thecoo · 15/02/2011 20:13

V impressed with your dedication wheelybug - most people would just not bother to run :)

Wheelybug · 15/02/2011 20:20

I think it helps that I started running when dd1 was in pre-school, before I got pg with dd2 so I had lots of time to do it (running outside). I then took to my sofa for a year and put on all the weight I'd lost and so was determined to get back to where I was. Which I have (and lost a few more pounds too... although a bit stuck at the mo).

I must say though when I'm really not feeling like it I do give myself a stern talking to that I can do what I like with the rest of my time (although with dd2 in tow !) so 45 mins on the treadmill twice a week isn't too much of a hardship really. I'm also fairly motivated by there having been a lot of v. serious ill health amongst my friends/family inc. DH in the last couple of years and although none of it was caused by being unfit it still makes me want to do what I can to stay fit !

Thanks for the encouragement though.

Goldberry · 15/02/2011 20:24

Good luck, passmyglass! I'm thinking of fitting in an 8k/5 mile race (the Ox5run at Blenheim) before my 10k in May. I was looking for a 5k but couldn't find any nearby. Quite a few people at my running group are keen to do it - it would be nice to have company!

peachsmuggler · 15/02/2011 21:41

Sorry, have missed loads in the thread! So exciting, all the new folk and loads of races planned, welcome everyone!

Just wanted to say good luck to pass, can't wait to hear how it goes!

IreadthereforeIam · 15/02/2011 22:18

Well, I went out this evening with a couple of friends who are doing the half marathon as well, and had a great run - 5.5 miles in 54 minutes (great for me, anyway!). I'm going to do some hills in the morning - maybe not as long a run as tonight. I'm feeling surprisingly good, though - but I suppose the test will be when I get up in the morning and try running up and down hills for 45 minutes!!

DrNortherner · 16/02/2011 07:27

IreadthereforeIam - great run! I love running in a group.

I slept like a log last night after running club and a very tough hill session. We ran from out club house (about 1.5 miles) to a very hilly residential area and ran up a HUGE, steep hill then jogged back down 5 times. Then there was an even steeper hill but much shorter and we had to run up this 5 times, then a jog back to the club house. It was raining but we were all stripping off layers! Loved it.

IreadthereforeIam · 16/02/2011 08:22

DrNortherner - that sounds like quite a tough session - I'm hoping my hills today are going to be kind to me!! I have Pilates tonight, and I need to be able to function in that!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 16/02/2011 09:25

Oooh, lots of good running going on.

I keep thinking I should do some hill repeats, I've been psyching myself up to it for the last 6 months...not quite ready yetGrin

My long run route has a few decent hills and when I run off road it is hilly, but the thought of going up any hill more than once...

Intervals for me yesterday,3 x 1 mile at 10k pace but ended up a bit quicker as I mucked up my garmin and couldn't see my paceConfused Anyway, they averaged 8.50mm with 400m recovery.

Thanks to the kind van driver who went through a massive puddle and soaked me from head to toe, most kind!Grin

Good luck with the Half Pass, hope it goes well for you.

passmyglassplease · 17/02/2011 20:09

hi guys, it looks like I am not going to be able to run this Sunday as the cold, turned into an upper respiratory infection, and I can barely walk without coughing let alone run. Sad

I am so gutted Sad Sad Sad Sad

Wheelybug · 17/02/2011 21:11

Oh poor you passmyglass - what a disappointment. But, better to get yourself all better so you don't miss out on VLM. Hope you feel better soon.

If anyone is interested and doesn't know, the ballot for the Royal Parks half is open. I found myself entering...

peachsmuggler · 17/02/2011 21:51

Oh pass, what a disappointment, that sucks. Like Wheely says, better to miss this than the VLM, but am sure that's not much comfort at the moment. Hope you recover really quickly and can move on with the training.

doyouthink - go on, do some hill repeats!!' You'll love it! Well, maybe not. I used to feel pretty queasy doing them sometimes with running club but you recover pretty quickly afterwards and they are sooooo good for fitness levels.

Not much running here at the moment. Haven't run since last Friday as have had family staying. Tomorrow is yoga and cycling and then will run on Saturday.

Oh and meant to say congratulation popsy on the GNR. I'm definitely going to do that one day!

Goldberry · 18/02/2011 08:08

Oh poor you, passmyglass. It's so disappointing when that happens. Hill repeats, doyouthink? Sounds painful! I'm just thinking I need a bit more structure to my running routine - not sure about hill repeats, but some speed work etc. I think that up till now I've been so amazed at myself actually running at all, that I have contented myself with plodding along rather than trying to get any faster or better really. Time to step it up a bit, maybe...

DrNortherner · 18/02/2011 10:35

I've read that hills are better to do before speed work as hills make you a stronger runner, which you need before you get faster.

Think I need my running club for hill repeats though, not sure I could do them alone. I did 5 repeats but was ready to throw the towel in after 3, only did 2 more because everyone else did Grin

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 18/02/2011 10:41

Really sorry you feel so crap and are going to miss your run passmyglass but improbably best decision - I know how awful it is to not be able to do anything without coughing as that was me from November until recently due to asthma.... Hope you feel better soon - fill your glass with something soothing n comforting .....

Have just been out for a short run with my 12 yo DS as it's a teacher training day, and he is now training for the junior GNR too... Not impressive by everybody else's standards but just ran 2.2 miles with no walking breaks for the first time since early November....

Feels good to not to walk .... Just got a long way to go for my 10k in
June and then for the GNR

IreadthereforeIam · 18/02/2011 12:15

I agree DrNortherner - hill repeats on your own are impossible! I only did 3 sets on Wednesday, but would have given up after 2. My friend dragged me up the 3rd time! (I'm working on doing it more, honest!!).

pass , I'm so sorry to hear you won't be running - all that training, too. I think something 'medicinal' is probably needed Wine. Have one on me!

I went out for a quick run this morning - and spent half the time trying to keep my headphones in! I knew this would happen (I have freakishly small ear holes!), and very frustrating!! Does anyone know of any good, but cheap alternatives? I'm on a miniscule budget, by the way Sad. But now I can see why everyone runs with music - it made it so much better on my own - and I usually really struggle running alone.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 18/02/2011 13:51

Sorry to hear you aren't well pass, so annoying at this point in your training. Make sure you rest plenty and don't puch yourself to get back to running before you are ready.

I shall be doing my own version of a hills session tommorrow. No repeats but I'm on a cutback week so thought I would take a really challenging hilly route and see how I go. It'll be 13 miles and I'll be going from sea level up into the Downs, and then up and down a bit when I get thereConfused I used to cycle the route and it is tough but I feel like I need a change.

Coming back will be easy anywayWink

Iread I use earphones with earclips that hook around my ears. I have a pair with a neck strap which were good but the volume is too low with my new Nano so even if as loud as it goes,I can't hear through them! You are welcome to them if you want them, or anyone else for that matter.

DrNortherner · 18/02/2011 14:32

Iread I have the same problem with headphones, hated it so much I just gave up. I run without music now and frankly I have grown to perfer it.

putthehamster well done, sounds like you are making good progress. And your ds did well! Mine is 8 and he likes to come with me on his bike sometimes.

Not running today. Did an hours walk with the dog this morning and Armed Forces Fitness sesh tomorrow.

Hope you all have a great weekend Smile
