Orm welcome back and well done for getting out there.

Moshi I know what you mean about extra pounds. I do think you can be fit and healthy and heavier but personally I noticed z massive difference when I lost weight a couple of years. Feel much "springier" when running at a lighter weight. How is your mum doing?

I am not planning any races, as would really love to get pregnant again so am just running 3 times a week and ticking over. Very inspired by everyone's race schedules though!

Had amazing run in frosty sunshine yesterday. Very good for the soul.

Happy running y'all!

Wheelybug · 20/01/2011 20:17

Welcome back Orm - well done for doing your best ! I think just keeping at it is sometimes enough.

Peach Good to see you and pleased to hear you sounding positive. Good luck with it all.

Moshi - treadmill sounds awesome. What a great way to carry on training when injured.

SFX - sorry you won't be at Kingston ! But good luck with the surgery etc.

Apologies to harp on about my feet again but having been fine on Monday after my longest run to date, after my 5 mile treadmill run on Tuesday they were really painful yesterday. Today they are ok, although not perfect so I didn't run in the gym but did bike/x-trainer.

If I read descriptions of Plantar Facitis (Sp ?) I don't htink it is this which is a relief. But when do you seek help with an issue ? and do you go to the gp or just straight to physio (Now i'm tpying this I am sure I asked this before when I was having calf issues so I will go back and check if I find it...). Anyway I think I am getting obssessed with my feet and its boring me Grin.

Ormirian · 20/01/2011 20:26

I'd go sooner rather than later wheely. One of my main problems last year was with my feet - I had tendonitis and I had almost despaired or running when I went to a sports physio who helped almost immediately and then to my chiro who helped adjust my posture to releive the stress on that foot. Foot is perfect now - can even wear heels. Sadly my back is shot to bits still.

Wheelybug · 20/01/2011 20:30

Thanks Orm - Was it tendonitis in your feet - can you describe how that was (sorry shouldn't tryand self diagnose but it might get me to take it a bit more seriously) ?

Ormirian · 20/01/2011 20:41

Yes, in my left foot. In the tendons that run down to the toes. It was a constant ache that sharpened to severe pain when exercising or if I tried to wear heels or tighter shoes. Or went upstairs. Or tried to stand on tiptoes Hmm It eased a little with massage or a warm bath but never quite went away. If I was running the pain would just build and build until I had to stop. Actually what it felt like most of all was a tight band across my foot.

Wheelybug · 20/01/2011 20:49

Sounds horrid orm but doesn't sound the same (sounds worse).

Basically my feet just hurt - mostly underneath and some burning pain in my arch. I suppose I should really go and see someone aobut it Grin. I don't want them to tell me to stop running though a I want to do the Kingston run at end of March and I am not up to distance yet so if I have to stop for any length of time I won't make it.

I am thinking it might be something to do with my style on the treadmill as I definitely run v. differently on a treadmill as I run slower. Which is a shame really because I have to do 2/3 of my runs on a treadmill each week.

Ormirian · 20/01/2011 20:52

They can tell you to stop but you don't have to do it Grin And it might be that a little manipulation or some acupuncture would ease it. I know what you mean though - it took me ages to see anyone because I didn't want to accept I had a problem. But trying to run through it and then wait for a few weeks to see if it got better, did me n good in the long run Sad

Wheelybug · 20/01/2011 22:02

Thanks Orm !

MoshiMoshi · 21/01/2011 07:52

Orm - pleased you are keeping on keeping on. Keep us posted with how it goes.

wheely - the diagnosis is better coming from a sports physio (get a recommendation - I can help if you are in my vicinity). I see the GP to get the referral which is needed as I benefit from private health insurance on my husband's medical insurance policy. Otherwise, the GP is pretty much redundant in the process. Get it sorted now. Any twinges are simply early warning signs of issues lurking which will likely make themselves more felt when the mileage or intensity increases.

peach - hoping the fertility fairy makes a visit! Running is a great way of keeping yourself healthy and in touch with yourself.

Rest or recovery day for me after 8 miles steady yesterday. Off to bootcamp for some conditioning!

MoshiMoshi · 21/01/2011 09:13

PS peach - thanks for asking about my mum. She is up and about but the break may need surgery unfortunately. I suppose these things are meant to test us and it will seem a distant memory soon. It is my sister who bears the brunt of looking after her but thankfully she seems to be holding up alright with the extra strain.

OP posts:
Wheelybug · 21/01/2011 19:41

Thanks MOshi - who would you recommend, we're in the same sort of area I think. I too have private medical insurance so was hoping I'd be able to swing it through that !

Glad to hear your mum is a bit better. Fingers crossed for no surgery.

MoshiMoshi · 22/01/2011 13:04

wheely - Can you get to W4? I go to Move in Chiswick (www.moveclinics.com). I have seen a few physios but like them because they are focused on sports(wo)men and are mostly runners themselves. So whereas the last physio I saw would tell me to stop running if I had tendonitis, this lot are more realistic and acknowledge what I want to do. Anyway, if you do see them you can continue to run on their Alter G Trainer! They also offer the whole range of services from podiatry services to biomechanical assessments to sports massages. Um, I have tried most of them.

OP posts:
Wheelybug · 22/01/2011 18:08

Thanks Moshi - Chiswick's not too far away. Will have to think about the logistics though with dd2 being around. Hmmm... I am seeing a friend tonight who has seen physio's for running issues in Wimbledon so will see what she has to say.

All feels fine today so am going to do perimeter of RP tomorrow morning.

