Hi,

Longtime lurker and poster (under various nn) on Westminstenders and these threads.

I'm afraid the other thread op pissed me off a lot so here's another option for those of us that want one.

Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and good luck for 2022.

from a local delicatessen

Hi there DGR,

Thanks for your email and unfortunately we don’t stock that and there will be fewer meat and fish and animal products coming in from 1st of Jan as 100% of checks are introduced.

DrBlackbird · 20/12/2021 14:26

I had to fill out a customs form for a friend’s present to France and found myself thinking yet again ‘just what benefits have we got out of leaving the EU? Just one firm, tangible one. Not some bullshit ‘make our own laws’ … benefit. Just one

And it’ll be even more shit come 1st January when those checks come in. Angry

can someone explain the deal with oversize pigs?

why do they need to be culled? can't they be made into sausages differently?

I imagine it was part of the Australia deal ?
FrankieStein403 · 20/12/2021 17:37

R4 this lunchtime looked at the pig problem - it's because downstream - supermarkets etc - need consistent sized cuts - ie they can't handle lots of different weight cuts

I heard that as well, but there is still the option to mince the meat and make sausages instead surely. or to freeze the meat. or sell to catering that can use bigger cuts?
purplesequins · 20/12/2021 17:44

I'm sure producers looked into various options, but I am curious why waste is preferred to processing in a different way.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 20/12/2021 17:49

There's a market for even culled sows so the meat is definitely usable, whatever the size. I suspect it's mainly the the fact that the pigs would have to be fed and housed until they could be butchered and even then there'd be a huge glut of meat fit only for pies and sausages.

Farmers only deal with animals at a certain point in their life, they then get moved on to the next farmer who does the next age range. If the farmer can't move them on because of a blockage further up the chain then they're stuck with animals bigger than they equipped to deal with, while the farmer further down the chain tries move their stock over.

The main blockage seems to be butchers at the abbatoirs so the farmer stuck with the bigger pigs than they normally have can't just send them there instead. So they're stuck with pigs they can't move on, are too big for their set up, and who are eating them out of house and home. The only choice they have is to slaughter them but then the meat can't go into the food chain as it won't have been through the safety process that abbatoirs have.

Thank you @BringBackCoffeeCreams for that succinct explanation. (Though I don’t share the love for coffee creams, sorry.)

I dread to think what impact this would have on the UK:

You can tell it’s nearly Christmas when the conversation turns to confectionery 🍬

rifling · 21/12/2021 07:33

Another Brexit bonus - I'm in Italy and my local supplier of baked beans has said they can't get them anymore - or indeed anything at the moment from the UK. Shock

While farmers cull oversized pigs, meat seems to have disappeared from my son's school cantine. The menu last week was: Mon: quorn bolognese, Tue: ramen with quorn, Wed: chili con quorn, Thu: quorn tacos... Hmm

inews.co.uk/news/politics/brexit-australia-trade-deal-94m-hit-uk-farming-forestry-and-fishing-government-study-reveals-1361797

The post-Brexit trade deal signed with Australia last week will see British agriculture, forestry and fishing take a £94m hit, the Government’s own impact assessment shows.

There is also an expected £225m hit to the semi-processed food sector, which includes tinned products, as part of a “reallocation of resources within the economy”.

We have sovereignty, taken back control of our borders, are no longer under the yoke of laws made in Brussels and have £350million a week to spaff on Boris' mates dubious businesses.

I'm stocking up on frozen fruit and vegetables...

More winning for fishermen

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-humber-59748581

The owners of the UK's biggest trawler have described a new government deal to win back fishing rights following Brexit as "too little, too late".
Hull-based Kirkella has been mothballed since December 2020 after the UK lost the right to fish in Norwegian waters.
UK Fisheries said they were "absolutely devastated for the crew" as the new quotas offered just one week's work.

Peregrina · 22/12/2021 12:11

Obviously they need to set Liz Truss or her successor on to negotiate a better deal! The only problem of course, is that Norway isn't half way around the world. Maybe a deal to fish in Japanese waters could be possible? Grin
