Westministenders: Unilateral Ignoring of WHO rules

Where we are:

On 1st January the EU started to apply checks on all goods from the UK coming into the Union.

However the UK decided to take a slower route to this, and planned that on the 1st April the UK we would be carrying out Sanitary & Phytosanitary paperwork for animal and plant EU imports like meat and eggs.

Then on 1 July we'd implement a full customs check on all goods arriving into the UK from EU member states.

Obviously we've struggled with exports as we weren't ready for this and its fucked business. But ultimately the import side of things has yet to hit the shit fan still.

It sounds like there is likely to be issues with imports of food in particular, so there is talk of delaying our plan of checks until later in the day. There is concern that the reopening of pubs and restuarants which will up demands of imports occuring at the same time as checks are put in place is likely to be 'problematic'.

Remember we get 2/3 of fruit, veg and cheese from the EU. And half our wine. And to date these largely have only been affected by haulage issues NOT UK customs issues...

You might want to keep that in mind.

DGR Yeah, Shy have given Rishi loads of space too news.sky.com/story/reopen-offices-after-lockdown-ends-or-your-staff-may-quit-rishi-sunak-warns-british-businesses-12256912

But he is talking bollocks

Employees do not want to go back to 5 day a week commuting

Companies do not want to have to fund 5 day a week office spaces

The environment is better without it

Cities and landlords will just have to adapt

I don't think it works like that. There are too many vested interests in ensuring the UK has a captive commuter class that is needed to maintain the property money printing machine. Hence the fact I am predicting the government using legislation to enforce it.

Employees do not want to go back to 5 day a week commuting

Well we can ignore them. Who give a shit what they think.

Companies do not want to have to fund 5 day a week office spaces

Companies just want to make money. If the landscape means you can only do that with commuting, then that's what they will do.

The environment is better without it

Same as employees, no one in power gives a shit about this either.

Cities and landlords will just have to adapt

Only if they are allowed to.

In fact Brexit probably came at just the right time to fight back against this. Just tell people how "British" it is to commute. Almost like an "I'm backing Britain" campaign des nos jours. I'm commuting for Britain would be the slogan. With a design that incorporates a union flag naturally.

DGRossetti · 26/03/2021 13:09

If significant numbers did move out of cities, one might speculate what electoral effect it would have.

I don't think that's yet percolated up to the Sunak. He's just being leaned on by a lot of commercial property owners that have twigged their cash cow is melting even faster than the polar ice caps. And not only that, but it's the riff-raff that are actually benefiting. Two things they did not pay for to happen under a Tory government.

Flagging

I had to laugh at the Dutch government website;

New general flagging instructions...

The flagging instructions draw a distinction between 'extensive flagging' and 'limited flagging'... Grin

www.government.nl/latest/news/2013/05/21/new-general-flagging-instructions

Republic of Ireland - SEP 2015

THE FIRST OF a series of events that will see every primary school in Ireland being given a tricolour and a copy of the proclamation is to take place today.

The ‘Flags for Schools’ initiative will see the Defence Forces tasked with delivering the flag to 3,200 schools.

The Defence Forces explained:
Each school will be visited by a team, led by an Officer or senior NCO, who will formally present the National Flag to the School in a special ceremony. Our personnel will teach the schoolchildren about how the National Flag should be cared for and the protocol that surrounds this vibrant symbol of our nation.

April 2017
THE NATIONAL FLAG will now be illuminated and fly 24/7 outside Government Buildings.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny said last year’s 1916 commemorations brought about a newfound respect for the tricolour.

In accordance with the guidelines governing the use of the national flag it is normally displayed in the open only from sunrise to sunset, except on the occasion of public meetings, processions or funerals, when it may be displayed for the duration of such function.

However, the [new] guidelines provide that the tricolour may be flown by night as well as by day as long as it is properly illuminated at all times.

Richmond does of course have a long way to go before it's represented by anything other than Tory, last returning a Liberal in 1906. So no one who has lived their all their life now will have known anything else - unless there are a handful of people more than 111 years old living there.

Peregrina · 26/03/2021 13:15

I think you miss the point about the Irish Tricolor - it represents freedom from the United Kingdom as the date you mention should make abundantly clear. Our Union Jack is predominantly flown now to commemorate royal occasions. With the rules about to come into force, they lose their specialness - which sounds like an unintended gift to Republicans.

A newfound respect.

So you are telling us why EU countries like to fly the flag. Should we be copying them? I thought going our own way was the be all and end all of Brexit.

Still the Americans are rather flag obsessed, so perhaps we can ignore the EU and make it clear we are copying them instead.

Fun Fact (In Elements absence):

The Leidenfrost effect is demonstrated by dripping water onto a very hot pan. The droplets will skitter around the pan as the base of the droplet vaporises on contact with the hot surface. These droplets are self-propelled even on a flat surface.

DGRossetti · 26/03/2021 13:41

Still the Americans are rather flag obsessed

Much easier than stopping high school massacres and racialised poverty, doncha think ?

DGRossetti · 26/03/2021 13:45

... so I had all these England flags in the cellar, and my cat had terrible diarrhea so I needed some cloth quickly so quickly got an England flag for the cat to do it's diarrhea on. But I didn't realise how powerful a symbol it is, and how disrespectful it seemed, so as the cat shat on the flag, I sang the national anthem ...

(from memory Grin )

Peregrina

I quite like flags - you are the one who posted;

Their [No 10] press briefings already look a bit stupid with 4 flags on display, where one would be perfectly adequate.

Canada - or don't you like Canada either?

Anyone seen the story of an (presumably) escaped rheas doing the rounds in Bucks.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-56535979

Up to 20 rhea birds that have been running around a housing estate will be sent to an animal reserve when captured, police said.

Begs the question where they came from (I see Germany is now host to an established 500 birds ....)

I'd happily try the meat. Wouldn't like to get near them though. Don't fancy being disembowelled.

Where ?

Peregrina · 26/03/2021 14:20

I quite like Canada and yes, Justin Trudeau looks just as stupid with a line of flags behind him, IMO. One is perfectly fine.

Peregrina · 26/03/2021 14:22

I really don't like Express links, but I had to make an exception for that one. It has also been posted on pro- EU facebook pages, so they might not get the results they want.

They can't lose - it's not data, it's "feelz".

"Do you trust the EU to 'play fair'" is a meaningless question in any context. Especially as it lacks the matching "Do you expect the UK to play fair" needed to try and make any sense out of it.

Which suggests the whole project isn't about making sense, but just a clickybait headline.

I have to admit that no preconceptions have been harmed in the conduct of this experiment.

DGRossetti · 26/03/2021 14:31

How are they going to check it's a valid email address then ? Assuming they are sending a confirmation email.
prettybird · 26/03/2021 15:00

They weren't asking for a confirmation email (which makes the whole exercise highly dubious and easily manipulated Hmm) - they were asking for an email address if you wanted to get a copy of the results.

I perceived that as an email harvesting exercise Hmm

Peregrina · 26/03/2021 15:08

I didn't give an email either, but if it's necessary, you can always make one up.
