Brexit Mega Thread 16 – Who's Next?

We are approaching the 6th anniversary of Brexit, or I suppose the 5th, if you count the period of transition as "in."

Since then, the world has endured Covid-19, seen war in Ukraine and many other things. Brexit has had reduced salience in the minds of many people recently.

When digesting the latest setbacks to befall the elite who govern our islands, a phrase I keep returning to, is “OK, so now do you get it?”

Brexit is undoubtedly the biggest “OK, so now do you get it?” moment directed at our leaders in my life. It’s surely the largest since 1979, since the Labour victory of 1945? or even since the advent of universal suffrage?

The U.K. local elections in 2026, and subsequent national ones, could see a big increase in support for the Green Party and Reform U.K. Two parties with more different attitudes to European integration could scarcely be found, so Brexit’s salience in the U.K. may rise again soon
.
There are many electoral contests in progress or coming across Europe too (the Netherlands and France, for example) which will be worth paying attention to. Maybe the next questions we will face are less about "what next?" and more about "who's next?"

Relations between mainland Europe and the UK remain a worthy topic for discussion, whoever leads the nations of Europe, or leads the E.U. itself.

And if you think that makes up for the millions of corporation tax that the patriot should be paying to the country he professes to love, you're an imbecile...

@DuncinToffee

Loss of HNWI in the UK is attributed to:

• High taxes
• Anti-prosperity culture
• Abolition of Non Dom status

@MaybeNotBob

Dyson shares are all held by James Dyson and members of his family. There are no external shareholders or public shares.

Corporation tax is paid from company profits, not from individuals who own, or have shares in, the company. Dyson was the sixth largest taxpayer in the UK in 2024.

That's not an answer to my question.

My heart bleeds for those poor non doms.

MaybeNotBob · 17/12/2025 20:23

Answering your own question as usual...

EEexpat · 17/12/2025 20:31

@DuncinToffee

If you read the Adam Smith Institute in full, it makes the following comments about Brexit and loss of millionaires:

Since the 2016 Brexit vote, there has been marked volatility in the number of liquid millionaires in the UK. In 2015, the UK was home to 609,900 liquid millionaires, yet by 2022 there were 612,300. Now, there are 8% fewer than in 2007. Brexit has provided challenges to the certainty of the UK’s investment and immigration policies, however there has been a general settling point of around 600,000 since 2015 for the number of liquid millionaires. We can conclude from this that Brexit has not had a significant impact on the presence of liquid millionaires in the UK.

DuncinToffee · 17/12/2025 20:40

So Brexit hasn't exactly attraced millionaires to the UK then?

Guess the promises made were not worth much after all.

Good news about the UK rejoining Erasmus

EEexpat · 17/12/2025 20:46

@Peregrina

The last year UK took part in Erasmus was 2020. Approx. 10,000 UK went to other countries out of a total population of 2 million UK students. That’s 0.5%. Tells me that the other 99.5% aren’t interested.

You missed out the more than 8000 trainees

You'd rather close off those opportunities?

EEexpat · 17/12/2025 20:54

@DuncinToffee

So Brexit hasn't exactly attraced millionaires to the UK then?

It had neglible effect in either direction. The increase in number leaving since 2024 are attributable to Labour policies regards:

Higher personal taxes (even though they said it would not happen)

Capital gains tax

Inheritance tax

Possible wealth tax on assets over £10 million

In 2020, only 0.5% of UK students took part in the Erasmus scheme. So, I guess the other 99.5 % were not interested.

EEexpat · 17/12/2025 22:38

Who cares? The figure Starmer has agreed is double what Johnson said was too expensive.

Labour stood on a manifesto of no tax increases. Since Labour took office, both budgets have increased taxes. If that’s not a lie, what is?

DuncinToffee · 17/12/2025 22:40

Brexit was the biggest lie

Do you not listen to yourself?

EEexpat · 18/12/2025 07:58

@DuncinToffee

Brexit was the biggest lie

If correct, why have UK MPs not:

demanded another referendum?

demanded a vote on whether or not to trigger article 49 to make an application to rejoin the EU?

DuncinToffee · 18/12/2025 08:30

You are not denying it

Otherwise still stuck on repeat.

EEexpat · 18/12/2025 11:03

No comment made in either direction, but questions as to why the current parliament is not talking about a rejoin.

DuncinToffee · 18/12/2025 11:16

The WTTC employs between 11 and 50 people. I am sure that will make zero dent to the 10.5% unemployment rate in Spain.

UK unemployment is currently 5.1. Up from the 4.4% in June 2024 when conservatives were in power, but still less than half that of Spain.
