So Grant Shapps' solution to the shortage of lorry drivers is to allow them to drive longer hours.

Leading to more accidents and deaths on the UK's roads. But Brexit is Job Done and all is well - isn't it?

My news links are limited to Farming Today and the Daily Mash, sorry.

Well fancy that. The Government has started to negotiate some limited visa free access for touring musicians. What was that about the oven ready deal?

Is this the first example of cherry picking though? A small piece of freedom of movement cake, without having any reciprocal obligations?

I’ve deleted my tweet celebrating musicians being allowed to tour in the EU.
Nothing has changed. It’s just government trying to make it look like it has.

Variety is wrong. The UK government did not negotiate better terms for UK musicians. Nothing has changed. 3rd country regs were in place before, but are now presented as progress. Problems (carnets, VAT on merch, not visas/permits) are the same. variety.com/2021/music/global/uk-brexit-europe-music-touring-1235034519/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

But very typical of the Brexiter arguments:steal £10,000 from a person and six months later crow that you have generously given them £100.

In a Telegraph headline I saw they were crowing about deepening trade links with South East Asia. Why is this good when trade with your nearest neighbours is an absolute no-no?

FrankieStein402 · 05/08/2021 10:24

world-leading technology, will serve as the UK’s single customs platform from 31 March 2023

"world leading" suggests its been written rather than based on an existing package - if so there's not a cat in hells chance of it being fit for purpose in 6 months - given that the definition of 'purpose' is still in flux - cf NIP. That sort of changing definition is the bane of all attempts to deliver HMG systems. The core principle is that you build your processes to fit the system, not try and build a system to fit changing processes.

The technology could easily be world leading.

The software could be a load of shite though.

I know it's wrong to quote your own posts but it seems the government were exercising their boundless talent for gaslighting rather than actually doing any negotiating, who'd have thought it!

Well remember that Thatcher closed the mines to save the planet.

And that's a fact.

Peregrina · 06/08/2021 07:50

Thatcher closing the pits to save the planet? Gaslighting at its best! Now if she had invested in green technology to employ those thrown out of work then yes, there would be an argument. BTW what about the new coal mine proposed for Cumbria?

DGRossetti · 06/08/2021 08:05

I'm beginning to pick up a faintest whiff now of sour grapes, post Brexit. Fruit 'n' veg pickers? - well we never really needed them.

Musicians? - well we never really wanted them.

Shelves empty? - nevermind that, look how sturdy they are. Especially when unencumbered by stock.

Etc etc.

Meanwhile - as someone noted upthread - because the Withdrawal Agreement is UK law, it can be challenged in UK courts. I say this having had a session amending a load of policies for my company to update the references where the WA amends GDPR etc. (With a side note that I seem to be in a minority on this)

BJ visiting Scotland yesterday and helping the cause of independence again Wink

Showing his usual excellent ability to read the crowd in Scotland and, as DGR says, gaslighting Angry

Ffs between over educated lorry drivers & Thatcher saving the planet surely they have finally jumped the shark, I can’t take much more of this madness.

We haven't even begun to hear the "nasty EU tricked us into leaving" story yet. I'm guessing it's not far behind the "It's all Labours fault for being part of the policy making machine" over Brexit ...

Yes, you read that right. The man who was Minister for Brexit seems to think it's the oppositions fault

9 phases of Brexit:

  1. Its freedom & economic boom
  2. Not as bad as remoaners said
  3. Teething issues
  4. Freedom requires extra effort
  5. We need better Brexit deal
  6. New pragmatism with EU
  7. Align where it makes sense
  8. The EU has learnt & changed
  9. Rejoin

We’re now at 5.

Interestingly, point 5 is where Labour seems to have landed.

According to the Financial Times' interview with Keir Starmer:

<a class="break-all" href="https://www.ft.com/content/34ec43b9-5dcd-46cd-b284-093e8f13714d" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.ft.com/content/34ec43b9-5dcd-46cd-b284-093e8f13714d</a>

Brexit, for long a taboo subject, will also be back on the agenda, as Labour promises to rebuild EU relations and “improve the trade deal” Johnson struck with Brussels. “Yes, I think there’s space to talk about Brexit and the Brexit deal,” he said.

Eternal optimist that I am, I am hoping this may be the beginning of a slow and awkward change of course...

Well remember that Thatcher closed the mines to save the planet.

Comprehensively refuted by Jonathan Porritt on World at One today, though he did rightly give her credit for being the only world leader at the time to recognise and understand the problem.

Surprising pictures of empty shelves in supermarkets across the country.
(I couldn’t get sparkling water, toilet cleaner or various fresh veg yesterday.)

Supermarket bosses won’t like it: less stuff to sell = less profit to be made.

In Pics: Supermarkets are coming up with ingenious ways of hiding empty shelves.
Shoppers have been left angered at the lack of food available in supermarkets across Britain, blamed on Brexit, a shortage of workers and 'pinged' workers

6 and 7 will only happen under a new leader who will happily refute the mess created by his/her predecessor. 8/9 will have to wait for the next generation although the need to co-operate on global warming may hasten things along.

Having said that, what do I know? We are facing unprecedented demographics (aging population and low fertility) against a backdrop of environmental upheaval. Past events are no guide to future predictions.
