Brexit Megathread - Part 1 because it's not over by a long shot

Started a new thread for all things Brexity as the last generic dumping ground reached its 1000 post limit. As this developing shitshow unfolds it's going to be important to share and unload. Clav of course will punt a contrarian view along with unrepentant 'taking back control' so-called Brexiteers. I look forward to seeing the benefits.

There was also talk about an early election with the recent reshuffle. It will be interesting to watch the timing on this one (presumably between crisis).

I was thinking only this morning that I should check out the odds on this.

dontcallmelen · 27/09/2021 13:21

@pointythings

The bottom line is that other countries may have occasional supply chain issues due to internal disruptions, like the strikes in France. What they do not have are structural, self-inflicted supply chain issues due to complete government ineptitude and voter delusion.
This Yy LQ was warning of this a long time ago.

Anyone hear R4 just before 8 this morning ?

They spoke to a Dutch? haulage expert who explained (patiently) that there was no appetite in the EU to help the UK out of - and I quote what was said on air: The shit the UK has put itself in"

Left poor old Mishal Husain floundering for a moment.

DoubleTweenQueen · 27/09/2021 13:33

@DGRossetti Need to get a clip of that and share all over SM!

DGRossetti · 27/09/2021 13:34

I'm afraid I still have fuck all time for Brexiteers who try and blame the government for "messing up Brexit" as if there was any version of Brexit that wouldn't be a shitshow.

And besides, one of the recurring themes of "project fear" was that Brexit would be so complex, so byzantine, the chances of any government fucking it up were pretty much 100%.

I bet the BBC excise it from the download.

I heard that, it made me laugh. She made a remark about the language too! What with Angela Rayner and this bloke, Today is becoming a much livelier listen.

A large majority (68%) of voters blame Brexit alongside the pandemic either completely or partly for the HGV driver shortage. 67% blame the PM. They include a significant chunk of Leave voters. Pretty grim reading for DowningStreet.

Why on Earth are nearly half of those asked blaming the EU?

prettybird · 27/09/2021 15:19

...or the last Labour Government, which was last in power 11 years ago Confused

DuncinToffee · 27/09/2021 15:20

Andreas Michaelis on twitter

Does not happen too often that a senior German politician - and in this case the candidate of the strongest party in the German election, Olaf Scholz - accepts a question being asked in English and answers it in English. See and hear for yourself.

DuncinToffee · 27/09/2021 15:23

Summary of the video in the tweet

The likely next German Chancellor responds to a Q about UK’s driver shortages: “We worked v hard to convince Britain not to leave the union. They decided different. I hope they will manage the problems coming from that.”

Adds there’s also a problem with drivers’ conditions.

vera99 · 27/09/2021 15:33

Well spoken Herr Scholz and not a single mention of muppets...

Because every single thing that's ever wrong with anything is the fault of the EU.

... even when we are no longer a member. T'will be thus until the end of time. Sad

Now back from my journey up and down the M6 and A55. Very few EU lorries on the road, and I think I saw 1 Irish.

The A55 for those who don't know, serves Holyhead. Now admittedly the lorry traffic especially eastbound depends very much on the time the ferry gets in and at such times used to heave with Irish lorries driving off. But my family who live in the area had already noticed the drop off in Irish traffic.

borntobequiet · 27/09/2021 16:12

They opened new routes from Ireland to France earlier this year, didn’t they?

prettybird · 27/09/2021 16:19

So much for the UK thinking that it might use the land bridge between Ireland and the EU/continental Europe as leverage Wink

Jason118 · 27/09/2021 16:30

There could have been a form of Brexit that wasn't so shit - single market and customs union were on offer from the EU. Would not have played well with Brexit hardliners (aka, idiots), but a sensible, country loving government would have seen the benefits. Shame we have a cacophony of clowns instead.

borntobequiet · 27/09/2021 16:32

It reminds me of a quote from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Ricki Tarr:
Everything the Circus thinks is gold is sh*t.

In this case, the Circus being Leave.
