Westministenders: This is not the Brexit we voted for

ListeningQuietly · 08/04/2021 12:06

UK Shellfish industry destroyed because our inshore waters are not clean enough
Welsh Ports on their knees because the Land Bridge has found another route
Horticulture seed producers lost all of their mainland EU customers

Antique dealers lost access to their suppliers
Small businesses being told (by UK Govt) to relocate to the EU to avoid red tape
Brits in the EU discovering that stopping Free Movement applies to them too
Northern Ireland in Unionist flames because there is a border between them and Great Britain, but not the Republic
And the UK has still not taken control of its borders

Brexit is shaping up as predicted, but none of those who voted for it seem to have what they wanted

Gosh I do find the Independent impossible to read on my phone. Jumps about, ads and videos everywhere. Why do they do that?! They used to be a decent paper but they are just useless now.

HannibalHayes · 14/04/2021 11:36

I saw someone on twitter last night saying that David Cameron's involvement in Greensill is going to be investigated by a Cavid Dameron.

jasjas1973 · 14/04/2021 11:44

The Prime Minister said he did not think arrangements he agreed with the EU would involve restrictions on the movements of food products such as sausages, on parcel deliveries and on soil from Great Britain entering Northern Ireland

That just goes to show he didn't do any basic research into the EU or the SM.
If a bunch of relatively uninformed MNs can see the problems, why couldn't he and Frost not see them?

TheABC · 14/04/2021 11:47

@jasjas1973, he did not want to see them.

In fairness to Clav (and Johnson), after the way things went tits-up with the Scotland visit, I can see why he would stay away from Northern Ireland.

The car crash has happened. We are into the bloody aftermath now, where you count your fingers and toes and see what is still working.

I wont have anyone denigrating Cavid Dameron on this thread, his impartiality is unquestioned
TheSandman · 14/04/2021 13:05
I know it's puerile but made me laugh.

Agreed. And that Soviet Style poster to the left of it is pretty stunning too.

Peregrina · 14/04/2021 13:15

This will be lost on the man in question, because he is extremely unlikely to speak Welsh, being a Home Counties Tory.

But it's an opportunity to remind people that when old deadwood Redwood was the Welsh Secretary he was caught miming the Welsh National Anthem.

borntobequiet · 14/04/2021 13:28

These threads are so valuable, now I know the Welsh for arsehole.

TheSandman · 14/04/2021 13:36

Miming is a bit of an exaggeration. 'Miming' would imply he knew the words.

HannibalHayes · 14/04/2021 13:39

Another bit of light relief...

Clavinova please read the threads. It should not have escaped your notice that many of us think that Starmer made a big mistake on supporting Johnson's deal. The nodding dogs would have seen that it went through.

I did read the thread! Why would I let you forget that Starmer supported Johnson's deal? Don't be daft.

I can see no evidence at all that Boris Johnson left London in Mid March.
He certainly did not go to Northern Ireland as far as I can see.

You didn't look very far:

Reuters - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has his temperature taken as he arrives at Axial 3D offices in Belfast, Northern Ireland, March, 12, 2021.

The Times 13 March 2021 -

The British prime minister said that he was in “listening mode” as he held frank discussions with the DUP during a visit to Belfast and Co Fermanagh yesterday.

yes, but a chippy in Grimsby has taken on an additional cashier, so Brexit is doing wonders for the economy!

I don't know about chippies in Grimsby but "the UK's first "gigafactory" has moved a step closer."

12 April 2021 -
Britishvolt said it had bought the 235-acre (95 hectare) Blyth Power Station site and would have "spades in the soil" by the summer.

The plant will produce lithium-ion batteries for electric cars, with production scheduled to start in 2023.

About 3,000 jobs are expected to be created.

"One in four small U.K. exporters have halted sales to the European Union because of red tape caused by Brexit"

The Bloomberg article in your link appears to be very misleading with regard to sample size in the survey. Bloomberg say; according to the survey of almost 1,500 firms - however the FSB have a note on their website which suggests that the majority of small businesses in the survey were not exporters (or importers);

Notes to editors
1) FSB surveyed 1,483 businesses between 1 and 15 March 2021 of which 207 were importers and/or exporters.

www.fsb.org.uk/resources-page/one-in-four-small-exporters-halt-eu-sales-three-months-on-from-transition-end-new-study-finds.html

And Reuters ran an article on the same day as Bloomberg which states;

In the survey by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), 30 out of 132 exporters said they had stopped sales to the European Union temporarily, while five reported having done so permanently.

"Don't worry if this effects you"

affects surely ?

It's richly ironic that if an English proficiency qualification was needed to be - or remain - a citizen. we'd lose a lot of the Tories overnight.

A video of Johnson lying to Parliament reaches 10 million views.

Does the video also point out that Keir Starmer quoted an out of date projection in the same exchange (on poverty) in Parliament?

Full Fact -
Mr Starmer also claimed that child poverty was projected to rise to 5.2 million by 2022. This is also from the SMoC report, which seems to quote estimates based on projections made by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) in 2017. The IFS projected that child poverty would rise from 30% in 2015/16 to 37% in 2021/22. But if the projections had played out for real, then we’d expect child poverty to be at around 35% by now. Given that relative child poverty is still 30% (unchanged since 2015/16), we don’t think these projections are still valid.

Randox has been the Grand National sponsor since 2017. But plenty of questions about Owen Paterson’s advisor position with Randox (£100k per year) and Randox winning Government contracts with no other firms being asked to bid.

Randox are based in Northern Ireland. To be fair - the company does seem like the obvious choice.

Irish Times - December 2020

Inside Randox, the Northern Irish firm at the heart of UK’s Covid testing effort.

The Co Antrim company maintains that recent negative reports are ‘simply not true.’

By anyone’s standards, the way the company has responded to the pandemic is impressive, despite some controversy both over how it secured contracts with the UK government and alleged testing issues.

Just two weeks after Chinese authorities shared the genetic map, or genome, of the virus, Randox had developed its own test for Covid-19. By the end of March it was completing 150 tests a day: this has since risen to more than 80,000 a day and the company plans to expand this further, to 100,000, with its site in Dungloe, Co Donegal, currently being upgraded to boost testing capacity...

The company identified the fourth positive Covid case in the UK.

www.irishtimes.com/business/health-pharma/inside-randox-the-northern-irish-firm-at-the-heart-of-uk-s-covid-testing-effort-1.4426601

It is estimated that each year 5 per cent of the world’s population – more than 370 million people in 145 countries – receive a health diagnosis via a product manufactured by Randox.
