With the Windsor framework up & running, and the DUP having a "you could set your calendar by it" hissy fit, but Irish unification refusing to keep it's head down, what next in the long running sage of UK vs. the real world ?

@pointythings That wins the 'least relevant load of rehashed and misrepresented tosh' of the month award.

Isn't that a bit premature? It's only the 8th today.

Honestly, if you can top that last lot, I'll give you another award.

Peregrina · 08/05/2024 20:26

Speed limiters are a safety issue as, if you read the article provided, it's estimated that a third of road fatalities are due to excessive speed. Nothing to do with being in or our of the EU.

GlobeTrotter2000 doesn't do irony, it seems.

It does seem to have escaped her or his notice that we have Brexited, and did so four years ago.

prettybird · 08/05/2024 21:22

I thought we'd already dealt with the speed limiter story Confused

Our Conservative Brexity government voluntarily chose to ratify this law into UK law Shock not that they shouted from the rooftops that it came initially from the EU Hmm

HannibalHeyes · 08/05/2024 21:29

Basically, our sovereign Brexit worshipping government realised that we would be importing most of our cars through the EU, and would have to accept their rules.

Nothing says sovereignty like accepting other blocs rules...

Peregrina · 08/05/2024 21:51

No one was trying to argue that speed limits and obeying them were Not a Good Thing. What we were pointing out is that "Taking back Control" to the Brexiters appears to mean become rule takers.

prettybird · 08/05/2024 22:07

My car, a 2018 reg, is not sophisticated enough to have speed regulators or warnings. However, if we're using the SatNav which I try not to do , it does have a visual warning on the display if/when dh one of us inadvertently Wink goes above the speed limit Halo

Glasgow is currently consulting on introducing a default 20 mph speed limit throughout the city, with certain routes being exempted. That'll be fun Grin

ohmigod @prettybird the whole city?! We’ve had 20mph introduced on some local roads and a) you feel like you’re crawling along, made worse by b) nobody else adhering to it. Now waiting for the inevitable speed cameras to go up and we’ll realise the reduced speed is just another revenue stream.

PS Surely Globe is cut n paste Clav reincarnated? But heartening that at least one Brit is happy with Brexit.

Globe is but a pale imitation of Cut'n'Pasteova. At least they would post something vaguely related to the point.

And I'm not convinced "Brit" is entirely correct either...

@DrBlackbird - here's the proposed map.

https://glasgowgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/instant/interactivelegend/index.html?appid=1f697be870c6448f80c8a0c41782294a

The city centre has been 20mph for a while - but I don't think it's anywhere near well enough signposted as such Hmm

Our street is currently an advisory 20mph and I do make a point of driving at that speed along it - but I'm only going half way along it Wink Looking at the map, it's not down as currently 20mph but the area adjacent is, which I drive into/through regularly and I've never seen any signposts saying 20mph Confused

For some reason, was reminded of some posters here yesterday, with a local FB posting.

Someone posted someone had their RM parcel with a picture of their holding the notification card.

As of 3 hours later not a squeak about the parcel, but a lively discussion (and questions) about the OPs nail polish. Which I concede was striking. But no help to the problem.

Just to remind ourselves of all the winning going on...

I always maintained it was stupid of Brexiteers to assume that the world would be exactly the same in 5,10,15 years as it was in 2016. But once again we see that intelligence is very much a function of imagination (or ice versa).

Do you have a share token for that article? The old technique to get round the paywall of searching on the exact title no longer seems to work.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 09/05/2024 16:13

@DrBlackbird But heartening that at least one Brit is happy with Brexit.

So, you have discussed Brexit with everyone in the UK who is over 18? That's about 48 million people.

@SerendipityJane But once again we see that intelligence is very much a function of imagination (or ice versa).

Eligibility to vote in the UK is described in the link

Types of election, referendums, and who can vote: Overview - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Eligibility

Whether you can vote in an election or referendum will depend on:

  • your age
  • your nationality
  • where you live
  • whether you’ve registered to vote

Social class, wealth or education are immaterial. Rightly so too.

It's basically saying that the EU is splurging on defence big time, and a lot of UK companies will be locked out because they can't satisfy the "made in EU" part of the security requirements. (Think Galileo).

Also their spending power will put them at the front of the queue with suppliers, while the UK - who are only equipping the UK - will probably get second dibs.

It was really pretty nail polish though. All talk of the parcel seemed to be forgotten.

But but but, are sovrintee! (Sorry for the Daily Heil link)

"In a letter to Foreign Office minister David Rutley, committee chairman Sir Bill Cash wrote: 'If agreed as you outlined to us, allowing current Schengen checks to be administered by [EU] Frontex border guards at the airport would erode UK sovereignty to the point of meaninglessness.
'From your evidence, we suspect that the UK Government is prepared to concede an arrangement that will leave Gibraltar's frontier British in all but name.
'The practical implications of this are seismic. You were unable to reassure us that UK nationals and Gibraltarians, wishing only to enter Gibraltar, would not have to undergo Schengen checks.'"
