So Grant Shapps' solution to the shortage of lorry drivers is to allow them to drive longer hours.

Leading to more accidents and deaths on the UK's roads. But Brexit is Job Done and all is well - isn't it?

@HannibalHayeski

UK asks for Brexshit standstill which would see Northern Ireland checks put on hold indefinitely.

So, er, "job done" apparently...

Yeah, we had that. It was called the Transition phase. The UK signed the agreement that ended it - job done.

It's almost like they don't get it, isn't it ?

Another Brexit bonus

Note who the responsibility lies with:
The UK Government said the "British people repeatedly voted to end free movement and take back control of our immigration system" and the government said that is what they had delivered.

It's very easy to argue that the Government hasn't delivered an effective immigration system, because immigration and/or training schemes would be matched to job vacancies, so reports like the above would not happen.

I think governments that try to blame the people that voted for them by distancing themselves from their own policies tend to be on the way out.

Can you imagine that for any other policy ? "We're made a repeated pigs ear of the War on Drugs (c), but since it's what you keep voting for ...^

A very lucid analysis of the HGV driver shortage - Brexit being amongst the reasons, as well as the UK attitude towards drivers Sad - that LQ sent me Angry

Also (again, LQ pointed me in the direction of this): the Government backs down on the V1-1 wine forms - yet presents it as a part of its bonfire of regulations Hmm conveniently ignoring that the forms wouldn't have been needed if the UK hadn't left the EU Confused

....rather than a result of furious lobbying Hmm

FFS! De Spaffle isn't interested in ironing out the NI issues, he wants to redo the whole thing and is acting like an utter fuckwit.

I had some medical issues that made me stop drinking alcohol since the beginning of this year (not mandated but I thought it a good idea) but decided it was OK to celebrate my birthday with a glass or two. I was surprised to see no changes in the price of wine since I bought it last.
It’s always amazed me that you can spend more daily on, say, two takeaway coffees and a muffin or whatever, than you might on a cheapish but acceptable bottle of wine from Aldi (my wine merchant of choice). (I rarely buy takeaway coffee, as you might infer.)

borntobequiet · 27/07/2021 09:45

Ha ha, as per the pic of the Private Eye letter in prettybird’s post earlier

Peregrina · 27/07/2021 10:10

it's a bit rich trying to blame the government prior to the 2019 election. Johnson could have asked for more time, which he wasn't going to do, remember.

Still the excuses will be lapped up by Express and Telegraph readers.

This is not news. I recall posting it last year (as did others).

Also given Boris has already thrown the finance sector under a bus, why should legal services be any different ?

DGRossetti · 28/07/2021 19:33

Slightly OT, but a smack in the chops for Gove

Ah ok, but still not anywhere near 'job done'

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 29/07/2021 17:20

Tonight on R4 at 8pm, The Briefing Room is looking into worker shortages, focusing on lorry drivers.

DrBlackbird · 29/07/2021 23:19

Went to the grocery store this evening. Many shelves were empty and little by way of actual fresh veg. Very sad looking broccoli. Though prices the same.

It’s odd that just a lack of lorry drivers would stop British strawberries reaching the shelves Hmm There I suspect it’s lack of fruit pickers.

And I’d stopped restoring my brexit stocks 🙄 So the likes of LQ and others who said ‘give it time, the shortages will come’ seem justified in that prediction now.

Catma2021 · 30/07/2021 12:13

Went to B&M yesterday and there were gaps on many aisles, including my favourite, the chocolate aisle! Shock

Some of the shops are seemingly being quite resourceful in trying to hide the gaps. Yesterday, Iceland were short of sweet potato chips and had hidden the ones that were left under another product. I wonder if this is to prevent panic buying.

FlippantFair · 30/07/2021 13:04

My Leave voting mother commented that the owners of a place she lunched at were doing most of the serving, and wait times were long. She said she assumed it was due to the pinging/isolation, until her friend reminded her that most of the staff there when they used to go were from other European countries. To be fair to her, she is showing a little bit of regret about her vote. My extremely racist/brexiteer brother has had her ear throughout, and everything I said was considered scare mongering. Even brother has quietened down a little.
Big Tesco here, and you could certainly do a big shop, but there were a few things on my list that I couldn't get today. Dark chocolate for one, and most frozen veg.

DrBlackbird · 30/07/2021 13:08

The frozen section in Waitrose was nearly all empty. Including my favourite ’go to’ frozen meals. I’m guessing that’s everyone now jumping on the stocking bandwagon. Somehow it’ll be the nasty EU’s fault. But I’m so cross at myself for letting my stocks run down 😥

DrBlackbird · 30/07/2021 13:15

My extremely racist/brexiteer brother has had her ear throughout, and everything I said was considered scare mongering

A family member asked me about a Brexiteer leaflet that had been put through their door during the referendum and even though I said it was out and out lying, they still voted to Leave. The power of a piece of paper.

Yes, they won, but only by lying and because vested interests supplied the capital to create vast swathes of resources to convince the unknowing.

No, I probably won’t ever get over it. 🤷🏻‍♀️
