Westministenders: This is not the Brexit we voted for

ListeningQuietly · 08/04/2021 12:06

UK Shellfish industry destroyed because our inshore waters are not clean enough
Welsh Ports on their knees because the Land Bridge has found another route
Horticulture seed producers lost all of their mainland EU customers

Antique dealers lost access to their suppliers
Small businesses being told (by UK Govt) to relocate to the EU to avoid red tape
Brits in the EU discovering that stopping Free Movement applies to them too
Northern Ireland in Unionist flames because there is a border between them and Great Britain, but not the Republic
And the UK has still not taken control of its borders

Brexit is shaping up as predicted, but none of those who voted for it seem to have what they wanted

Hi Peregrina

Sorry for your loss, and for anyone else dealing with ongoing grief from this pandemic. Flowers

"Not to worry" we thought "we'll catch The Now Show podcast going to shopping Saturday morning". - Oh, no you won't matey boy, said Auntie Beeb. 'Coz we also pulled Radio 4 (walks off cackling).*

Friday evening’s postponed episode still aired on Saturday lunchtime?

By which time we'd driven to shopping and back. We only really listen to podcasts in the car because that works for us.

HIGNFY is being shown (extended version) Monday evening. Only we retire early, so won't see it till Tuesday. By which time it will be pretty "off" - even if Phil the Greek hadn't joined the choir invisible.

All this caterwauling about someone whose contribution to the overall quality of life in the UK is marginal at best. I am sure we can find doctors, firemen, lifeguards who have saved more of the public that the Grand old Duke of Edinburgh.

Americans I've just started dealing with think we are fucking loopy.

LostToucan · 11/04/2021 11:08

Nah. Can’t get worked up about a podcast being unavailable for a few hours.

As the saying goes "Your Mileage May Vary".

Anyway, it's interesting to note how "The Royals" - admitted aided by a government that would struggle with velcro - appear to have misjudged the mood and nature of the nation.

Once again.

If I were a conspiraloon, I'd advance the idea that Boris is a secret republican (after all "President Johnson" does have a ring to it) and he's feeding deliberately damaging ideas to the Royals to hasten their demise.

But I'm not ....

A message to Peregrina (and various others). Please do not get distracted by those seeking to silence your voice. I greatly enjoy listening to your thoughts and suspect that if you (and others) stopped posting, there would be much rejoicing in certain quarters. Please keep it up, as I am confident there are many who find this thread hugely informative and find things from here that are simply too hard to find in the usual media.

Lonelycrab · 11/04/2021 12:30

Cornwalllass +1 from an appreciative lurker

HappyWinter · 11/04/2021 12:44

Also with Cornwalllass, this thread is very informative.

wewereliars · 11/04/2021 12:55

What Cornwalllass said. They want you quiet, because some people dont like uncomfortable truths. But we are sorely in need of uncomfortable truths, now more than ever. Keep on keeping on Peregrina and all the other intelligent and informed posters on this thread.

GeistohneGrenzen · 11/04/2021 13:05

I'll join the list too please. I come from 'the silent generation' which can have its drawbacks but it does mean I appreciate the input from others all the more Smile

LouiseCollins28 · 11/04/2021 13:42

Nicely put CornwallLass. Discussing stuff openly and avoiding "filter bubbles" is so important.

ListeningQuietly · 11/04/2021 13:44

Sadly the BBC will say nothing to upset its funders in government

Same here, I don’t contribute much but these threads are a lifeline.

I also appreciate these threads and the intelligent contributions of posters. Thank you.

ListeningQuietly · 11/04/2021 13:58

So long as the BBC news website has this section
www.bbc.co.uk/news/politics/uk_leaves_the_eu
these threads are needed.

If you look at this thread
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4215120-everything-is-out-of-stock
you will realise that many, many people have little or no understanding of the time lags in trade and the nature of the global supply chain
let alone the increasing impacts of the UK choosing to leave the trading bloc that can be seen from its borders

I do not fully understand why all of the UK press are being so weak on holding the Government to account on it
but they are
so we have to do their job for them
(pooling information from as many sources as possible, sharing and discussing it)

Americans I've just started dealing with think we are fucking loopy.