Have at least made a plan if I do have to stop running for a bit - will have some personal training sessions in the gym to get me using the gym properly and get a bike. Feel better now I've decided that ! But fingers crossed I won't have to stop.

MoshiMoshi · 22/01/2011 19:16

wheely - If your friend has a local recommendation that seems sensible! Hopefully your run tomorrow should be fine. I may see you as I am planning a short circuit as part of my 12 miles early tomorrow!

marking my place

popsycal · 22/01/2011 20:05

Will you guys have me back? A non-running, injured missing person?

I flounced took a MN break recently but am tentatively dipping back in.

After GNR 2010, life got in the way of running. Then in late November, I started having trouble with my back. I had problems with my pelvis (haha...chuckling to myself as I typed 'elvis' first!) when I was pregnant with ds3 almost three years ago and a few physio sessions put it right.

Anyway. My back got worse and worse and I was back and forward to my GP over the Xmas holidays (3 times I think - gradually getting prescibed stronger pain killers). NHS physio appoinment scheduled for mid-February.

Then, a week gone Friday, I went to pick something up off a chair and my back locked and the most hideous pain shot down my leg and up my back.

Needless to say, I have been signed off work.

HOwever, I have had 3 private physio sessions in the last week and am starting to feel more normal. AT the first session, she said that my pelvis was so misaligned that one leg was over 1cm shorter than the other!! Lots of crunching and prodding later, the horrible intense pain in my pelvis eased but I have been suffering from a really stiff and sore mid and upper back since (physio reckons it was always there but I only noticed once the hideous pelic pain subsided).

Back at physion mid week then hopefully back to work the week after once my pelvis has stabilsed!!!

I knew not running was bad for me!!!

And no, I won't be doing the edinburgh marathon but am still hoping for a GNR ballot place.

Think I may apply for Race for Life too as that is where it all began and I want to get my 5K speed up!!!

So I will be starting from scratch again folks!

MoshiMoshi · 24/01/2011 10:12

Welcome back Popsy although sorry to hear about your injuries - puts me moaning about my feet into perspective !!

I did RP on Sunday (was there between 10-11 MOshi, did you lap me ?) so that's one of my demons done. Did it fairly comfortably too, although ran it with DH which always puts me in a bad mood as I feel I have to run faster etc so have told him I'm never running with him again (although am sure it does me good !).

5 miles on the treadmill today - a bit faster than my usual treadmill pace too.

feet a bit sore though.. ahem..

MoshiMoshi · 25/01/2011 18:00

Sounds promising wheely! Do you think you know what triggers your soreness? It doesn't seem to happen all the time does it?

I ended up doing 13 miles between Putney Bridge and Kew Bridge in the end on Sunday. Average pace 8:11m/m. I don't trust my ankle though! It feels very floppy after spraining it. Early days though so I must work on strengthening it. Rest day yesterday so I did some ballet which involved stretching and getting tights spots released. Then my schedule called for 10 miles today with 5 at half marathon pace. Now, I wasn't sure what pace this would be so experimented a bit as I was on the treadmill. After warming up the first 5 miles, my 5 at pace ended up at 6:48 speeding up to 6:17. While 6:17 felt a bit fast to sustain for 13 miles, 6:48 felt quite easy so I suspect my HM pace is somewhere in between which is exciting as it means I am getting faster! :-)

Happy running everyone and keep on keeping on!

Dillinger · 25/01/2011 18:37

Ooh I didnt know this thread was here!

I started running a few years ago and have always enjoyed it but never got past 5k kind of level for various reasons, mainly no childcare to enable me to go out in the day, and once the dark mornings and evenings come about I dont run unfortunately. I had a running partner over a year ago but she knackered her knee and had to give up Sad

Last year I decided I would train for this years Bath half but gave my place up a few days ago - I hadnt done enough for the reasons above and thought someone else could use the place. Im a bit gutted but it was the right decision and good incentive to aim for it another time.

I cant wait for the lighter mornings, I used to feel amazing running at the start of a new day, the warm sun... sigh! Even if I was only doing a couple of miles Blush

Im going to have a good read of this thread now and get some motivation.

peachsmuggler · 25/01/2011 21:41

Goldberry glad you're getting back into it, your running group sounds just the ticket.

Wheely - add running to the list of things you should never do with your partner, along with learning to drive. Will only end in tearful recriminations!

popsy welcome back lady, it's good to see you! Sounds like you've had a 'mare but well done for getting back on that horse.

Moshi you can't get any faster. I forbid it!! You make me feel like a tortoise. Seriously though, glad the training is going well.

Welcome Dillinger, this is the place you need to be, everybody is always up to inspiring stuff, so lots to motivate you. Good to have new blood too, I feel we've all been kind of quiet on here lately. If you find a race you want to do then add yourself to our list!

Have run a fair amount of short runs in last 2 weeks and also cut down on food (after terrible Xmas chocolate coin diet) and when I weighed myself at swimming this morning had not lost a blimmin thing since 2 weeks ago! Gutted. Am only a couple of pounds over what I want to be but would really like to get back to my fighting weight so guess I will have to run a bit more!!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 25/01/2011 21:43

I'm back too. Struggling to do 5k at the moment but sticking at it.

sfxmum · 25/01/2011 21:47

hello

did 6miles along the river from Chiswick Bridge to Richmond Lock on Sunday
very slow and slightly uncomfortable as knee has been bothering me and my calf went funny too
still it was lovely to be out, seemed everyone in West London was running along the same path

there are some speedy folk out there

sfxmum · 25/01/2011 21:48

and running with husband is a big no no atm [ghmm]
