Hi,

Longtime lurker and poster (under various nn) on Westminstenders and these threads.

I'm afraid the other thread op pissed me off a lot so here's another option for those of us that want one.

Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and good luck for 2022.

I was going to add that I know that India uses metric measurements, but they also have their own numbers such as crores - which I can't now remember for the life of me what they are.

DGRossetti · 01/01/2022 14:25

@Peregrina

And for a country which wishes to be GLOBAL - to deliberately go back to using measurements which the rest of the world bar the USA has moved on from, is STUPID.
Brexiteers have no desire to see Britain GLOBAL. Or even global. For sci-fi nerds who have read "The City and The Stars" they are the old-style Disaparians who want to keep themselves safely locked away form any hint of anything "furrin".

They're running the shop now.

People never believe me, but I once worked with a 35 year old whose point of pride was - despite living in Warwickshire -that they had never (not even on a school trip) been to "that London". In fact if it wasn't for the fact a colleague was equally disbelieving then at 12 years distance* I might have convinced myself I had imagined it.

*So they are 47 now, as their LinkedIn confirms ...

Mind you DB says it's not that unusual to meet folk where he lives who have never left the state (Tennessee).

Have they been out of the Shire?

There are plenty round here who never have.

DGRossetti · 01/01/2022 14:29

They worked for a year in the US. I shit you not.

DGRossetti · 01/01/2022 14:31

Even all the ex-colonies use km(/h) for road signs.

borntobequiet · 01/01/2022 14:58

I would boycott a butcher who messed around with Imperial measures now.

I used to only shop there rarely, and then maybe just for one slice of ham for a sandwich. Since they went imperial I mostly go in so I can make some flippant remark, eg “does anyone actually understand these silly old measures any more?” I’m funny, me.

borntobequiet · 01/01/2022 15:00

I taught in a school in Warwickshire where, when I told Y10 that I was going shopping in Birmingham at the weekend, they warned me to be careful as it was a dangerous place.

prettybird · 01/01/2022 15:13

I would go into an "imperial measures" butcher and make a point of asking for, say, 300g or 700g of mince Hmm. Deliberately choosing amounts that don't have a close imperial equivalent Wink And insist that I want no more and no less than that amount Grin .... and if they said they couldn't serve me in grams, I'd leave Grin

Peregrina · 01/01/2022 15:16

Good idea prettybird - we could really have fun with this.

It puts me in mind of my grandmother, who was given short measure by her butcher during the War. Post war she never patronised that shop again.

It's exactly one year since we got Brexit done. Yes, we've lost £12bn/month in trade and the freedom to live and work in 27 other countries, but we've gained crown signs on pint glasses, galloping inflation and turds in our rivers!
Cheers!

I am reminded of being told that a common "trick" in driving tests was to ask for the stopping distances that weren't on the back of the Highway Code, but inside it ...

DGRossetti · 01/01/2022 16:06

All our local "butchers"* are universally crap, so no point in a boycott there.

*See also: chippies ...

the rest of the world is refusing to use the superior British Imperial measurements

I'd be surprised if trading standards still had a stock of standard weights to check imperial scale calibrations - might be fun to report suspicion of incorrect tares :)

FrankieStein403 · 01/01/2022 16:43

I once worked with a 35 year old whose point of pride was - despite living in Warwickshire -that they had never (not even on a school trip) been to "that London".

There are still people in my birthplace (small northern town) who've never been outside the county.

Currently living in Herts - there's quite a few 'londoners' who've never ventured beyond the M25, and many, including my partner and family, who get the screaming heeby-jeebies when we cross it northbound.

It will be on the Type plating attached to the scales.

I used to work for Avery Berkel. At one point there wasn't much I didn't know about UK metrology - and EU environment laws regarding landfill.

I CBA to check, but I bet the UK government has quietly appropriated the EU landfill tax for itself. Just remember that, if they suddenly try and sell another £10/tonne levy (if memory serves).

Of course EU plated lorries will still need to be weighed in metric. As will any UK plated lorries - no matter what arcane system we might be using ourselves.

That said, I can see a money tap coming into view for reskilling everyone under 55 in imperial again.

Updated 159 page guide to importing and exporting from the EU published yesterday.

Previously, it was obviously;

  1. Put goods into van
  2. Drive van away

This is excellent Brexit news. Reducing red tape by not having all kinds of rules imposed by Brussels making British business great again.

It does my poor pedant head in when looking at benefits that are being listed. The crown on pint glasses is not a benefit, it's a feature. The fact that the crown is there derives no actual benefits that I can see - other than maybe a warm and fuzzy feeling amongst those that way inclined. So, something else that is not a benefit.

Just means we have to have 2 types of glass if we want to sell to the EU.

Unfortunately this country is being run by incredibly stupid men and women. Decision making on the basis of either nanny’s way were best or nah nah I told you is mind numbingly stupid.

Or…is that just how lizard’s think with cold weather leading to sluggish brain waves?? Hmm I’m finding the latter a more comforting line of thought than the former.

borntobequiet · 01/01/2022 18:11

It would have to be a lot of money. I’ve spent the last eight years covering metric/Imperial conversions. It’s hard work. A great many people think a mile is a unit in the metric system because of the m. And of course, there are historical reasons for why it’s so called - just not the ones they think.
I didn’t have to, but I liked to cover fathoms, chains and furlongs as well.

Rods perches and poles to you.

Anyway it proved an amusing way to push a point recently when I did point out that level 2 and level 3 qualifications would need to be amended to include the use of imperial again to the course tutors. Their response was best summarised as "fuck that". Possibly because they were both under 40 and wouldn't know a hundredweight if it hit them in the head.

Railway locations are still denoted in miles and chains in Britain. Look up Engineer's Line References.

I mean it's not as if EU rules allowed Ireland to put a harp on pint glasses,
Oh, wait........
