Difficult to know what he wants since he’s being vague.

True.

There were rumours end of last year that the Tories were considering trying for a Swiss style arrangement, but there was too much pushback. I reckon Labour have learned from that.

Frankly, Labour are just flailing. They need an arrangement that improves the UK's economic situation, is acceptable to the EU and won't turn off pro-Brexit voters. Which to my mind is a unicorn.

I often wondered if the Palace had been contacted

I'm afraid Starmer is in cakeism territory here. There is no renegotiation to be had. A bit of tinkering around the edges is not going to help the cost of living crisis. He needs to stop bloody ruling things out! SM and CU are the absolute minimum we need to pull this country out of the mire, and hopefully that would include accepting rules about shit in rivers etc...

Play the game !

Whatever Starmer is up to isn't based in reality. UK political discourse - as we should all know by now - isn't reality based. It's ideology based.

I suspect by talking the talk Starmer is quietly luring the Tories into a position where they will either have to say what you have. That the UK-EU TCA isn't up for renegotiation (and therefore there is fuck all they can do either) or into a position where they one-upman (emphasis on "man" by the way) ship to promised "whatever Labour say, only more so".

The problem is the Tories are bound by their own hyperbole and headbangers to be unable to even dream about closer EU ties. Labour ... less so.

I thought we had done gone with taking political statements at face value ?

For example Liz Truss handing out pearls of economic wisdom at this time is highly unlikely to be connected to the well being of the UK and almost guaranteed to be about the well being of Liz Truss. And with the ever shrinking pool of potential Tory party MPs the next election, she may well be trebling her odds of becoming leader of the Tories again.

I agree with the criticism of LK offered by Patrick Howse.

I was aghast to see the BBC documentary on the political turmoil being promoted as fare to sit back and enjoy as if it were some sort of amusing circus that had no impact on the daily lives of millions. "Look at us, eh!"

Jackydaytona · 18/09/2023 16:27

Yep

"We're mad, we are!"

More on Starmer and the EU / single market.

The story is in the Indy but here's the BBC precis.

'Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is to rule out any bid for the UK to join a revamped EU as an "associate member" if his party wins the next election, according to the i. The paper says the proposal - originally made by French President Emmanuel Macron - would give the UK and others the chance to join an outer tier, which would include single market membership, but that Sir Keir is set to reject the plan as a "non-starter"."

Indy https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/britain-eu-rejoin-associate-member-brexit-b2414791.html

The newspaper's story says the Tories would reject the idea too, but 1) we know that, since the party has too many Brexiteer loons and 2) that's irrelevant if Labour win the next GE, as seems likely.

That's just reheating what was offered to Cunt Cameron back in 2015. Which was rejected out of hand (and is going to be again) since it placed the UK in the "second class" EU circle.

Don't they know who we are ?

Because I have zero respect for any major politician today, I suspect it's more by accident, but Starmers actions will have to provoke a response from the Tories. And right now, that's something they really would rather not. With fuck all sympathy from me they have managed to paint themselves into a situation where they will lose support whatever they do. As the developing dumping of green policies shows.

Chersfrozenface · 20/09/2023 09:58

I absolutely guarantee that Labour will also have to postpone the milestones to Net Zero.

Its policy "A Stronger Green and Digital Future" has a list of what the UK needs in terms of electric cars, domestic heating, public transport, low carbon electricity generation and so on, and a paucity of detail on how those needs will be met and Net Zero goals attained..

countrygirl99 · 20/09/2023 10:20

It's a guarantee that the car one will need to be postponed whoever is in power as the current government hasn't ensured there will be an adequate infrastructure. They've basically left it to the market and crossed their fingers. So for villages like mine where there are quite a few properties where charging at home isn't possible there is not even a hint of a plan and my Tory MP can't enlighten me on what the government is doing to ensure there is.

If Labour have selected a candidate for your constituency, why not ask what their plan is for charging in your village?

You could ask all the candidates, but if the polls are correct, and Labour form the next government, it's their plans that matter.

If the answer involves words like "need" (we already know that) or "encourage" (how? who?) rather than concrete plans and specified investment sums, I wouldn't be holding my breath..

countrygirl99 · 20/09/2023 11:24

Countrywide we need to have at least outline plans in place now. If Labour get elected in 2025 they will run out of time whatever they would want to do. If the government put plans in place before the end of the year with a mighty push there's a slim chance they could get there. But they aren't giving it even a slight nudge so it won't happen whoever gets in at the next election.

HannibalHeyes · 20/09/2023 12:48

And nobody seems to have asked how people living in flats are going to charge their electric vehicles...

SerendipityJane · 20/09/2023 12:50

Meanwhile, WFH is a massive boost to reducing carbon emissions.

In case anyone doesn't know. There's a 'rejoin EU ' march in London on Saturday.

Kendodd · 20/09/2023 12:58

And the weather is due to be good.

HannibalHeyes · 20/09/2023 13:59

I'll be there.

Kendodd · 20/09/2023 14:02

Me too hopefully.
I have to have an operation on Thursday but am hoping that won't stop me going.

FrankieStein403 · 20/09/2023 14:31

I live in a flat and have an ev - charging is more expensive than a home charger but otherwise not a problem - what do you think is the issue?

Well for me it's that the nearest charger is 8 miles away and there are none at the 2 nearest supermarkets.

Jackydaytona · 20/09/2023 15:18

Wish I could make it
Went to the 2019 one and it was an amazing day

Interesting article by Katya Afler on thd BBC News site:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-66872827

Starmer may say he wants to renegotiate thd Brexit deal, but this isn't going to happen.

"Eyebrows were raised across Europe at his suggestion of renegotiating the Brexit deal, however.

There is little EU appetite for that kind of time-consuming, old wounds-reopening overhaul right now."
