Brexit mega thread part 13: All eyes on Ireland

With the Windsor framework up & running, and the DUP having a "you could set your calendar by it" hissy fit, but Irish unification refusing to keep it's head down, what next in the long running sage of UK vs. the real world ?

In this we are being proven correct.

So, were is your evidence? What happened to the:

500K to 800K jobs that would be lost just by a vote leave as stated in the UK treasury report?
The 4% shrink in GDP by quarter 3 in 2018 whilst the UK was still in the EU?
The property crash?
The emergency budget that would destroy the UK?

WHY the hell should I provide any evidence to you unless you will pay me directly the €2000 I have lost due to YOUR (leaver) vote. If you thought that these projections would occur overnight then show me evidence that shoes and food got CHEAPER the day after the referendum that some politicians were promising. (mogg)

Peregrina · 15/07/2024 15:26

Rees-Mogg was asked what his proudest achievement was as an MP. He said it was getting approval for an expensive drug for children with some rare disease. Which is perfectly laudable, but why wasn't he claiming Brexit?

The Brexiters on these threads now bring to mind the statement ' Operation a success but the patient died.'

SerendipityJane · 15/07/2024 15:34

Suggesting closing this forum isn't "shutting down debate" which can continue anywhere else on MN. Maybe chat, or politics.

It's just a reflection of that fact that now Brexit is a done deal, then anything to do with it is mere business as usual.

This forum was set up to keep Brexit threads off all the other boards.
It served its purpose.
These threads could safely migrate to politics without the world ending.

VimtoVimto · 15/07/2024 16:15

@GlobeTrotter2000 Farage had whinged enough about leaving the EU, it is reasonable to assume a reputable politician would have a vision about how to fill the void, and would be statesmanlike enough to share that with the government irrespective of whether he is PM or not.

DuncinToffee · 16/07/2024 12:06

We've no bespoke trade deal with the USA, for example. I suspect that has more to do with the current occupant of the White House than the UK Govt. The next tennant might be more amenable.

Hmm, good luck with that.

SerendipityJane · 16/07/2024 12:12

We've no bespoke trade deal with the USA, for example.

Wasn't on the referendum as I recall ? What fucking idiot thought it was ?

I think it was Obama who said 'back of the queue'

Peregrina · 16/07/2024 12:29

I can't imagine that another Trump presidency would put us at the front of the queue.

LouiseCollins28 · 16/07/2024 13:05

Not with Starmer in charge, No I agree that's unlikely.

DuncinToffee · 16/07/2024 13:10

Better to focus on nearby allies/markets then

Peregrina · 16/07/2024 13:43

The Brexiters knowledge of geography isn't all that good. They probably don't realise how far away the countries around the Pacific are.

Talkinpeace · 16/07/2024 15:05

Anybody thinking Trump will do trade deals with the UK has not read Project2025

Anybody thinking Biden will do trade deals with the UK forgets "I'm Irish"

borntobequiet · 16/07/2024 15:18

It’s not in the interest of the USA to make any sort of trade deal with us. We’ve been told so very clearly, multiple times. They have bigger fish to fry.

SerendipityJane · 16/07/2024 15:36

We are out of the EU. As promised. Where does this fairy tale US trade deal come from ? Was it on the referendum ? Did any party promise it ? No, and no.

If Brexiteers feel they have been sold a pup, then they'll just have to accept it. The will of the people has been followed. To the letter. We are out of the EU. As promised. A rare shining example of the public getting what the public wanted.

If there is one thing I can't stand it's these whining Leavers who refuse to accept the democratic will of the people. Fucking traitors.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 17/07/2024 08:35

@IItisymoi then show me evidence that shoes and food got CHEAPER the day after the referendum that some politicians were promising. (mogg)

What JRM said was that tariffs on; food, clothing and footwear are high and represent the largest expenditure for those that earn the least. He did not say that prices of those items would reduce the day after the referendum.

If you care to trawl back through the posts, you will see that you have made this statement before, but when asked to provide evidence you have failed.

Food and energy costs are increasing around the World. Key drivers are listed as:

COVID
Conflicts
Climate change

If you have evidence that the vote to leave on 23 June 2016 was the cause of the above events, I would be interested to see it.

Spiking food prices have made headlines around the world this year, from eggs in the US to vegetables in India.

borntobequiet · 17/07/2024 09:00

Well, duh.

IItisymoi · 17/07/2024 10:00

It seems that 'globe' fails to understand the need for BENEFICIAL trade deals because ALL countries can trade at basic WTO trade rule levels but it is up to individual trade negotiators to get BENEFICIAL arrangements in place, a process taking years.
The real point is that the UK has had 8 years to get stuck into proper trade negotiations but so far has practically nothing to show for it and other aspects of Brexit are showing themselves which myself and others on this thread discussed 7 or more years ago. I think it is time to quit MN bcause it is a LOT easier discussing things in a foreign language than trying to get any sense from the likes of Globe.

LouiseCollins28 · 17/07/2024 10:04

Yes the USA have bigger fish to fry. Bigger fish than Europe even by the sounds of the RNC speechifying.

"Sold a pup" is not something I've ever said about Brexit.
