Hi,

Longtime lurker and poster (under various nn) on Westminstenders and these threads.

I'm afraid the other thread op pissed me off a lot so here's another option for those of us that want one.

Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and good luck for 2022.

I am hoping that one branch of my family will be able to get from France on Sunday.

DGRossetti · 16/12/2021 18:22

Apparently Americans are too thick to realise what an opportunity Brexit is for them. Or so Penny Mordaunt told them.

www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/tory-minister-penny-mordaunt-us-brexit-trade-305086/

I am sure Americans will write to their representatives to make sure they don't miss out. After all - cheese is serious business these days.

DGRossetti · 16/12/2021 18:25

Also, many thanks to those offering to help with DWs buggy buggy Grin. Our MP has now picked up the issue so I'll hang fire with them as they've asked to deal with the minister on our behalf.

Storminamu · 16/12/2021 19:35

Maybe a piece in the local paper?

Seems the people of Shropshire have organised their own Progressive Alliance - brilliant news

IpanemaPeaHen · 17/12/2021 07:01

Amazing result in Shropshire by election.

It may not be the end for Johnson straight away, and goodness knows there’s no one remotely decent, to replace him. But it finally seems his blustery, lying, cheating ways are catching up with him.

Opal8 · 17/12/2021 07:02

I'd hope for De Pfeffles exit but....

On a Brexit thread it is probably worth pointing out that North Shropshire voted 60% for Leave and are now represented by a pro-EU party.

There is an argument that it suits the opposition now to keep Johnson in power for a bit longer, don't give whoever replaces him long before the next GE, that way the election will still be about Johnson and his lies, cronies and sleaze.

And yet more food for Tory thought ...

www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/dec/16/uk-public-dont-want-perennial-fights-of-a-permanent-brexit-with-eu-report

Suggests that an opposition party with a much less aggressive attitude that can offer a lasting partnership with the EU might gain traction.

I am listening very carefully for the reverse ferreting from Tory Brexiteers in the coming days.

Sir Roger Gale is gently putting the knife in and twisting it about on the radio. I wonder how many letters he has had from his fellow MPs.

I suspect N Shropshire very much driven by fury among the farming community at the wanton betrayal and destruction of their sector after being excessively lied to about Brexit, as well as everything else.

Not helped by the Tories having a candidate that appeared to be scared of sheep at a livestock market...
DGRossetti · 17/12/2021 07:53

I wonder what Covid did to the Tories voter base in Shropshire too ? Because I suspect that private Tory polling shows that their voter base are probably disproportionately in the freedom/no vaccine demographic. It's hard not to read the subtext of "Get Boosted Now" as a plea to those who might be inclined to vote Tory.

Seems not many have (yet) picked up on the above-average turnout. Almost as if out of spite voters kicked away any excuse that this is somehow an accident of numbers. People turned up specially to vote Lib Dem.

DrBlackbird · 17/12/2021 08:08

It would suit the opposition to keep Johnson in power but Tory HQ will be thinking ‘when’, not ‘if’ to get rid at this stage. How can he possibly stay on now, but when to move him with the least possible damage to the party will be the issue. That’s their problem.

Agree with Opal8 that our collective problem is who the hell to replace him? Can’t be Raab after his disastrous PR in mishandling the fall of Kabul. The wisest choice for them would be Hunt can’t believe I’m saying that but hopefully they’ll go for Sunak, Patel, Truss, Gove or JRM as there’s a good chance one of those would stumble before the next election to break the Tory hold over the nation’s electorate.

Hunt much less likely to stumble and speaks like a reasonable adult when he’s interviewed. However, he voted Remain. Yes he later insisted he’d vote Leave in a 2nd referendum, he’s a politician and read the mood of his Party…but will those pro-EU sentiments render him in the eyes of the party faithful as not a sufficiently ‘hard man’ for future EU negotiations?

Oh… I just had a really horrible thought. It couldn’t ever be Frost could it? 😱

North Shropshire, particularly farming communities in North Shropshire are deeply conservative and insular, it is not unusual to find people who think that Shrewsbury is a big place and best avoided. There is a deeply held suspicion of outsiders. That drove the Brexit vote and probably also drove them to stay at home rather than vote for a candidate and party that are outsiders and do not appear to share their conservative values.
countrygirl99 · 17/12/2021 08:27

JRM? A tasted a little bit of sick in my mouth.

Wouldn't it be nice to move from the clown to someone who is stuck in the 19th century. At least we would still have someone to laugh at, and we can't expect any of the likely candidates to actually do the best thing for the country so they may as well entertain us.
DGRossetti · 17/12/2021 08:58

That drove the Brexit vote and probably also drove them to stay at home rather

er, a 46% turnout suggests the opposite. And if it turns out to disguise a massive stay-at-home sentiment amongst Tories then this story is even worse .....

DoctorTwo · 17/12/2021 09:02

That by-election result was an early Xmas present for the people of North Shropshire. I'm astonished that Labour voters actually switched to the Lib Dems in droves, normally they don't think that much in that constituency. (I grew up near there, so I know the area)

Opal8 · 17/12/2021 09:19

JRM?

Just what the country needs as PM: the ghost of a Victorian undertaker 🤬

Whichever way you slice it, it's not only a terrie defeat but a surprising one too

I really thought the tories would scrape in as in Bexley (although I concede that James Brokenshire was well regarded locally)