To be fair i've worked with many Americans on projects both inside and outside the US - all pretty bright except for the general attitude against taking annual leave and the strange blind spot associated with those who were republicans.

Basically everyone has something about which some others would consider them loopy.

Peregrina · 11/04/2021 14:33

Thank you for your kind words people.

I think Helen Lewis did explain well, but if the Tory backbenchers would like to complain, they are welcome to pay my licence fee for me. Some of the coverage became as she put it 'syrupy'; but mawkish might well have been a better word, and as such doesn't honour the Royal Family. E.g. Prince Andrew declares that PP's death has left a huge void in the Queen's life. Well of course it has, it would for anyone married for such a long time - but is it news?

What has happened in N Ireland? You have to scroll down to find the news item which tells us that last night was quiet. You also have to go elsewhere to find that Johnson refuses calls for a summit on the N Ireland problems.

That very neatly illustrates Johnson's priorities.

Lonelycrab · 11/04/2021 14:37

Although I despair at how the BBC have fallen from being once widely respected, to their current tabloid outfit, I do feel they’re in between a rock and a hard place. To me and many of us they’re just a dumbed down government mouthpiece, yet to my swivel eyed 80yo df they’re a bunch of wishy washy liberal woke merchants. Perhaps that says more about just how divided and entrenched everything is these days. I dunno, but one thing is for sure, the government have them in their pocket and they know exactly how important it is for the media to be towing their line.

Is Dacre about to become Ofcom chief still? God help us all if that’s the case.

QueenOfThorns · 11/04/2021 15:16

Anyway, it's interesting to note how "The Royals" - admitted aided by a government that would struggle with velcro - appear to have misjudged the mood and nature of the nation.

I’m not sure what the Royals have actually done wrong this time DGR. One of them died. There was an announcement saying so. Then some brief interviews were given, not saying much. Hard to fault any of this. Unless you think they’re in charge of programming on the Beeb?

And I would like to reiterate what previous posters have said. For goodness sake, try not to get yourselves banned, Peregrina and TatianaBis, we need you here!

Clavinova · 11/04/2021 15:21

Sorry to upend the super sleuthing on here but it wasn't me who reported the posts.

TatianaBis - I guess someone winky wink keeps hitting report.

If you are referring to me - I didn't actually read either of your posts (or Peregrina's second post for that matter). I don't know whether you deserved deletion or not. I suppose Peregrina invited scrutiny of her own words by criticising the words used by others - but again I didn't see her second post.

mrslaughan - Shall we just start hitting report on all c&p's posts?

Risky on your part - MNHQ can see perfectly well that it wasn't me who contacted them yesterday.

Just wanted to set the record straight. Busy with other things today. As you were.

Peregrina · 11/04/2021 15:31

I have no idea who it was, MN themselves I thought.

As I said, I think they might have been my first deletions, so I took it as a compliment!

prettybird · 11/04/2021 15:40

What bugged many people was that on Friday, BBC1, BBC2, BBC Alba, BBC Scotland, BBC News and BBC Parliament were all showing the SAME programme, on repeat, while BBC 4 was pulled. One, maybe two stations, perhaps. BBC 1 and BBC News. But not all of them. Not six Shock Yes, we had iPlayer and other streaming services as an alternative (which dh and I could and did avail ourselves of the day before's Beechgrove and 3 episodes of West Wing Wink) but does that not in itself make a mockery of giving over ALL “broadcasting” from the “National Broadcaster” to enforced recollection and commemoration? Confused

It has the opposite effect and is more likely to encourage republican sentiments. Shock

I do hope that they review the London Bridge protocol in light of increased accessibility of information and platforms - and a different, less deferential attitude to being "subjects of the monarch". The country is not "united in mourning". Hmm

Unless, as a previous poster has suggested, BJ is a secret republican who fancies being president - and therefore is happy to leave in place protocols that will piss off the population and hasten the demise of this particular constitutional monarchy. Hmm

mrslaughan · 11/04/2021 15:51

The problem with the line about us being a Constitutional Monarchy - is when does the Monarchy step in to defend Democracy? I am happy for the Royal Family to continue...but the constitution needs to be discussed and updated. As has been proven in the last few years - the Queen has no role in protect Democracy or her "subjects.
